Chapter 299: Chapter 299: To The River

Some moments later.

"Just up ahead, the river!" Sherone shouted to the red-striped male beside him.

The red-striped male zebra nodded his head, understanding Sherone’s plan. The other male leaders knew what was to happen.

This wasn’t the brightest of ideas at all and came with a lot of risks, but if it meant a stronger chance of survival for the majority of them, then they would not mind taking it.

In front of the moving zebra herd, a body of water could be seen in the distance, sitting there and reflecting the setting sun.

"Faster!" Sherone shouted and charged forward with superior speed, it looked like he would be the one to cross the river first once they arrived.

Behind the zebra herd, more weak zebras who could not keep up with their running herd were slowly being left behind. Their bits of stamina could not take them far so they began to run slower and slower than they initially started.

And fast approaching behind these abandoned zebras was the beastly horde, getting closer and closer.

For the beastly horde, the zebra herd was in sight and they broke out into a full sprint. Their main focus was on the abandoned zebras left behind by the herd.

Each zebra that was caught by the meat eaters of this horde experienced painful sensations before dying. Their bodies were ripped to shreds and destroyed within seconds.

The foals, the elderly, the unfortunate mothers who had stayed behind, they were all torn to pieces the moment those predators got their claws on them.

A powerful telepathic wave spread forth, washing over all the creatures. Priya’s hive mind technique constantly activated and deactivated itself.

At the center of the horde, Priya stared ahead with a calm gaze, sending out pulses of information through the telepathic channel.

"Did you already know how to do this?" Kael asked nonchalantly as they continued walking.

"What?" Priya asked, blinking and splitting her mind to listen to what Kael was saying.

"This hive mind thing, you’re trying to establish a unified spirit channel to link all of them together," Kael said.

He had seen something similar from the Spirit Octopus he had fought with at the Iron Blood Pyramid, she had used a similar method to maintain communication and control over many octopuses at the same time.

"Yes, I’m just starting to get the hang of it," Priya affirmed.

More than a hundred zebras were killed and devoured by the horde, leaving nothing but bloody bones behind as they continued their chase.

By now, they were no longer just jogging, hoping to scare the zebras, this was a full-on pursuit.

Kael’s interest in the zebras was still there but it had diminished the moment he heard about the river. He was more interested in what he would find in that river.

Why were zebras running there? What was on the other side? What made them so confident to think that that river could stop them from advancing?

Flames and purple electricity burst from the edges of the moving horde as two lionesses rushed out.

They were Ruda and Eidel, two sisters and the king’s consorts. Eidel and Ruda ignored the abandoned zebras completely, they kept their eyes trained on the distant zebra herd that was gradually getting close.

Behind them, wolves howled, foxes barked, bears roared, and goats screamed. All the birds cried with glee, the hunt had officially begun.

When compared to other creatures, Eidel and Ruda’s aura were just overwhelming. Not only were they inching closer and closer to the tier 4 stage, but they also had Conquering Essence, bringing them infinitely close to the power level of a tier four lion.

They both kept their speed at a certain level, if not, Eidel alone could run ahead and would be able to get to the zebra herd faster.

It was the same for the zebra herd, some zebras with Electric Zebraheart could run faster but they wouldn’t.

Conservation of energy and teamwork wouldn’t allow them.

Alas, Kael’s beastly horde was not immune to tiredness. Some creatures were starting to slow down, unable to keep up, most of them were ordinary creatures.

Not just Ruda and Eidel, other super-powered creatures who had originally been in the middle of the horde formation were moving toward the front, not because they were getting faster, but because most of the creatures were ordinary and they were getting slower.

On the left and right sides of the moving horde, as well as the rear end, snakes slithered at a comfortable pace. They were not in a hurry as their fighting style depended a lot on ambush and stealth. There was no use charging forward like the rest of them.

Space continued to twist around Kael as he walked at a leisurely pace with Priya. His eyes narrowed as he sank into his thoughts, seeing the weakening creatures of his kingdom passing him by. Most of them had slowed to a crawl or jog and had their mouths open as they gasped for air.

He had expected many things to happen but he had not foreseen this. An error on their part and it couldn’t be helped.

He would have preferred if the weaker creatures fought from the front lines while the stronger ones fought close to him. Strength was more valuable after all, a lot of resources had been spent to get each of them to his level.

If he had Origin Essence to spare, he would have just brought the Iron Blood Shuttle, which would have made his work easier. But the current scarcity of Origin Essence caused him to be cautious, he would only use it when it’s absolutely necessary.

Besides, Chloe had one magic shuttle to herself right now and both of them were in the wild plains. It was too wasteful to have two magic shuttles in the wild plains at the same time when there was a blaring scarcity of Origin Essence.

After giving it some thought, Kael decided not to do anything. This zebra herd wasn’t even the main target. Meanwhile, he started churning his water powers.

More and more creatures if the kingdom continued to be left behind but the stronger participants continued their chase they could go on for much longer.

The zebra herd was getting closer and closer, more and more zebras were being left behind, leaving them at the mercy of the horde.

Then, the zebra herd finally reached the river.

*BAM! SHHHHK!*

Sherone stomped his hoof and slid to a halt, raising a cloud of dust behind him. The river was just right in front of him.

He stood at the river bank, flanked by the mighty powerful males left and right. Their breathing was ragged and their hooves stomped the ground restlessly.

They were anxious and agitated, some of them constantly looked behind them to see the approaching horde of beasts. They could see the flashing lights of electricity and flames, they were getting close.

Sherone’s eyes scanned the river. The water flowed in one direction, it wasn’t moving with force, but rather, with grace. It was the kind of river that they could cross without worrying about being swept away by the current.

This was one of the rivers in the whole wild plains that never went dry, particularly because of the inhabitants.

There was a feeling of apprehension amongst the herd members, this wasn’t the first time they were going to cross this river, but it might be the last.

Just beyond the river, on the other side, lay greener pastures and much more succulent vegetation to feed on.

"Sherone, what are we waiting for?" One of his consorts asked.

Sherone ignored her. As the herd leader, he had to lead the charge into the river first, or at least, one of the powerful males had to lead the charge.

But looking around, Sherone saw that the other powerful males were hesitating to step into the water even though they knew the beastly horde was coming.

Suddenly, something caught Sherone’s eye. A small ripple appeared on the water as something peeked out of the surface before swiftly going back in.

A stream of hair flushed out of his nostrils and his spine tingled, he naturally knew what that was.

But if he doesn’t go, the others will waste time in making a decision.

*BAM!*

Sherone slammed his front hoof down in frustration, cracking the ground and sending tremors into the water.

His body began to swell and grow. His already big body began to get bigger. His neck became thicker and wider and his chest muscles bulged.

His limbs grew much larger, becoming thick pillars of muscle. The hooves at the end of his limbs widened and the bottom grew spikes.

Having finished his transformation, Sherone stomped his hoof again into the ground, causing some soil to explode into the air.

Releasing an angry grunt, he charged straight into the river, his body rammed through the water and causing a lot of splashes.

With Sherone taking charge, the other zebras acted immediately. They activated their powers and their auras rose. The river was disturbed as the zebras began crossing, intending to get to the other side as fast as possible.
