Chapter 49: The Moon Child’s Most Divine Creation

Chapter 49

This new feeling of strength felt strange, almost elusive, and it had only lasted for a moment as the boy quickly stepped back, allowing his shadow to retreat. With a gleaming smile on his face, he said,

"There’s a lot more I can do with my shadow than meager enhancements, a few that I can tell you about... if it pleases you. But in return, I want you to tell me about your abilities and how this healing of yours works."

Megumi sighed and gazed up at the sky, the silver circle of the full moon now at its highest point. He thought for a while about what he should and shouldn’t tell the boy standing before him. Given what he had said earlier, there really wasn’t much to tell him.

After a while, he lowered his gaze and gestured to a bench that lay to the side in the castle’s courtyard. Thereafter, he and Kuran approached the quiet resting point and sat down, basking in the stillness of the night.

Well, it wasn’t completely still; he could still hear the distant murmurs of the other children who were in the castle with them. He thought of them for a moment, trying to compare how different a conversation with either of them would have been compared to the one he was having with Kuran.

His endeavor hadn’t gone very well... if anything, the heir of Clan Kitsuboma was being rather reasonable; at least he thought so. Unlike Megumi, he had a lot more cards and thus could spare revealing a few, and that was a disparity he would rather not see set.

For every one of the children currently in the castle, these rather vague team-ups were built upon pure uncertainty, a cruel ingredient required for the demon hunt. He could tell the young heir a little more about how his abilities worked, but that would leave him short-handed should they clash in the future.

But he would have to at least say something—drop a stake to at least solidify their alliance. And after a while, a decision finally settled in his mind.

Slouching unenthusiastically on the bench, he stared at his palms.

"I haven’t really put my healing to much use since, well, it only works on others, but it’s really my only flame attribute that’s actually useful. As for my other ability... I’m sure you understand."

Kuran nodded his head, gently intertwining his fingers as he swung his legs around on the bench, his gaze intently fixed on the sky. He didn’t say anything after that, which filled Megumi with a deep sense of relief. Clearing his thoughts for a few seconds, he side-eyed Kuran, thinking deeply.

Earlier he had been rather wary of the boy, though he had thought of the boy’s actions to be a bit comical... but now, he was genuinely terrified of the inheritor of shadows. What other cards could the kid possibly be hiding? What more could he do with his shadows?

’Why did he even tell me that he could do a lot more with his shadows? Perhaps to convince, or rather... hehe, I should have seen that coming as well. It wouldn’t be a surprise that his comment was rather a threat warning me of whatever he is capable of. How terrifying.’

He heaved a sigh and stood up from the bench.

"It’s getting late; we should return to our chambers soon. It is imperative that we be well-rested by tomorrow morning."

Kuran sprang up from the bench as soon as he was done talking, a smile still plastered on his youthful face. He gazed at the arch of the castle’s cloister and yawned. Then he threw a glance at Megumi as they began moving toward it and said:

"I guess this is goodnight, then."

Megumi smiled as they began to ascend the entrance to the grand castle.

"Yeah, good night."

*********

Soon, Megumi was once again strolling through the exquisite corridor of the spirit castle, glancing at the delicate arts that lay carved into the pristine white walls and floor. Each view left him partially enthralled.

Slightly adjusting his robe, he made his way to his chambers, gently opening the door to the warmth of the room he had been assigned. It was just as he had left it earlier, simple and aesthetic.

He closed the door and slowly walked to his bed and climbed on top of it. Then, he crossed his legs and began to meditate, a familiar set of runes appearing before him, shimmering with a faint white light.

Name: Megumi Aki...]

He looked past the first runes, particularly the ones translating to his name, and glanced down until he finally set his eyes on his goal.

Abilities: Crimson Flame, Divine Light.]

He concentrated on the runes further, particularly on the one that translated to "Crimson Flame."

Crimson Flame: Dark flames incurred from the very depths of the void, perfected by the goddess of the sun. She granted it to the first of her followers, a beacon of humanity’s salvation.]

He furrowed his brow.

"Huh?"

’Isn’t the system supposed to be learning?’

All this while, he had considered the system to be something that was slowly discovering the world along with him, integrating whatever knowledge it gained to aid him better. But if that was the case, it shouldn’t have known that the crimson flames were a creation of some god that existed centuries ago.

Well, now he was starting to see that he might have been wrong. Perhaps the system already had knowledge of things that existed before he was done, or rather things that existed by the time it was created... if it had indeed been created. It had called his identity as a sorcerer a class but had failed to identify his race, and now it had described how the existence of an ancient ability came to be.

The system truly was strange. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Shaking off the presumptuous thoughts, he glanced further down the description of his crimson flame ability, a new set of runes shimmering before him.

Ability rank: Divine]

Attributes: Infernal, Divine Embers]

Infernal: The ravaging crimson will not stop burning until it has turned to ash all that its caster has wielded it against. The flames can burn through anything, so long as the caster’s energy will suffice.]

Megumi paused and stared at the description for a while, particularly at the word ’caster,’ which was mentioned twice. A few thoughts permeated his mind as he pondered.

He now knew that his reason for not enjoying using the crimson flame ability was right all along. At first, he hadn’t been able to discern it, but when he began using the ability, he discovered that his innate energy kept running low even after he stopped channeling it. And now he knew why.

These flames would continue to burn away at anything they latched onto, something that he intended to burn, and wouldn’t stop burning until it was turned to ash, draining whatever reserves of energy he had. In the end, he or the thing he had willed to burn would have to give out.

With thoughts still in his mind, he gazed at the last attribute.

Divine embers: The divine flames can heal, but at a great cost]

He narrowed his eyes and shifted back a bit, his legs suddenly trembling. He didn’t like what he had just read one bit.

’Great cost?’

He bit down on his lip and shook his head.

’Damnit, damnit’

He couldn’t even be bothered to try to create theories around this strange attribute of his ability, given how simple the description had been. He had to pay to be able to use his power.

But he couldn’t think of it for long, as he quickly dismissed the runes describing his crimson flame ability and summoned new ones.

A new set of runes describing his Divine Light ability shimmered before him.

Divine light: The moon child’s most divine creation]
