Chapter 52: For France

"So, that will be all, the designing of the ships will come after," Napoleon II said with a tone of finality.

"I don’t mind it," Giraud said. "So long as the French will build a ship that will dominate the British fleet, I’m willing to wait."

"After seeing the weapons earlier," Napoleon I said and continued. "I am betting on your vision, this better be worth the wait."

"Everyone thank you for your trust in this, I will make sure to not let you down," Napoleon II said, bowing his head lightly.

"The meeting is now adjourned, thank you for your time," Napoleon I said and the officials began to leave one by one, but Napoleon II stayed.

Napoleon II waited until they were alone with his father.

"Next week," Napoleon I said. "You’ll marry Princess Elisabeth and become the Emperor of France. Are you ready for the transition?"

"I am prepared father, you have prepared me after all. Though I ask something."

"What?"

"An emperor must produce an heir, which is me, but why did you stop at me? You could have continued so that I have siblings and more candidates for the throne."

Napoleon I looked at him and said. "Because the moment you spoke to me when you were just a child, I figured you were enough."

"But don’t you love your mother? Marie Louise? Because if I were to have a beautiful woman like Princess Elisabeth, I’m sure everyday there will be action," Napoleon II said with a chuckle.

"Well I did think of that but there is this lingering thought of producing a second heir. But it’s going to be a problem if there will be multiple children vying for the throne. I have seen it in history where children of the king would do anything, conspiring, backstabbing, all manners of treachery be done unto the crown prince. Though the real reason is that you are a boy and with it, the heir to the throne is secured, and having another children would be like I said, political, the Austrian might use the other for leverage."

"I see, well I am confident that it won’t happen to me father, I will make a lot of babies with Princess Elisabeth and secure the Empire."

"It’s fine with me. You are the emperor, you can do whatever you want," Napoleon I smiled. "But if Princess Elisabeth had an affair like Josephine did, how would you handle the situation?"

"Father, if Elisabeth even dared to do that to me, I will strip her of her titles and send her back to Bavaria," Napoleon II said without hesitation.

Napoleon I watched him closely. There was no humor in his son’s expression now.

"No mercy?" Napoleon I asked.

"Yes father, such an act like that is like betraying France itself. You may have mercy on Josephine at the time Father, but not me. Elisabeth is mine and I am hers."

"That certainty," Napoleon I said at last, "is either strength or blindness."

"It’s discipline," Napoleon II replied. "Affection without boundaries destroys authority. I won’t let the throne become weak because of sentiment."

Napoleon I let out a slow breath and nodded once.

"You speak like a ruler," he said. "Not like a husband."

"I can be both," Napoleon II said. "But not at the same time."

A faint smile crossed Napoleon I’s face, then faded just as quickly.

"You’ve surpassed me there," he admitted. "I tried to rule with love beside power. It cost me time. And leverage."

He turned and walked a few steps toward the window, hands clasped behind his back.

"Elisabeth understands what she’s marrying into?" he asked.

"She does," Napoleon II answered. "She chose France knowing exactly what it demands. She doesn’t see the crown as jewelry. She sees it as duty."

Napoleon I glanced back. "And if she falters?"

"Then France comes first," Napoleon II said. "Always."

The words settled into the room without echo.

Napoleon I nodded again, slower this time.

"Good," he said. "Because once you sit on that throne, people will test you. Not openly. Quietly. Through rumor. Through scandal. Through your wife."

"I’m aware," Napoleon II replied. "That’s why I’m drawing the lines now."

Napoleon I returned to the table and rested a hand on its edge.

"I am going to give you advice, my son," Napoleon I said.

"I’ll be glad to hear it father, an advice to such a great emperor of France," Napoleon II said.

"Things are going better for the Empire of France. Her economy is the largest in Europe and possibly the world, we produce technology never seen before, and our military is advancing thanks to your foresight. It may look like France will be at the peak of its power but there are times that you must have to slow down."

He continued. "I once dominated the continental Europe, and I thought I had the strongest military and whenever I marched I thought I could take whatever I wanted. But, I was wrong. I was humbled, defeated from Russia and Spain, and lost all the progress I have made. So my son, you have to learn the value of contentment and know when to stop," Napoleon I finished. "Not because you are weak, but because restraint preserves strength."

He turned fully now, facing his son.

"There will always be another reform to push. Another system to replace. Another frontier that looks inefficient to your eyes. But an empire is not measured by how fast it moves—it is measured by how long it holds."

"I understand," he said. "Momentum without consolidation creates cracks. Cracks become fault lines."

Napoleon I gave a short nod. "Exactly."

"You conquered Europe with speed," Napoleon II continued. "I will secure it with permanence. When I move, it will be because the foundation can carry the weight."

His father studied him, searching for hesitation. He found none—but he also found patience.

"That is all I wanted to hear," Napoleon I said. "Power that pauses is harder to overthrow than power that charges."

Napoleon II stepped closer.

"I won’t repeat your mistakes," he said. "But I won’t discard your lessons either. France exists as it does because of you. I’ll make sure it stays that way."

Napoleon I’s expression softened, just slightly.

"Good," he said. "Then my work is finished."

He extended his hand.

Napoleon II took it without hesitation.

Their grip was firm. Equal. Not a father guiding a child, not a son defying a legend—just two rulers acknowledging the transfer of weight.

"For France," Napoleon I said.

"For France," Napoleon II replied.

They released their hands.
