Chapter 41: Training Session again

A few minutes after the dance, Lysandra suddenly frowned. "Wait, Ryan, Sera. Where did that music come from?"

It had been so soul stirring. So powerful. Almost like something she had never heard—something that the musicians of the palace could not even compare to. Or maybe, it was not that the music Ryan played was better, but it was different. Unique.

Ryan sweated inwardly. He couldn’t say that it came from his new abilities!

As usual, Sera came in clutch.

"Oh, I awakened a new Skill that lets me play soul stirring music. It’s a skill from my Soul Mage sub-class."

Lysandra’s eyes lit up. "Really? That’s good." She nodded. "This skill might seem to be useless at a glance, but it is very useful in retrospect."

Ryan nodded. "That’s true. Sis underestimates it too much. This can be useful in a lot of situations—well." He grinned. "One of the people I admire once said that there is no useless skill, only incapable skill users. So, surely this skill isn’t useless either."

Both Seraphina and Lysandra felt that the quote was powerful.

Ryan smiled broadly. He remembered the exact quote, grinning inwardly. There is no useless Gu, only useless Gu Masters!

Cough. Cough.

It was from one of his favorite pieces of literature, but what would these country bumpkins from Mugen know?

"Anyway, mom," Sera said. "Get lost."

Ryan’s smile turned wry.

Lysandra frowned. "Why are you kicking me out?"

"We need to train and you are being very distracting. So, please excuse yourself."

Their mother sighed, looked at Ryan again, then decided to leave with a pout. Before she left, though—she did not forget to give both of her children a quick heal.

"Ryan, I will prepare your favorite food for breakfast, okay?"

Ryan blushed. "Yeah mom."

Then, Lysandra left with much lighter steps.

Truly, a dance had healed her.

"She seems guilty as heck," Sera said with a frown. "Now that she is out, mind telling me what happened between you?"

"It is better that you don’t know."

After all, Ryan did not want to make Sera have a bad taste in her own mouth. Their mother made a mistake long ago, and that was that. It just needed to be forgotten and forgiven—there was no need to tell it to everyone and make a scene.

On the other hand, Sera frowned, her face becoming weird as an image appeared in her head.

Their mother, Ryan, both of them doing something behind the scenes that made their mother feel guilty...

She couldn’t help but reach weird conclusions.

It couldn’t be, she thought with a deep breath. It really couldn’t be.

But what if it was?

Then, it would make sense why he didn’t want to tell her. Even when she knew all of his other dirty secrets.

Huff...

She decided not to pry into his memory. For her own mental well being.

"Anyway—no time to waste. Let’s start today’s training. Goal in this session is for you to be capable of fighting me while I use ½ of your strength."

Even with a single session’s training last time, Ryan could already match up to Seraphina’s simple attack pattern when she was only using ¼ of his own strength. But that was far from enough, she wanted him to match her at equal strengths at the very least.

The training began again.

It was a brutal thrashing with Seraphina attacking and him trying his best to keep up with her.

Seraphina’s training method was grounded in brutal simplicity: use every skill, no matter how complex, to reinforce the basics—attack, defend, move, and strategize.

Like a fighting game with limited inputs, Ryan was taught to treat his powers not as flashy tricks but as tools to enhance core combat instincts. Each ability had to serve a purpose: dodging, countering, reading the opponent, or creating openings. No matter what the complex abilities he gained were, he should use it to improve the basics as he developes.

Seraphina easily dodged a punch that Ryan threw, then sweeped a foot under him—making him roll on the floor.

She did not waste the chance when he was down and send a kick right at his nuts.

Filled with fear, Ryan used Speed Burst with sheer, brutal instinct.

His speed increased drastically and he dodged.

"Sera, not there! That’s a no go zone."

"Then don’t let me hit."

A kick smashed into his face, sending him sliding across the floor.

Ryan quickly repositioned himself with a huff and ran straight at Seraphina.

"Too easy to read. You are full of openings."

She send a punch towards his face but Ryan grinned.

Music Heart!

A sudden, shocking sound of an explosion made her lose focus for a short second. Her ears rang. Her eyes grew blurry.

Ryan fist flew right at her face—

She vanished, appearing behind him.

Ryan groaned.

"Oi, that’s cheating," he said. "You shouldn’t use that much power."

"I just used a skill of my own. I am still using just as much strength as you." Seraphina shrugged. "But yes. That was a good tactic. Most people would be too stunned to react."

Ryan grinned. "That’s why I asked for this kind of ability in the first place. It can stun people, make them relaxed, and also has all sorts of other uses—it’s very versatile."

Seraphina nodded. "Now, train to use it along with the rest of your skillset. Don’t let even a single skill go to waste."

He nodded and their spar continued.

The training allowed him to familiarize himself with all his skills. She made him utilize as many of them as possible.

Speed Burst, Apex Predator, Luck Sucker, Vitality Theft, Enhanced Vision, Music Heart...

All of it was used interchangeably to enhance one of the core tenets of combat: offense, defense, movement, and strategy.

But then, Ryan’s mana was depleted.

He clenched his hand, feeling an emptiness in his gut. freёnovelkiss.com

"Now, it’s time for your gym. You couldn’t do a 100 pushups last time—but you were healed continuously by mother, and that should have increased your growth rate rapidly. It is very easy to improve as a newbie.

"Do a 100 pushups. And this time, don’t let your mind make you lose."

Seraphina commanded.

Ryan nodded and began his pushups.

Last time, he had barely been able to do fourty—this time, he did not want to fall so easily.

He remembered her guidance: The mind gives up way before the body does.

This time, he would not let his mind give up so easily.

1 pushup.

10.

20.

30.

40.

It became a bit harder.

50.

Much harder.

Ryan felt sweat drip from his nose. He could sense every inch of his body as if it weighed a hundred tons. His arms felt too weak, his body needed rest!

I should give up and try again tomorrow.
