Chapter 141: Arc 3, Chapter 51: Another Day Forward

The dawn broke once more, sunlight beamed past the curtains—her eyes waxed open, blonde strands webbed over the pillow. Jotou took a breath as she stared at the ceiling.

The same ceiling she had seen too many times now. A small smirk alit on her face, "Kaleb. Daiyu. The funfair..." Jotou muttered, seemingly having greater memory of this dream than any of the previous ones.

Perhaps it was because it occurred several months ago as opposed to years. ’Having regrets is stupid. I have to live with that mistake. I just have to learn from it and try not to mess up again.

And if I do, I’ll try again. If I fall, I’ll stand back up. Nothing in this life makes sense; nothing has purpose unless you give it one. I can’t live on spite alone. So, I don’t think I will.’

Jotou’s head fell to her left—a purple headband atop messy long hair she saw. The brunette sitting at the side of the bed, removed the strands of hair stuck to her face.

’I need to have a goal, a purpose. Otherwise, I’m just living for the sake of living. Alright Jotou, you can do this all again.’ Jotou got up from bed, a soft smile still worn, "Morning."

"Mm... Morning," Fumeko grumbled, rubbing her forehead.

’Here comes the usual dialogue.’

Jotou watched as Fumeko winced, wrinkling her brows tight as she grunted holding her head.

"Meko? What’s wrong?" Jotou threw the sheets aside and paced over to the brunette’s bed.

"Just, a really bad headache," Fumeko shook her head, trying to ease the pins pricking at her mind.

Jotou’s eyes widened... ’It’s getting worse. Okay, time to do this all again. One by one, slowly, but as quick as possible.’

_

"You’re serious? That’s the reason for the headaches?" Fumeko queried.

"All of our headaches... You’re telling us we died, but not the last time?" Hotaru glanced to the blonde.

"And, my magic can put on a show to hurt people?" Asobi’s eyes softened, the news of them dying not sitting well with her.

Jotou nodded, "I need to talk to all of you separately." Jotou smiled a little, "Don’t worry. I have a plan and we have a little trip to make."

Four breakfasts around the table, Aviv interrupting, the morning filled with the same faces again, the carriages parked in the same positions. Every last detail, including the last loop Jotou added.

They found themselves inside, hours going by as Jotou talked to each one of them privately once more, not skipping any detail. Surprisingly, their interactions went quite similarly to last time...

They all gathered in Jotou and Fumeko’s room once more. "I know none of you have any memory of this, but I hope me telling you at least could make a fake memory of it."

"I can see all of it now!" Asobi brought her wand out, forming the light into the various scenes Jotou described.

"We don’t need to go through all of it again," Fumeko snarked.

"Oh, sorry! Jotou, do you think I could learn all those cool, awe-inspiring spells again?" Asobi’s legs shook.

"I’ll give you the same answer as last time. I’m not sure; you didn’t even learn, you just did it without you even knowing."

"So, you want us to go to that grass border and get whatever notes the past, us, left behind?" Hotaru repeated to make sure.

"Pretty much."

"And the more times we reset, the worse the consequences?" Fumeko held a hand to her chin.

"Yeah. The device apparently can’t be used twice. It records and reverts; and it reverts as many times as it needs. The only way to turn it off is to destroy it. And luckily, there’s only one of this device.

If we lose, Frye and the rogue battalion will invade Hartamat after destroying the device, so no chances to reset after that. The entire experiment is the time loops and trying to change their outcome.

If the animals are feeling it, then it’s only a matter of time before we might just be incapacitated; leaving only me."

"And everyone in the rogue battalion. Assuming they’re resetting like us," Fumeko added.

Jotou squinted, "I didn’t think about that... Still, they have reinforcements from hell knows where. Even if half of them go fatigued or incapacitated, they have more bodies to throw."

"Okay, I’ll go get our driver then," Hotaru stood up.

"Yup. You said your note had proof that it was you too, anything to further prove my case."

Hotaru’s tail swayed, "Jotou, I already believe you."

"Thanks..." Jotou perked up, "Anyway, I just hope that failsafe worked and we can pull the string back to get the notes. After that, Fumeko needs to go steal the documents from the minister again."

"Got it," Fumeko replied.

"This time, don’t flaunt it whilst Hotaru, Asobi and me talk to him. We can get in contact with Major Schroeder for the fight with the minister’s help and then report him with the evidence to the major.

Then, we go in for the fight tomorrow and attack earlier. Hopefully, we can get our hands on the device, win this fight, lose none of you and destroy it once and for all," a spark gleamed in her eyes. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

They nodded, a sense of vigour from the blonde’s confidence spreading like lightning across the sky.

_

"I see a tall border of grass," Aviv relayed through the little door.

Asobi poked her hand out, shaping her fingers like a sock puppet, "Thank you! Jotou says we should stop by a tree," Asobi moved her fingers like a mouth.

"The zebras, they’re still here," Jotou spotted in the distance.

"Is one of them...?" Fumeko saw a zebra lying on its side by the water’s edge, "Now wait, it’s still kicking," she could see its legs move a bit.

"Poor thing’s probably in anguish like the rest of us," Hotaru’s ears folded over her head.

"How’s everyone doing by the way? The headaches and all," Jotou faced them.

"Doing great!" Asobi threw her wand up to make an invisible dome.

"The headache’s died down, but this heat will be the death of me," Fumeko wiped the sweat off her forehead.

"Maybe we should’ve done the clothes shopping and the haircut for you first..." Jotou pondered. They walked forward, leaving the carriage and Aviv behind a tree as they approached the edge.

The grass inwards brushed the same height against them whilst the taller grass did not appear too different; it had only barely been a day since Jotou last saw it after all.

"Come on, come on, please," Jotou crouched down, recalling where all of them had tossed their papers. Jotou’s eyes widened upon seeing the strand of white string still on this side, "It worked..."

With a bright smile and a small chuckle, Jotou pointed out where all four of their notes were. They reeled them in like fishing rods to find a note attached to each.

Dirt-ridden with one or two ants crawling on some—Fumeko brushed hers off and opened the paper.

She read it, her brows furrowing with each sentence, "This is... definitely something I wrote..." her eyes darted away, folding the note back up in a hurry.

"Don’t throw them away. Put the string back on and toss it back," Jotou pursed her lips, "Just in case."

"Yup, this is definitely a puppy I drew!" Asobi showed her note, some things written on it, but the giant drawing of a puppy’s face took all the attention.

Hotaru checked hers, humming as she read through. A small smile appeared, ears folding down and tail stopping before she peered to Jotou, "No further evidence needed."

"Alright. I already know what I wrote," Jotou still opened up the note written in her old world’s font.

’Hey Jotou, this is a little redundant since you remember pretty much everything. Still, everyone’s doing it so why not? Hm, not much of a fan of falling in line and doing group projects, are we?

At this point in time, I’m worried we won’t make it back by dusk. Which only means, you’re probably reading this still stuck within the border.

Fumeko’s still writing something down, I think she’s crossed out a hundred words by now. Asobi just finished hers and is trying to sneak away to the zebras. Fumeko will probably pull her back.

And Hotaru... Well, even if I hate the heat, the afternoon Sun and the light breeze has this nice glow around her red hair and her ears keep flickering to the wind.

I’ve taken a glance at her way too many times now. I think I caught her staring back too, a few times. I hope you’re the only one reading this... Burn this note once this is all over please.

Anyway, if some terrible thing happened, someone died again, something like that; then I’m here for you. Keep fighting, keep standing. Tomorrow’s always another chance. Another day forward.

Let’s not live like zombies, okay? We can do this, over and over if we have to. Because, they’re worth it; every memory I make with them. I at least have them in this crazy world.

Besides, I know you want to see Trailon on their knees. I know you want to win. Don’t let your determination end here. Prove them wrong and live your life.

We still have some unfinished business with Jack Tenner and the Frosting Wind, don’t we? :P’ Jotou finished reading and folded the note back with a small smile.

She tied the string around it and tossed it back. "Ready to go?" Hotaru walked up, twirling her bluish sleeves. Fumeko and Asobi sauntered back to the carriage, sweating with every step.

"Yeah," Jotou took a breath, looking out into the tall grass. She glanced back to Hotaru smirking.

"What?" Hotaru cocked a brow—her ears bristled.

Jotou shook her head, "Nothing. Let’s go shall we?" ’I know she asked me to ask her again this time. But, I’ll ask her once we’ve finished all of this. I’ll put it aside for now.’
