Reincarnated Into A Dead Woman's Body In Another World-Chapter 367: Arc 5, - 61: My Ride Has Wings
Beneath her was the black-bricked street and above was the cloud-covered sky. The sound of the engine disappeared, hearing the final yell of her name—for the vehicle had torn through the street before her, still in sight.
However, wind still swished past her face and fluttered the two scarf-like strips of fabric behind her; her body was still being thrown forward at a declining velocity.
With one eye open she looked up and just as the tip of her shoe was about to scratch the road. "Woosh!" She appeared several metres above the ground in the direction of the speeding vehicle.
In her sights was the flying beast that tailed the car. Gravity took its course, but while in the air, the brunette flung herself into purplish-black shadows and appeared higher once more.
Again, then again and then again. Clouds of shadow popped into existence and poofed out of it as she blinked her way into the air.
Jotou’s clammy hands gripped harder onto the steering wheel and she kept checking the rearview mirror; her foot eased off the accelerator and was twitching for the left pedal. It was open road before her...
’I could try to swerve the car around and go back. If I don’t total it first... And that thing might swoop down the second I slam the breaks. Not like it won’t already if I don’t turn into an alley right the hell now.’ "Anyone have eyes on her for hell’s sake?"
All of them had their heads out the back window with widened eyes. "She’s okay!" Asobi’s jade-green eyes followed the trail of blink spells catching up to them while going upwards. "I don’t think we should stop."
Jotou groaned and kept driving.
"Woosh!" "Woosh!" "Woosh!" "Hck!" Fumeko had her dagger out and stabbed into the scale and hide of the creature. The creature on the other hand, had descended down to swipe at the car, but instead screeched. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
Its head swivelled back and two yellow eyes with slitted pupils glared to its behind. Both hands on the pommel of the dagger and her body swaying in the wind, she was practically a ferret on an elephant.
Her gaze met the glare and she stared daggers back. "SCROARR!" The lizard-like screech came from its open maw, with rows of sharp teeth.
She could see it all now—the dull greenish-yellow scales, the wings had a set of claws on them each, the few protrusions of bone from its head and down its leathery back—all the while the wind deafened her.
The wyvern took higher into the skies, away from the car and the barely present glow of the streetlamps; its large wings kept pace with the vehicle.
Its barbed tail, like a morning star, were translucent bone with tips of black. The reason she could observe it of course was because-
"Woosh!" "Swish!"
Fortunately, the tail missed its target and the brunette was once again entering freefall. She grabbed the thin ends of her dark purple scarf and pulled them forward; in a flourish, it extended into a hoodless cloak around her entire form.
The cloak bellowed like a cape behind her before she blinked forward to catch up. She blinked past the barbed tail. "Swoosh!"—narrowly avoiding it as she stabbed into the back and held onto the bony protrusions from its spine.
"SCREECH!"
The wyvern thrashed left and right in mid-air; it had to focus its attention down, but it was losing distance from the distraction.
Fumeko held on tight, the sunken dagger was dragged across the flesh from the momentum, spurting out dark crimson fluid in the process. She kept her lips sealed and her eyes barely open, while she had to face the cold gale-force winds.
Her hair unravelled, her cloak flapped against her legs—the girl in purple held her dagger tight and blinked forward again. She caught onto another spiking bone and stepped into shadow once more.
The lizard-like entity snarled and swooped down and back up abruptly in an attempt to shake her off. However- "SHLICK!" "REORRR!" She stuck her dagger right at the side of its head and held onto the beast.
She mumbled without opening her mouth too wide, "Spider Walk." Shadows trailed down her fingers into her palms, forming tiny little hooks across it as she grappled her feet and free hand on it without issue.
The wyvern rolled around and flew upside down for a few seconds, but she was glued to its head nevertheless as it rolled back up.
Fumeko dislodged her dagger from whatever cartilage she struck and clambered forward. The creature was slowed down significantly and even the brunette could barely see the car that turned a corner.
While it tailed the speeding vehicle still, its scale and hide began to bubble and globulate in multiple spots across the front of its body. The leather hide squelched and squished like jelly as bones began to spike out of it like spears.
Her alarmed eyes disappeared into shadow as its head, grew hundreds of barbs like the ones on its tail, turning its head into a pincushion of black-tipped bones.
Fumeko blinked back into existence and grabbed as cautiously as she could into the forest of bone spikes. Her hand latched onto one side, her feet she had to spread apart to avoid the barb right in between her legs.
The porcupine-like wyvern then—"CRASH!" "CRUSH!"—thrashed and bashed itself against buildings. Even though Fumeko had a solid grip, it did not aid in avoiding the what seemed to be venomous barbs.
"WISHK!" "Woosh!"
With merely a hole in her enchanted cloak, Fumeko escaped the bony spike that ejected from beneath her. She blinked towards its right eye the size of her head and grasped onto a bone protrusion.
She kept her face away from the wind and growled out, "I’ll make sure your entire cult’s burned away before I leave Burnetrout asshole." "SHLICK!" She stabbed the gleaming purple dagger into its scowling yellow eye.
The membrane burst with a sickening squelch and thick, viscous fluid jetted out irregularly. Blood and gunk splattered across her form with a wet thwack, much to her dismay and disgust; fortunately she kept her mouth closed.
Louder than any of the times before, the wyvern roared and screeched—the ear-piercing rumbled through the streets in sync with the faint thunder above.
With its one good eye it continued its flight, but it flew left and right whilst projecting a burst of bony barbs from around its spewing eye socket.
Fumeko blinked back onto its body, her dagger eating away at the fluid. She was only followed by venomous barbs that mutated and formed all over its body however, trying to hunt and pierce her once and for all.
Quick as she was, she had to think faster while her eyes were set on the other unspoiled eye of the wyvern. At the very least, it would allow them to get far enough away for this thing not to track.
Opting for sharper yet smaller barbs, hundreds formed from its scales. Fumeko grunted as the slime and blood over her got blown away by the gusts, leaving but a few wet spots.
This damn thing just wouldn’t let up! Getting to the other eye and pulling of the same thing twice was becoming less and less of a possibility by the amount of spikes it seemed to be protecting itself with.
She was constantly blinking all over its body; it seemed its focus was on her and whatever was left was focusing on tracking the car—now a speck on the road below.
Which is exactly why the shapeshifter did not notice the incoming white blur of feathers. "CRAW!" Moving at an unnatural speed, light green wisps of mana trailed her pearly white wings that ended in black.
Kira flew towards the remaining eye and with her long pinkish-grey legs, struck multiple times in quick succession against the membrane—clawing and scratching into it.
"SCREECH!" Perhaps not as effective as her dagger, but the persistence of Kira’s quick blows from her talons caused enough damage to draw blood and the wyvern to roar out in agony—now blinded.
Aided by the wind, Kira took the skies with open wings and glided backwards. Fumeko—with furrowed brows—locked gazes with Kira’s piercing green eyes which had a circular green glow. The secretary bird flew leftwards right after.
The wyvern snarled and its form began to shrink scale by scale. Its wings diverted right and began flying off course from the speeding car.
Taking her cue, Fumeko blinked and leapt off the wyvern. Her brown eyes scanned for the car speeding in the distance and mad a beeline towards it.
"She’s coming back!" Asobi warned.
"Woosh!" Fumeko appeared halfway out the window of the back seats. Asobi, Tiffany and Hotaru all reached over to pull her in. Panting and with a huff of relief, Fumeko lied across all three of them.
"Thou befell a mighty drake detective; Hardly does one such as I believe thou art not befitting of knighthood," Tiffany sighed.
"Well, it kinda flew away and it wasn’t technically a dragon," even so, a grin curled up on her lips, "But all in a day’s work."
"What? Becoming the leading cause of heart attacks?" Hotaru’s eyes glazed over. "It would’ve taken you maybe five seconds to tell us what you were going to do, at most."
"Stilllll, it was a really cool trick," Asobi’s head tilted further and further. "At least everyone’s safe now and we’re not being chased by a giant creepy super cool flying thing anymore!"
"See wolfy, she gets it," Fumeko smirked.
"You’re covered in muck," Hotaru’s nose snivelled and moved away from the brunette’s hair that was still wet and a few leftover bits that stuck to her enchanted clothing.
Fumeko blinked into the passenger seat and glanced over to Jotou, "Sorry. You too," Fumeko spared a glance to the redhead behind her.
"We’ll talk about you jumping out of speeding cars later," Jotou side-eyed. She took a deep breath and worried for the rattling engine, "Night’s not over yet," she muttered.
Upon escaping their fray, some respite washed over them now at the very least. With map in hand, they were able to find their way back to the company at a pretty decent pace.
_
"Left here, it’s right around the corner," Hotaru guided.
Jotou had slowed down her driving and took the final turn towards the company. She saw the corner building and empty road and confidently put her foot down on the brake pedal...
She put her foot down on the brake pedal- She slammed her foot down on the brake pedal- "The brake’s not working, guys, the brake’s not working," her voice got into more and more of a panic.
Everyone heard the bicycle pump-like sound deflating every time Jotou kicked down on the pedal, but the car continued its devious movement towards the building at forty kilometres per hour.
Fumeko blinked out of the car and stood at the doors of the building. Jotou pursed her lips and looked out the windshield towards her...Beyond taking her foot off the accelerator-
"Jotou, the brake lever," Hotaru uttered.
"Oh right-"
"Crash!"
"Ow!" Jotou hit her forehead on the steering wheel whilst the others held onto various parts of the car. With a crunch, the front of the car met the wall as it drove onto the pavement. It was less of a crash and more of a thud.
"Tsss..."
Black smoke arose from the engine and the exhaust breathed its last breath. Something was definitely still running though, because the entire car was still rumbling a little with mechanical sounds.
Jotou took the key out of ignition and pulled the brake lever. "You’re not supposed to pull that thing while driving anyway." Bits of glass hanging from the shattered back window finally fell onto the ground with a few clinks.
One of the back wheels came loose and dangled off the pavement. "All that talk and you still ended up in the same position as Daiyu," Fumeko snarked as she walked up to the driver’s side door.
Jotou raised and pointed a finger at her, "Daiyu had a straight line going down a hill; I drove from Mandrake to Fleur while a damn wyvern chased us and not only managed to outmanoeuvre it, but the other cars chasing us too. So you can shut it detective."
"I don’t think you shut it off correctly," Hotaru voiced and got out of the car.
"You can shut it too."
"What was that?" her crimson ear twitched.
Jotou stared back, "I’m not scared of you."
"We’ll see about that."
The blonde’s complexion slowly grew pinker.
Asobi gave a hand and helped Tiffany get out of the car. "So Stella, how was it adventuring with us? We didn’t get grievously horribly injured this time so, it’s not the full experience, but was it still spectacular?" she beamed.
Tiffany gave a chuckle, "Tis-"
The front door of the company opened up, "Get inside, now," Morgana held the door open; expressionlessly she ushered them all into the building.
Fumeko, being the last one to enter, paused and looked up to her, "Thanks for the help..."
For the briefest of moments, Fumeko swore she noticed Morgana give a nod. "Later kid, still lots to do," she pushed Fumeko in.
"Yeah, yeah..."
