Reincarnated into a Doomed Novel as an Unknown Extra-Chapter 49: Tragedy
Chapter 49: Tragedy
"Cough... Cough." Andrea coughed aggressively, trying to gasp for breath.
"Breathe slowly and just take your time." Celestina whispered to him as she cast another spell to calm him.
I stared at them for just a moment before shifting my gaze back to the passage that was in front of me.
After helping Andrea to make his condition stable, the challenge started officially and one of the walls went down revealing a dark path.
Now, Celestina was still helping Andrea while Maxwell and I were guarding the exit for whatever was out there.
Seriously, how nice would it be if there were only some traps separating us from the centre of the maze.
"Oh how terrible would it be if there were only traps separating us from the centre of the maze!" Maxwell suddenly shouted, his hand pulling his hair slightly.
Looking at him with confusion I asked: "wouldn’t that be good? I really prefer traps."
He looked at me as if I was an idiot before opening his mouth: "Kid, it’s a maze. If we were lucky then we can easily leave, if not, we will need the monsters to not die of starvation!"
Realization hit me instantly, all our resources were with Cecil and Paul, and both Maxwell and Celestina were in similar conditions. Additionally, I only have the food I got from killing monsters.
But would they be enough? As he said, it would depend completely on luck.
*Tak*
All of a sudden, we heard the sound of a light step in the dark hallway.
"K-kid, what was that?" Maxwell asked as a big egg bomb appeared in his hand.
Immediately, I enhanced my eyes then looked at the path, and what I saw made me curse inwardly.
It was a wolf that looked as if it was completely made of shadows.
From its legs to the fur and even its eyes, all of them were completely black as if I was looking at pure darkness.
Hell, even the soul was black. That thing was made completely for stealth, I didn’t even notice the soul until I focused on it.
It was crawling silently to us step by step, which suggested that the step sound was a mistake.
I described it to Maxwell, and immediately he started gritting his teeth. "This piece of shit thinks it can attack me by surprise? Bullshit!"
He raised his hand and got ready to throw the egg, but suddenly—

A strange sound came out from under the wolf.
I looked at its leg and noticed that the slab under it was pressed down as a button.
I opened my mouth to say something, but all of a sudden, a pillar of blue flames came out of nowhere, lighting the passage and burning the wolf alive.
"GRAAH!"
Covered in flames and growling in pain, the wolf tried to roll on the ground to put out the fire.
*Click*
We heard another click, and the next moment, a bunch of lightning spears came out from under the ground before piercing the wolf and suspending it in the air.
"..."
We stared silently at the burning wolf above the spears as if we were looking at our possible future.
"I... take back my words." I muttered under my breath. "I prefer monsters rather than traps."
All of a sudden, a water ball flew past me and doused the fire that covered the wolf.
Turning around, I found Andrea trying to stand up. His pale face got back its colors and almost all his injuries had disappeared after Celestina’s help.
Her holy affinity was truly powerful. Even though she hadn’t reached tier 3 yet, her healing didn’t even leave a scar — unlike light affinity healing.
It was a shame that it didn’t have any known offensive spells.
"Cough... we can’t let the corpse get wasted you know." Andrea said, his voice still shaking. "Additionally, monsters and traps aren’t our only problem now."
Celestina had hesitated for a moment before asking: "So... there were traitors."
His lips had curled into a sad smile before nodding to her.
He then started telling us how he ended up in that miserable state.
Tkiee and Maria from team 1 had taken advantage of everyone letting their guards down to kill 4 people from team 7 — which is Andrea’s team — to return to Eldoria.
Their selfish action caused an argument between the teams that were still there. Team 7 and 6 wanted to kill the remaining people of team 1 saying that they were a threat, but team 3 stood with them saying that it wasn’t their fault.
Unfortunately, they couldn’t fix that peacefully and ended up fighting each other. In the end, 3 more died and someone had kicked Andrea in the stomach, throwing him to the gate by accident and leading him to lose his consciousness.
It was truly a tragedy, a tragedy that no one expected.
Like seriously, how did all that happen when we were drinking and laughing together just a few minutes before?
Was leaving this place really worth killing and causing chaos for?
I didn’t know the answer, and I didn’t want to know it. Now because of them, only 49 challengers left without considering the chance of someone else dying after Andrea had left.
"You were wrong though..." Celestina suddenly said, and I couldn’t agree more.
Despite everything, blaming a whole team for the mistakes of their traitors was wrong.
Andrea had lowered his head in shame before muttering: "I know... but you can’t blame us." Clenching his fists and gritting his teeth he hissed: "You won’t understand — not until you lose the people who lived and fought with you for months. It’s that fucking couple’s fault!"
I stared at him silently, not knowing what to say. But I didn’t have to, because the next moment Maxwell wrapped his arm around his shoulder and handed him 2 eggs.
"Keep them with you, and once we leave this place and find them — you can just feed them the eggs!"
Andrea focused on the eggs with confusion before asking: "Ah... Max, I wanted to ask — didn’t you use all your eggs? Where did these come from?"
Maxwell’s expression turned into sadness instantly. "Those sons of bitches! My reward was 5 rings filled with egg bombs, like... why the fuck?!"
"Pfft." Celestina was barely holding her laugh, meanwhile Andrea and I just looked at him with sympathy.
"Cough... Anyway, who will go and get the wolf?" I asked the most important question. After all, we couldn’t afford to waste any food as Andrea said.
The next moment, Maxwell and Andrea looked at me with wide smiles.
"I think you should be the one to go, kid. What would my stone and wind affinities do? I will reward you with a big egg!"
"Your name is Yami, right? Don’t worry, if you get injured like me then our dear saintess can heal you."
"..."
Were they trying to sacrifice me? I didn’t know about them but I definitely didn’t want to get cooked alive!
Celestina suddenly started staring daggers at them before grabbing me to her embrace and shouting at them:
"Are you really trying to send a child? And you are calling yourselves adults?"
"But—!"
"He—!"
"Stop talking." She cut them off before ordering them: "You both will go together. I will cast a shield on you."
As he ended her talking, she cast waves of golden light that started covering their bodies.
’Is... Is she an angle?’ I couldn’t help but look at her as a saviour after what she did.
In the covering process, I noticed how they looked at me furiously, and as a response I just smirked at them secretly without letting Celestina notice.
From how Maxwell was gripping an egg bomb as if trying to not throw it I knew they noticed my smirk.
"Fine... If we ended up dying, then it’s your fault, dear sa...in...tess." Andrea pulled Maxwell from his collar as they moved to the dark passage.
Maxwell took a deep, really deep breath as if he was tasting it for the last time, then Andrea took the first step forward.
