Reincarnated To Evolve My Bee Empire-Chapter 258: Improving immunity
Of course, when I needed luck the most, the system was stingy with it as usual.
〔For improving endurance, you have a choice of next genes: 'Deeper Breathing', 'Fat Padding', and 'Hibernation I'.〕
〔Deeper Breathing: increases stamina recovery and amount of time the owner can spend without breathing by 20%.〕
〔Fat Padding: allows to accumulate fat padding by overeating, which slightly increases defense and maximum health.〕
〔Hibernation I: allows the user to enter a state of prolonged hibernation, during which their metabolic rate slows by 30%.〕
"Oh, this is all such trash…" I muttered, picking 'Deeper Breathing' immediately. At least it improved stamina recovery.
This meant I had to put another point into endurance and pray for luck again. Ambrosia and Tabletina watched me with palpable concern.
〔For improving endurance, you have a choice of next genes: 'Photosynthesis I', 'Increased Pain Threshold', and 'Hibernation I'.〕
〔Photosynthesis I: allows filling up to 10% of daily energy needs via sunlight.〕
〔Increased Pain Threshold: greatly improves pain tolerance.〕
〔Hibernation I: allows the user to enter a state of prolonged hibernation, during which their metabolic rate slows by 30%.〕
I sighed.
"Nothing good, Necty?" Ambrosia asked, slightly raising on her elbows for a moment. Then, the strength left her body, and she fell on the bed again. Her status showed an almost total lack of stamina, although Amby's health was mostly unaffected.
"Hey, hey, don't exert yourself! I think you are more sick than me! Anyway, you can say there's something that's good in general, but it's not what we needed right now. I'm sure that Workharder will be glad to hear that the future broods of bees will require less food, because I'm taking 'Photosynthesis'. It's definitely better than the other options."
"The gene that all plants have?" Tabletina frowned. "It won't make us grow leaves, no?"
I shook my head.
"Of course not! At most, we will turn green. Or red. Or blue. Although I like my current colors, too…"
I shook my head and took the gene.
'Alright, system. Third time's the charm, right? Take pity on me! Give me that immunity gene, or I will file a complaint to the God of Humanity, I swear!'
With this angry and desperate thought, I put another point into endurance.
〔For improving endurance, you have a choice of next genes: 'Efficient Running I', 'Improved Immunity II->III', and 'Chaotic Evolution I->II'.〕
〔Efficient Running I: reduces stamina cost of running and walking by 20%.〕
〔Improved Immunity II->III: reduces chances of falling ill or suffering infections by 60%.〕
〔Chaotic Evolution I->II: with a 10% chance, this gene will be replaced in progeny with a random tier VI gene.〕
"Ah… Now it's doing its usual thing."
I was about to sigh, but began coughing instead. In an instant, Tabletina poured me a cup of herbal tea from a flask on her belt. When my coughing spell ended, I took it with a grateful nod and downed the entire thing in one go.
It was disgustingly bitter, but it did soothe my throat.
"Are you alright, Necty?" Ambrosia rasped out, only to start coughing, too. Tabletina immediately turned to her and began pouring another cup.
"Better than you are, despite all the blood loss, so don't stress yourself out, Amby." I reached out to caress her cheek and smiled wryly. "The system just tempts me again with long-term useful things I can't take from it because I have problems in the short term."
"Ah." Ambrosia nodded in understanding, then took the cup from Tabletina's hands and began sipping on it. Despite the bitterness of the drink, she didn't even grimace at the taste. "Then simply don't concern yourself with them. If they are out of reach, they are unimportant."
"If only this was so easy… Anyway, I have the extra immunity gene now."
I picked the 'Improved Immunity III' gene and paused for a moment.
All things considered, I ought to try taking the 'Improved Immunity IV' gene as well. But putting two more points into endurance when I could go for intelligence, agility, strength, perception—attributes that had so many other incredibly useful genes!
'Then again, considering how many problems with illnesses we had lately, the immunity gene will be very useful even in the long term…'
"What are you thinking about, Father?" Tabletina asked, staring at me intently. "If you got the gene, you must share it with Mother-Queen as soon as possible! That you both are sick at the same time is disastrous and must be fixed immediately. Ah, right. You must want your privacy, is that right? I will leave now, and return with more cures."
Tabletina began gathering her medical kit from the nearby table where she put it when she was examining Ambrosia earlier. I waved my hands in agitation.
"Stop, no! That's *not* what I was thinking." I eyed Ambrosia with concern. "Dear, I'm unsure if you are even healthy enough for that kind of exercise. Even if you just lie down and let me do *all* the work… Ahem. I definitely need to put the rest of the points into endurance."
Ambrosia chuckled.
"Was that what you thought about? Of course, do it, Necty. There are no useless attributes. And perhaps endurance will help you recover faster. As for me… This herbal cure already makes me feel better." Despite her obvious exhaustion, Amby still found in herself to throw me a look hot enough to make my blood run southward.
I forced myself to not look at Tabletina and nodded.
"I didn't think about that, but yes. Endurance improves health regeneration, too… Well, system, give me something nice… Yes! I'm lucky this time!"
〔For improving endurance, you have a choice of next genes: 'Efficient Running I', 'Improved Immunity III->IV', and 'Hibernation I'.〕
I quickly took the fourth tier of the immunity gene. Then I prayed most fervently for my luck to work.
If I snatched the fifth tier, it should give my girls total immunity to illnesses! Or at least, I hoped it would—this gene looked like one with linear progression.
〔For improving endurance, you have a choice of next genes...〕
