Chapter 51: Chapter 51 – Report

Adam entered Director Acelina Brookhaven’s office, closing the door behind him.

Acelina walked around her desk before sitting down in the high-backed chair, gesturing for Adam to take a seat in one of the chairs in front of her.

Adam obeyed in silence, settling into the chair while maintaining a relaxed but attentive posture. He wasn’t exactly nervous, but he wasn’t about to underestimate this conversation either.

The director observed him for several seconds before finally speaking. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"As you already know, Mr. Shadowend," she said in a firm but direct tone, "technically what happened during the tournament was within the legal parameters we established before the matches began."

She opened one of her desk drawers and pulled out several parchments along with a quill that had clearly been enchanted to write automatically.

"Although I specifically asked you to avoid deaths, considering you had only been at the academy for a little over a week," she continued as she placed the parchments neatly on the desk, "both participants—you and Mr. Duskrin—were aware that in real combat, deaths can occur and would not be considered murder if there was no evident malicious intent outside the context of the duel."

She paused before adding in a more serious tone, "What I do need is to complete a full report of the incident for the academy’s records and to send to the families involved. That is why you are here."

Adam nodded. He had expected this. "I understand."

Acelina took the enchanted quill and held it over the parchment while looking directly at Adam. "Tell me what happened during the fight. From your perspective. With as much detail as possible."

Adam took a moment to organize his thoughts before beginning to speak in a neutral, direct tone.

"When the fight started, Kael Duskrin moved faster than I anticipated," he began as he recalled those first seconds. "He hit me in the stomach with enough force to send me flying into the coliseum wall. I was embedded in it."

The quill began writing automatically on the parchment, transcribing every word with precision while Acelina listened attentively.

"When I recovered and returned to the field, we both charged at each other," Adam continued. "There was no defensive strategy from either of us. Just pure aggression. We exchanged blows constantly, with swords at first and then hand-to-hand when we dropped the weapons."

"At what point did you decide that the only way to win was to kill your opponent?" Acelina asked in a completely neutral tone, without judgment but clearly expecting an honest answer.

Adam did not hesitate. "When he had the same intention toward me. I could feel it in every strike he landed, in the way he fought. He wasn’t trying to incapacitate me or make me surrender. He was trying to kill me."

The quill continued writing as Acelina nodded slightly, as if that confirmed something she already knew.

"We both had severe injuries," Adam continued. "Fractured ribs, broken noses, missing teeth. Blood covered the ground beneath us. At some point, it stopped being an academy match and became a real fight for survival."

"And the final moment?" Acelina asked. "How exactly did it end?"

Adam kept his expression neutral as he recalled those last seconds. "Kael was on top of me, hitting me repeatedly. I knew that if I didn’t do something drastic, I was going to lose consciousness and probably die right there. So I used a dirty technique—I shoved my thumbs into his eyes to force him to pull back."

Acelina did not visibly react to that, simply continuing to listen.

"When he recoiled from the pain, I took the opportunity to reverse our positions and end up on top," Adam explained as his hands tightened slightly on the chair’s armrests at the memory. "I grabbed him by the throat with both hands and started squeezing while driving my knees into his already fractured ribs."

The quill continued moving across the parchment without stopping.

"He tried to resist at first, but eventually his strength began to fail," Adam commented in a tone that remained firmly neutral. "In his last conscious moments, he looked at me directly and smiled. He said ’good fight’ before he died."

There was silence in the office for several seconds after those words, broken only by the soft sound of the quill finishing the final lines.

Acelina looked at the parchment for a moment before turning her attention back to Adam with an expression that was difficult to interpret.

"And how do you feel about what happened?" she asked in a softer tone than before.

Adam considered the question honestly before answering. "I don’t feel proud of killing him, if that’s what you’re asking. But I don’t regret it either. I did what I had to do to survive in a situation where we both knew the risks from the start."

Acelina nodded slowly, as if that answer was exactly what she had expected to hear.

"Very well," she finally said as she began organizing the parchments. "That is all I need for now. The report will be sent to the Duskrin family along with a complete explanation of the circumstances of the match."

She paused before adding in a firmer tone, "However, I must warn you of something, Mr. Shadowend. Although you technically did not break any rules, what happened in that fight has generated... divided opinions among the student body and some of the faculty."

Adam said nothing, simply waiting for her to continue.

"Some see you as an exceptional combatant who simply did what was necessary to win," Acelina explained as she looked at him directly. "Others see you as someone dangerously violent who should not be in this institution. And still others are genuinely afraid of you."

"And you?" Adam asked. "What do you think?"

Acelina smiled faintly at the direct question. "I think you are a student with extraordinary potential who needs to learn better when to apply that violence and when to restrain it. But that will come with time and experience."

She stood up, signaling that the conversation was over.

"You may leave, Mr. Shadowend. Try not to cause any more... incidents during the rest of the academic year."

Adam rose from the chair, nodding once. "I will do my best."

"I hope so."

Adam left the office, closing the door softly behind him as he let out a long sigh he hadn’t realized he was holding.

’That went better than expected,’ he thought as he began walking down the now-empty hallways since classes had started several minutes earlier.

His footsteps echoed faintly against the floor as he headed toward where his elemental theory classroom should be with Professor Vane.

He was late, but considering he had just had a meeting with the director, they would probably give him a pass this time.

As he walked, his mind processed everything Acelina had said.

Divided opinions. Some afraid. Others thinking he was dangerously violent.

Honestly, none of those reactions surprised him.

What did surprise him was that the director herself seemed to be leaning toward giving him the benefit of the doubt instead of simply expelling him to avoid future problems.

’Interesting,’ he thought as he finally reached the classroom door where he could hear Professor Vane’s voice explaining something about elemental combustion theory.

He knocked softly on the door before opening it and stepping inside, mentally preparing himself for the looks he would surely receive from his classmates.

But that was something he would have to deal with eventually anyway.

Better to start now.
