Adam opened his eyes abruptly, and the first thing he noticed was the darkness that still ruled the room.
He instinctively turned his head toward one of the windows, but there wasn’t a trace of light filtering through the edges of the curtains, which meant it was still very early.
Too early, in fact.
He let out a slow sigh and ran a hand over his face, rubbing his eyes tiredly. However, as soon as his mind began to clear, the memories of the previous night flooded his head without warning.
Alice in his room with Nox in her hands. The Mana Oath. And then...
Adam clenched his teeth and rubbed his face harder, as if that could erase the images that replayed one after another in his memory.
’I was an idiot,’ he thought while staring at the ceiling. ’I took the whole Nox situation far too lightly.’
Because that was exactly what had happened. He had left the little dragon alone in the room without any kind of precaution, and as a result Alice had discovered him.
And although things had ended better than he expected, that didn’t change the fact that he had made a serious mistake.
A mistake that could have cost him dearly if the person who had walked in hadn’t been her.
Nevertheless, despite the irritation he felt toward himself, Adam also experienced a certain sense of relief.
Because Alice had formed a Mana Oath, which meant his secret was safe. At least for now. At least with her.
After several minutes of turning the matter over in his head, he decided there was no point in continuing to torture himself.
What was done was done, and the only thing he could do now was be more careful in the future.
So he pushed the sheets aside and sat up in bed with a low grunt. His bare feet touched the cold floor, and the contact finished waking him completely.
Then he stood up and walked slowly toward the bathroom, still dragging a bit of sleep with him.
Once in front of the sink, he opened the faucet and let the cold water fill his hands before splashing it onto his face.
The icy liquid hit his skin like a slap, but it was exactly what he needed to fully clear his head.
He looked at himself in the mirror for a moment, observing his own reflection as the droplets ran down his chin, and then he grabbed a towel to dry off.
That was when he noticed something in particular.
Nox hadn’t come out.
Adam frowned as he set the towel aside. Because every morning, without fail, the little dragon emerged from within him the moment he woke up.
It was a habit that had been established since the very first day of their contract. But today, for some reason, Nox remained silent.
’Is he upset about something?’ Adam wondered while putting on his training clothes.
The question hung in the air without an answer. And although part of him wanted to insist and call the dragon, another part decided it was better to leave him alone for the moment. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
After all, if Nox was angry about what he had witnessed the previous night, the last thing he needed was to pressure him.
So, with that thought in mind, Adam left his room and headed toward the academy grounds to begin his morning training.

The cool air of the early morning filled his lungs as his feet struck the ground in a steady rhythm.
The sky was still dark, although on the horizon the first shades of light were beginning to appear, announcing the coming sunrise.
Adam ran along the paths that surrounded the academy, passing by the silent gardens and the sleeping buildings, while his breathing remained controlled and his body gradually warmed up.
He jogged several kilometers without stopping, enjoying the solitude and silence that only the earliest hours of the day could offer.
There were not many early-rising students interrupting his routine, nor professors patrolling the grounds. Just him, the cold wind, and the sound of his own footsteps against the earth.
When he finally finished his route, the sun had already begun to peek over the academy walls.
Adam returned to his room covered in sweat, with his muscles warm and his mind clear.
He showered quickly, dressed in the appropriate uniform, and left again with just enough time to reach his first class.
However, the moment he stepped past the threshold of his door, he found a familiar figure waiting for him in the hallway.
Piers was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, although his usual posture seemed to lack its normal energy.
Adam observed him for a second, immediately noticing the dark circles beneath his eyes and the way he yawned without even bothering to cover his mouth.
"Good morning," Adam greeted while closing the door behind him.
"Good morning," Piers replied with a slightly hoarse voice, although the greeting sounded more like a complaint than anything else.
Adam raised an eyebrow.
"Did you not sleep at all last night or what happened to you?"
Piers glanced at him from the corner of his eye, and for a moment it seemed like he was going to answer with some neutral comment.
But then an ironic smile curved his lips, and his tone took on a clearly sarcastic edge.
"How was I supposed to sleep with two beasts on the other side of the wall?"
Adam remained silent. He said nothing, didn’t try to excuse himself or pretend he didn’t understand. He simply nodded, immediately grasping what Piers was referring to.
Because the room walls were not exactly thick. And the previous night, he and Alice had not exactly been discreet.
"Sorry about that," Adam finally said, starting to walk down the hallway toward the classrooms.
Piers pushed himself off the wall and followed him, although his irritated expression was beginning to soften.
"Don’t worry about it," he replied as he moved to walk beside him. "When I bring a woman to my room, you’ll have to put up with the same thing."
Adam let out a small laugh at the comment. And barely a second later, Piers laughed too, a short chuckle that echoed through the empty corridor.

When there were ten minutes left before the first class began, Adam and Piers were already at their usual spot.
It was a small space next to one of the columns in the main hallway, where they usually waited every morning for one particular person.
And they didn’t have to wait long, because only a few minutes later a familiar figure appeared at the end of the corridor.
Evelyne walked toward them with a radiant smile, her hair moving slightly with each step.
As soon as she was close enough, she raised a hand to greet them with the same enthusiasm as always.
"Good morning!" she exclaimed as she stopped in front of them.
"Good morning," Adam and Piers replied almost in unison.
Evelyne tilted her head to one side, observing them with curiosity. Because although both had answered normally, there was something different about them today. Something that did not go unnoticed by her.
"Why do you both look so happy?" she asked while looking at them alternately. "Did something happen?"
Piers shook his head, although the smile that had appeared during their earlier conversation had not completely disappeared from his face.
"It’s nothing important," he replied casually.
But Evelyne did not seem convinced. Her eyes shone with interest as she leaned slightly forward, as if trying to decipher a secret they were refusing to reveal.
"Is it about Alice?" she asked suddenly. "Did something happen with her?"
Adam felt his body tense almost imperceptibly. Because the last thing he wanted was to talk about Alice with Evelyne present.
Not when things between him and the former were so complicated, and not when the latter still looked at him with interest, something that always made him uncomfortable.
"No," he replied quickly, perhaps a bit too quickly. "We were just laughing about something stupid we said. That’s all."
Evelyne observed him for a moment, as if trying to determine whether he was telling the truth or not.
But in the end she seemed to decide it wasn’t worth insisting, so she simply shrugged and let the subject drop.
"Alright," she said with a smile. "If you say so."
And with that, the three of them began walking through the corridors, waiting for the first class of the day.

The rest of the day passed normally.
Very normally.
Classes followed one after another without any kind of incident. The professors explained their lessons, the students took notes, and time passed in a calm and predictable way.
Adam attended each of his subjects with the same attitude as always, paying attention when necessary and letting his mind wander when it wasn’t.
He had lunch with Piers and Evelyne in the academy cafeteria, exchanging trivial comments about classes and the rumors circulating among the students.
Then he continued with the rest of his schedule, moving from one classroom to another as the hours passed unhurriedly.
It wasn’t until near the end of the day, when the sun was beginning to descend on the horizon and the shadows stretched across the academy corridors, that Adam noticed something strange.
Alice hadn’t bothered him all day.
He stopped in the middle of the corridor, frowning as he mentally reviewed the events of the day.
Because now that he thought about it, not only had she not bothered him, he hadn’t even seen her.
Not in the hallways, nor in the cafeteria. It was as if she had completely vanished.
However, after considering it for a few seconds, Adam decided not to give it too much importance.
Because knowing Alice, the most likely explanation was that she was busy with some personal matter or with one of the many obligations from her classes.
’She’ll probably show up tomorrow,’ he thought as he resumed his walk toward his room. ’With that annoying smile of hers.’
And with that thought, he set the matter aside and continued with his routine.
