Chapter 111: Chapter 111: Scheme 2

"Call Wendy King. Tell her to come to Room 704 at The Borealis Hotel. Let her know Charles King is here, drunk, and that you need her help. I don’t need to spell out the rest, do I?"

Carla King laughed. "You want to make it look like Charles is cheating on me with Wendy?"

Mrs. King laughed too. "What a great plan! Miss Linton, you’re a genius! We get what we want, and that bitch Wendy King’s reputation will be ruined. Carla, call her! Call her right now!"

Carla King agreed and made the call.

Annabelle Linton saw the look of utter adoration on Mrs. King’s face and offered a faint smile in return.

Mrs. King sighed with admiration. "Dear, I like you so much. How about I make you my goddaughter? Don’t mind me if I seem a bit slow—I’m a very loyal person. If anyone ever bullies you, I’ll stand up for you."

Since she was a little girl, Annabelle Linton had always wished for a mother who would be there to protect her when she needed it.

Mrs. King’s words touched a soft spot in her heart.

Annabelle Linton gave a genuine smile. "There’s no need to be my godmother, but how about I call you Auntie from now on?"

"That works too. As long as we’re friends, that’s what matters."

The call connected, and Wendy King’s sweet voice came through, calling Carla "cousin." Annabelle Linton saw Mrs. King roll her eyes.

Carla King kept her expression neutral, but her voice was laced with urgency. "Wendy, are you free right now?"

"I am. What’s wrong, cousin?"

"It’s your brother-in-law. He’s drunk at a hotel. We had a fight, and I’m afraid he’ll do something rash in his anger. Can you go keep an eye on him for me? I’m stuck at work and can’t get away. I don’t trust anyone else, so I have to ask you."

Wendy hesitated on the other end. "Cousin, is that really appropriate? He’s my brother-in-law. It doesn’t seem right for me to be watching over him while he’s drunk, does it?"

"What’s not appropriate about it? I know what kind of person you are. I trust you. Please, just go check on him for me. If something happens to him, I don’t know what I’ll do. My dad is in the hospital right now, and our whole family is depending on him."

There was a pause as Wendy seemed to consider it. "Alright, cousin. I’ll head over right now. I’ll make sure your husband is okay, you can count on me."

Carla King sneered inwardly but spoke with gratitude. "Thank you, Wendy. If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t know who else to trust. Your brother-in-law is in Room 704 at The Borealis Grand Hotel. I know the owner, so I’ve already called ahead. Just give them my name when you arrive, and an employee will show you to the room."

"Okay, I’m on my way."

"Great. I really owe you one for this. I’ll treat you to dinner some other time."

"It’s no problem. We’re family; you don’t have to say that. I’m going to hang up now." 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

"Okay."

Carla King put her phone away and turned to the other two. "It’s done."

Mrs. King was ecstatic. "Perfect! As soon as she gets there, we’ll catch them in the act! I’m getting excited just thinking about it! No, wait, this isn’t enough. Carla, hold on. Mom’s going to call my reporter contacts in the entertainment circle. I’ll go with you later.

"That little bitch Wendy King dares to bully you? I was the one who made her famous in the first place, and now I’m going to be the one to bring her down!"

After her tirade, she looked back at Annabelle Linton and asked, "Annabelle, do you think that’s a good idea? Or will I just be making a mess of things?"

Annabelle Linton picked up an iPad to order some food, then passed another one to Carla King. Without looking up, she said, "Only if you’re feeling sentimental."
