Chapter 111: Chapter 111: He Has Always Slept in Her Room

As Vera Sheridan walked along the path, she heard Ian Kane’s resolute, self-destructive declaration clearly.

If she doesn’t turn back, he will never let her and Noah Grant have peace.

In truth, her feelings for Noah Grant remained as a vague fondness; she never envisioned any future with him.

After experiencing this failed marriage, she hardly held any illusions about marriage itself.

But, she absolutely could not involve him!

"Ian." Vera’s voice carried clearly through the night, landing in his ear, "I agree with you."

Ian Kane was taken aback, startled!

In an instant, his dark eyes surged with an unbelievable shock, as he was pinned to the spot by her sudden reversal.

Vera maintained a blank expression, staring into the swirling doubt in his eyes, speaking each word coldly as frost:

"I agree with you, I’ll withdraw the divorce lawsuit and reconcile."

Ian Kane’s heart suddenly sank!

Grinding his teeth, his chest was instantly filled with a surge of overwhelming joy, little sparks bursting in his dark eyes—she had finally agreed to return!

However—

This joy lasted only for a fleeting moment.

Recalling the reasons behind "reconciliation," it was all for Noah Grant.

It was as if a bucket of ice water was poured over his head, instantly extinguishing the light in his eyes, leaving only a chilling cold and bitterness.

The man’s Adam’s apple moved difficultly, and his lips curled into a cold self-deprecating smile.

He gripped his phone tightly, his knuckles turning white, instructing Jasper Crowe on the other end coldly:

"Don’t send the stuff."

On the other end, Jasper Crowe let out a long, silent sigh.

Ian Kane decisively hung up.

Vera had already walked straight to the Phantom by the roadside, opened the car door, and got inside.

After sitting down, she crossed her arms over her chest, closed her eyes, and said in a voice infused with weary detachment, "Find a hotel, drop me off."

Ian Kane’s eyes flickered slightly, instantly understanding.

She didn’t want to return to the Grant Family Estate.

It seemed that Rosalind Morgan had "pressured" her before.

He turned his head, his gaze lingering heavily on her tired profile with tightly closed eyes, as a complex emotion churned in his chest.

"Heh." A light snort escaped from his nose.

"Vera." His voice was deep, like sandpaper scraping against a rough stone surface, "Seven years ago, even if I hadn’t come between you and Noah Grant—"

He paused, his gaze sharply capturing any subtle reactions that might appear on her face, his lips curling into a mocking smile:

"Do you think the Grant Family would have allowed you to date Noah Grant?"

With her eyes closed, Vera’s thick eyelashes trembled slightly, ignoring his words.

Under the car’s overhead light, Ian Kane watched her unwaveringly.

Her profile was tense, fatigue etched between her brows.

He tightened his face, silently adjusting her seat to recline slowly, then grabbed a soft blanket beside him, and with a bit of force as if venting, tossed it onto her—not gently.

"Go home." He instructed the driver, his tone leaving no room for dispute.

Vera suddenly opened her eyes, a flash of obvious displeasure evident in her gaze.

She didn’t want to return to that "home" again!

Ian Kane’s eyelids lifted slightly, catching the resistance in her eyes, he let out a cold snort:

"What? You agreed to come back, yet you won’t even go ’home’?"

Vera couldn’t be bothered to argue with him, pursed her lips tightly, and turned her head fully towards the other car window, closing her eyes again, as if falling into a deep sleep.

The car descended into a suffocating silence.

With her eyes closed, Vera’s heart was clear.

This withdrawal and reconciliation, in exchange for the destruction of the photos, was merely a temporary solution.

Next time, she would continue to file for divorce; accuse him of maliciously depriving her of the right to treat her foot, bribing the doctors, leading to her disability.

Right now, thinking that there was still hope for her foot to recover, a burning warm stream surged up her throat... two hot tears silently rolled down her cheeks.

...

Late at night, the Phantom drove into the wealthy district.

She got out of the car, entered the house, and went upstairs.

Vera’s actions were like a marionette pulled by invisible strings, each step landing on nothingness.

Toward this place she once viewed as "home," her heart couldn’t stir even the slightest ripple, only a profound numbness remained.

She didn’t glance at the layout of the living room on the first floor which she had once meticulously arranged, instead stepping directly onto the spiral staircase, heading towards her former bedroom on the second floor.

Pushing the door open, a strong and familiar scent hit her nostrils.

The scent of cedar mixed with a cold undertone, it was Ian Kane’s smell.

Vera frowned, looking at a pillow on the bed that belonged to him.

On the dressing table, there was his usual aftershave and watch box.

The walk-in closet had its door open, filled with his suits and shirts hanging inside.

So, after she left, he had been sleeping in her room all along.

On the nightstand, a deep blue velvet jewelry box lay quietly with a large diamond ring inside.

Vera recognized it instantly as her wedding ring.

The one she sold without hesitation after discovering his infidelity, when her heart turned cold as ashes.

He had actually... redeemed it.

With a "snap," Vera closed the box and tossed it aside with disgust.

In an instant, she stripped the bed of its sheets and took new ones from the wardrobe to replace them.

After she finished tidying up, the door was gently pushed open.

Ian Kane stood at the entrance, holding a steaming dark wooden basin, a clean white towel draped over its edge.

In one glance, he saw the discarded heap of his bedding on the floor and the completely refreshed white sheets on the bed.

The man’s deep eyes fleetingly showed a complex dark glimmer.

There was the sting of rejection, a knowing acceptance of the inevitable, and even a faint, almost imperceptible... embarrassment.

He entered quietly, placing the wooden basin on the soft carpet beside the bed.

The steam from the hot water spread between them, introducing a warmth at odds with the cold atmosphere.

"Sit." His voice was low, devoid of emotion, his gaze settling on her feet in slippers.

It was as if they had returned to the past, where he would personally soak her feet each night.

As he spoke, he bent down, reaching to touch her ankle and remove her shoe.

Just as his fingertips were about to brush her skin—

"Don’t touch me!"

Vera coldly reprimanded, stepping back to avoid his touch, her sharp eyes piercing him with icy detachment and disgust.

Ian Kane’s outstretched hand froze in mid-air.

"Leave." Vera commanded coldly.

Ian Kane straightened up slowly, his tall figure casting a somber shadow under the light, covering the wooden basin by the bed still steaming.

His jawline was taut, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly, "Vera, don’t be ungrateful."

Vera let out a cold snort, "Ian Kane, you know why I came back, now, leave!"

As her words fell, she didn’t spare him another glance as if he were just an eyesore in the room, walking around him directly towards the bathroom.

With a "bang," the bathroom door closed behind her, the sound of the lock clicking sharp and resolute.

Ian Kane remained standing there, maintaining the posture of being rejected, his gaze heavy on the tightly shut door.

After a while, he lifted his foot and kicked over the basin of hot water.

...

When Vera came out, Ian Kane’s presence was gone from the bedroom.

She walked to the door, locked it from the inside, and then laboriously pushed a heavy nightstand over, firmly blocking the door.

She didn’t know how much time had passed when she was woken by the faint vibration of the phone alarm under her pillow.

Silence blanketed everything, the night thick with darkness.

She quietly got up, moving like a soundless shadow slipping out of the room, stealthily heading to the study on the third floor.

She remembered that every record of Ian Kane taking her for treatment was stored in the safe in the study.
