'Did I get tricked? Their king doesn't look like a dishonest type of person.'

Watching Alexander's expression change, Samuel could guess what he was thinking. He quickly reassured the diplomat, "Sir Lucas, let me clarify a certain fact for you."

"Go on."

"Ryntum had no intention of participating in this war. Therefore, please calm down and listen to what I will say first."

Alexander Lucas didn't say anything. His silence acts as a signal for Samuel to continue with the explanation.

"The Kingdom of Inver has asked for our help. They wished for Ryntum to side with them and help them defeat you. However, our king disagrees. Instead, he wants this war to stop and sends me as a mediator."

"I see," Alexander nods. He was pleased to know Ryntum's stance in this matter. "Certainly this war has been going on for too long. Don't look at our vast number and think we're fine. We are also experiencing substantial pressure on our end."

"It is nice to see you're on board with this idea," Samuel remarked.

"So, how do you suggest?" Alexander asked.

"I suggest both sides to stop fighting immediately and retreat from the front line," Samuel proposed.

Alexander pursed his lips, contemplating the suggestion. Then, he shook his head. "I'm afraid I can't agree with that."

"Could you tell me why?" Samuel asked.

He thought he could rely on Ryntum's name to give some sort of intimidation and cause them to be more inclined with his arrangement. But it didn't turn out to be as he expected.

Perhaps he underestimates Inverloch's determination too much?

On the other side, Alexander begins to explain in earnestly. He knows there's nothing good would come out if he was misunderstood by Samuel.

He's not a fool. Ryntum comes and meets Inver's side first instead of them.

It shows where Ryntum's stance initially leaned to. They probably had some talk before coming here.

Inverloch was lucky that Samuel didn't talk with its commanders. Alexander couldn't imagine how the situation would turn out to be. Those people tend to be arrogant and prideful when talking.

"Sir Mayor, like this... Larkish originally belonged to us. The main objective we initiating this war is to take it back. Although we suffered a lot, we can't simply let go of this city to Inver. The city means too much to us. I hope you understand."

"Hmm...Don't worry, I understand." Samuel inwardly was relieved.

Based on Alexander's words, the latter had no intention to advance beyond Larkish. His assumption may be inaccurate. He needs to confirm it.

"How about both Inver and Inverloch return to the original border you both used for decades?" Samuel suggests.

"That would be the best outcome for this war." Alexander quickly gave his approval. But, there's one variable factor remaining. "Will the Inver agree with it?"

"Don't worry, they will. Leave it to me."

"Then, I will wait for your good news."

Samuel stands up from his seat and leaves Inverloch's camp.

The talk with Inverloch is going well. Now it's turn to talk to the Inver.

....

Inside the city of Larkish, Samuel went straight to King Isaac after inquiring about his whereabouts.

Just as he expected, the King of Inver was anxiously waiting for Samuel's return.

"I greet King Isaac of Inver," Samuel began with the customary formalities. The other side is still a king after all.

However, Isaac was impatient. He has no time to hear any inconsequential remarks. "Enough with the greeting, Mayor Samuel. How's your talk with Inverloch progressing? What did they say?"

"Your Majesty Isaac, they agree to stop this war," Samuel revealed.

Before he could finish his sentence, a wave of joy swept through the room. Smiles emerged on the faces of those present.

Ignoring their joyful atmosphere, Samuel continues. "The only condition they had was for both countries to return to their respective original borders. Meaning that Inver has to let go of the city of Larkish."

As if Samuel had poured cold water on them during their sleep, the joyous atmosphere cooled down drastically.

From the expression they showed, Samuel sighed.

He's going to have a tough time convincing them. Or perhaps not?

'Let's see what they are going to say first.'

"Mayor Samuel, I can't agree with this condition. Our soldiers have shed blood to defend this city. To let go of this city is as same as ignoring the sacrifice they made. In the first place, we sent a letter to you to ask your help in defending the city."

King Isaac disagreed as Samuel had expected.

"His Majesty is right." Duke Yolger added.

"I know but Ryntum do not want to and we had no obligation to do so. Don't tell me you think that we will help just because you asked right?" Samuel smiled but it didn't look kind at all.

"..."

He looks at their expression before continuing.

"You did a good job of creating a sense of crisis in your letter. Even my king applauds you for that. But it's not enough to make us panic. Now, would you like to follow our arrangement?"

"What if we don't?" Martin Midvier who was silent all this time spoke. He feels that King Issac had made a mistake in inviting Ryntum.

Samuel gives a clear answer. "We will help Inverloch in capturing this city and then enforce our term. Whether you like it or not, the outcome has been decided. I'm informing you due to my respect as your neighbour. Ryntum doesn't want the situation to be nasty and awkward between two countries."

King Isaac clenched his fist. The mayor in front of him talks about capturing his city in such a light tone. Does he think Inver can no longer turn the table around?

Silence befell the room. Samuel didn't say anything else afterwards and patiently waited for Isaac to make his decision.

Inver is already at a dead end.

After a few minutes passed, Isaac finally stated his decision. "Fine. Let's go with your arrangement."
