Restart:Untalented Man-Chapter 443: Smooth Transfer
Samuel approached Larkish. He found the city gate wide open, almost as if it were inviting him inside.
The city looks as busy as before. Its streets were alive with movement, yet there was a sense of urgency as people hurriedly packed their belongings. Only the original inhabitants of the city appeared somewhat relaxed.
Even so, there was an undeniable sense of anxiety lingering among them. Some decided that it was better to leave this city and start a new life.
These people fear that Inverloch may unleash their wrath on them once the city changes its ownership. Regardless of whatever reason they had, it is undeniably true that they have unwittingly aided Inver in their fight against Inverloch.
Inverloch's forces can easily brand them as a spy left by the enemy and use that justification to end their life. It was as simple as that.
Samuel proceeded directly to King Isaac's location, where the king anxiously awaited news of the peace treaty's conclusion.
As he entered, the tension in the room was perceivable.
Upon seeing Samuel's arrival, King Isaac wasted no time in getting to the heart of the matter. "Did they sign it?"
With a confident nod, Samuel held up the signed treaty for all to see. "Rest assured, Your Majesty. They did."
For King Isaac, the news brought a mix of emotions.
Relief washed over him, knowing that the imminent threat had been averted. Yet, there was also a sense of helplessness as he had to leave this matter in the hands of Ryntum to solve it. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
There's no doubt that this incident blew his pride. Not to mention it damaged his reputation severely.
It cast him in a less favourable light in the eyes of his own courtiers and subjects. The thought of appearing inferior in the presence of foreign dignitaries was a bitter pill to swallow, one that no monarch relished.
Still, this is better than offending Ryntum and making one more enemy. Maintaining good relations with powerful friends like Ryntum was important.
"Thank you for your hard work, Sir Samuel. I'm really ashamed of my weakness," King Isaac expressed. His voice tinged with regret and gratitude.
Samuel offered a reassuring smile. "It's fine. Don't blame yourself too much. Ryntum also benefited from this incident. More importantly, you should hurry and retreat from this city. Inverloch only gives you a few days to do so."
King Isaac nodded solemnly, "Don't worry, we already started evacuating the city."
"That's good to hear. Just so you know, I will stay behind to ensure your safety. So don't worry about the possibility of being attacked from behind."
"You doing us a favour again, Sir Samuel."
"It's not much of a work. Don't feel burdened by it."
King Isaac and his entourage departed from the city with haste. A sense of emptiness quickly descended upon Larkish. The streets that were once filled with people and activities now lay eerily quiet.
Only a few remaining souls are scattered throughout the city.
As the dust settled and the last echoes of departing footsteps faded into the distance, Mayor Samuel assumed an unexpected role – that of the de facto ruler in Larkish.
It's not a particularly challenging post and only for a short while. In fact, he found out that governing this city is much simpler than governing the province.
With fewer people in the city, this unpaid job was a breeze. All he had do to was make sure that the city didn't descend into chaos.
....
A few days later, the gate of Larkish was open. Samuel stood alone, gazing at the east direction. The cold morning weather doesn't seem to disturb his focus.
Before long, the dust scattered. Accompanied it was a thunderous sound footsteps.
A large army gradually appears from the horizon.
"Impressive," Samuel muttered softly to himself.
Their number was not an exaggeration. Inverloch had truly used its own population to its full advantage.
Simultaneously, his respect for the Kingdom of Inver soar. To think that Inver had held their ground against such a formidable enemy without any clear advantages was nothing short of commendable.
It spoke volumes of their resilience and tenacity.
Facing such a huge army, Samuel's face did not show the slightest fear. He simply stood there confidently, believing that this army wouldn't do anything to him.
As the army drew closer, Samuel could discern the figure of Alexander breaking away from the ranks and making his way towards him.
With a nod, Samuel greeted him as he approached.
"Good morning, Sir Lucas."
"Good morning, Mayor Samuel. I didn't know you were still here," said Alex. A surprise colouring his tone.
Samuel offered a reassuring smile. "Don't worry too much about my presence. I'm here to ensure that both sides abide by the treaty."
Alexander frowns for a second before quickly recovering his composure. This mayor obviously didn't trust him.
"That is very kind of you, Mayor Samuel. It must be tough for you."
"Not at all, Sir Lucas," Samuel responded with a slight inclination of his head. "Please, go ahead and enter the city."
Led by Alexander Lucas, the Inverloch army proceeded to step inside the city.
Alexander couldn't help but notice the scarcity of people within the city walls. It seemed incongruent with the size of Larkish.
"Why are there so few people?"
"Many have decided to start a new life in a different place," Samuel said as his gaze swept over the city.
After personally overseeing the entrance of the Inverloch army into the city, Samuel felt that his job was completed.
The fact that Inverloch's army doesn't show any intention to encroach further westward puts his mind at ease.
His task was officially done and there was no reason for him to remain in Larkish any longer.
Samuel bid farewell to Alexander and withdrew his troops from the city, leaving it completely in the hands of Inverloch. He can finally return home.
Whatever Inverloch does to the city next is none of his business.
