Restart:Untalented Man-Chapter 508: Decision
Hugo woke up the morning after his unsettling meeting with the king thanks to the sunlight shining softly through the curtains of his hotel room.
For once, he had not risen with the dawn.
Laying on the bed, he stares blankly at the ceiling and recalls his discussion with the king yesterday.
It's weighing a lot on his mind.
Despite his resolve to let others bear the brunt in his stead, his heart is unwilling to do it.
Those people are none other than his friends, albeit not so close.
But what other choice did he have?
Hugo repeatedly convinces himself that his decision is necessary.
If he didn't sacrifice others, he'll be sacrificed.
Sigh-
Not wanting to ruin his morning, Hugo stopped thinking about this problem and got out of his bed.
He walked to the window and pulled aside the curtain to let more light in.
The street was already bustling with activities.
Hugo turned away. He headed toward the small table where a basin of water was and splashed the cool liquid on his face.
Hugo decided to postpone taking a bath first since he was hungry.
Moreover, there are probably a lot of guests waiting in turn to use the shower room. Before, he could use the room leisurely because he woke up earlier than everybody else.
Let's go down to the tavern below first.
To his surprise, it was still lively but not as crowded as he initially thought.
He spotted an unoccupied table tucked in a corner and quickly claimed it.
A waiter approached, and Hugo ordered a modest breakfast of bread, eggs, and tea.
The food here is good and his room was comfortable.
The only downside is that food had to be paid separately despite the high price of the stay.
When his breakfast arrived, Hugo tore the soft bread into small, biteable pieces.
The texture was incredible. It's soft, light and airy, far better than the loaves he was used to in Blande.
He can't believe such soft bread exists.
While eating, he eavesdropped the conversation around him.
Being in this kind of place, he can't help but do so. Tavern, after all, is a hub of information.
Although there's a newspaper available for everyone to buy, its content still lags behind words spread by people.
People can spread anything without considering their authenticity as long as it is interesting.
The content in newspapers, on the other hand, must be verified before it can be printed. Otherwise, their reputation and trustworthiness will suffer.
"It's true! I heard it from my cousin's cousin's aunt who works in the building. There's an execution today!"
"Then why is there no announcement informing us? This is a big deal."
"How do I know? Why don't we go and take a look at the plaza today?"
"Alright!"
The sound of chairs scraping against the floor followed. Two people stood up, clearly preparing to leave and check it themselves.
Hugo's hand froze midway to his mouth.
Out of all the snippets of conversation he hears, this one caught his attention the most.
It made Hugo frown.
The word 'execution' is not what he expected to hear on this lovely morning.
This issue seems to appear out of nowhere.
'Could this be related to my negotiations yesterday?'
He shook his head. No, that is impossible.
He tried to catch more of the conversation, but they were gone.
Hugo becomes curious about this incomplete rumour. So he quickly finished his breakfast.
He needs to check it out himself. He needed to know what is about to happen today.
Hugo made his way back upstairs, prepared a change of clothes, and waited for his turn in the shower room.
It turned out to be a longer wait than he'd anticipated. The inn's shower rooms were in high demand.
By the time he departed, it was already around eleven and a half in the morning. He wasted a lot of time waiting for his turn to take a bath.
Just before departing, he has a little conversation with the receptionist.
"You might want to consider expanding the shower room in the future," he said with a smile that did not quite reach his eyes. "It's ridiculous to keep guests waiting this long."
The receptionist nodded and said something about forwarding the suggestion to management.
After walking for a few minutes, he started to see people crowded at the gate of the government building.
They all look curious but no one dares to enter.
Although the guards didn't disperse the crowd, they didn't open the gate either.
As such, they can only watch in silence and wonder if the rumours are true.
Hugo slowed his pace, blending with the crowd.
Nobody knows the time for execution. Everyone must wait.
Those who were impatient lost their interest and left.
For those who patiently waited until noon, their curiosity was fulfilled.
"Look! Is that it? They're bringing him out!"
Hugo craned his neck.
Slowly, the figure at the centre of everyone's attention came into view.
"So, there is an execution..."
Whether this is a coincidence or the king cleverly arranged it to take place during his stay, Hugo is unsure.
Needless to say, when the head rolled to the ground, his stomach churned violently.
He thought he might lose the breakfast he'd eaten earlier.
He gritted his teeth and tightly closed his mouth, forcing himself to remain composed.
Even though the criminal had nothing to do with Hugo, he felt a sense of foreboding. Like someone is giving him a warning indirectly.
Hugo stood there. His gaze fixed on the lifeless body.
At that moment, he no longer waver. He had made his choice.
The face of the person Hugo was going to sacrifice surfaced in his mind.
For the sake of his own family, this betrayal was necessary.
'I'm sorry, Van. You need to take this loss for us.'
Hugo returned to his hotel to write his proposal.
Six days remained until their next meeting.
