Chapter 219: Chapter 219: Hereditary Without Deceit, Yet Not Nobility

"Tell me, what happened here?" The police team leader arrived and couldn’t help but be startled by the scene.

Dragon Country’s notorious assassin, Shasheng, lay dead. Nearby, a group of hoodlums were crawling on the ground, transformed into dogs, pigs, and cows. Some even believed they were snakes and were slithering back and forth.

Xiang Wan, an elite police team leader dispatched from Dragon Country, had seen her share of bizarre cases, but none were more surreal than what she witnessed tonight. The moment she saw the looks on the townspeople’s faces, she could tell they knew something. She approached them to ask what had happened, but not a single person would tell her. Instead, they all turned the questions back on the police.

"Do you have any idea what these people have done?"

"Do you know what we’ve been through these past few days?"

The more the townspeople spoke, the more filled with righteous indignation they became. If it weren’t for that person, the police might never have come. Would they have been trapped here for the rest of their lives?

After listening to them, Xiang Wan had a general understanding of the situation. She came from a family of law enforcement, after all. Nearly all her ancestors had been police officers. Her great-great-grandfather, the first generation, had been the chief of the patrol house. After him, her entire family had joined the police force. She was originally an elite officer in Longjing, but she was transferred here after reprimanding the son of a prominent family. She had thought her life here would be quiet and uneventful, only to stumble upon such an incredible incident.

Xiang Wan scanned the crowd, her voice robust and energetic—a stark contrast to the gentleness typically associated with women. "All personnel, on my command!" she commanded loudly.

"Team Leader, we await your orders," her subordinates said, stepping forward.

Xiang Wan nodded. "Take these scoundrels who’ve been turned into pigs and dogs to jail. Deal with Shasheng’s body. After that, we disband."

This statement left all her subordinates perplexed. There’s no need to ask further? They could all tell that none of the locals were saying what had actually happened here, only what they themselves had suffered. Their evasion was obvious; something was clearly amiss.

Xiang Wan glared at them coldly, and they all immediately fell silent. In the month she had been in Peng City, she had whipped the male officers into shape, getting them to follow her orders without question. She had already solved numerous cases.

Xiang Wan led her team away.

The townspeople breathed a collective sigh of relief.

At that moment, one of the junior officers, still puzzled by Xiang Wan’s actions, asked again.

Seeing that only her team remained, Xiang Wan said, "Can’t you see? The townspeople are all protecting that person, which means what he did was, at the very least, an act of chivalry."

She continued, "If we push any further, I guarantee some of them would rather die than talk. You can see it in their eyes."

The junior officers all nodded, feeling Xiang Wan had made a good point. But are we really letting the matter go? We all feel that isn’t in her character.

"I won’t give up," Xiang Wan suddenly declared, energizing her subordinates. They had joined the police force to chase their dreams but had spent the last few years in a daze. Though Xiang Wan was a woman, her arrival had given them new hope.

"Investigate any formidable individuals who have recently arrived in Peng City. Every one of them is a potential target."

"Yes, ma’am!" the officers responded in unison.

Xiang Wan already had a lead in mind: the Cui Family’s party tomorrow night. She believed there was a fifty-percent chance she would find her target there. Even if the person was a vigilante, they had broken the city’s laws, and she would have to arrest them. A spirited determination burned in her bright eyes; she had never encountered such a thrilling case. The suspect, it seemed, was one of those people from the Martial Arts World her family had told her about.

「On the darkened streets.」

Wu Tian, Qin Yuhan, and Xia Qian were walking, with the little one nestled in Xia Qian’s arms. Why was Xia Qian holding him? Because the little one wanted to try something new.

"Let’s not return to the hotel just yet. There’s another matter I want to deal with," Xia Qian suddenly said. She hoped Wu Tian would accompany her, because she was afraid; the night could be frightening for a woman alone. She also felt the situation with the herbs was taking an unusual turn.

Upon hearing this, Wu Tian smiled. "I’ll accompany you."

"Oh?" Xia Qian was surprised. "Aren’t you afraid Yuhan will get jealous?"

Wu Tian looked over at Qin Yuhan.

Qin Yuhan smiled back. "I’m not so petty. Besides, I’ll be right there with you. With me around, you two won’t get a chance to be alone."

It was a statement brimming with dominance.

Xia Qian chuckled, then took out her phone and dialed the number her employee had given her. A moment later, the call connected.

"Is this Uncle Lan? I’m Xia Qian from the herb company."

"Yes, yes, that’s me!" the elder on the other end immediately replied. "Are you out of herbs? Don’t worry, I still have more here."

"The last batch was destroyed," Xia Qian explained. "I’d like to come and pick up this batch in person. Would that be convenient?"

The old man on the other end chuckled. "It’s no inconvenience at all. I’m not a bad fellow. As it happens, my son and daughter-in-law are visiting, so just come on over."

Xia Qian nodded and immediately called a car, heading to Lan Zhengxiong’s Herbal Manor with Wu Tian and the others. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

「Herbal Manor.」

This was a place known only to a few major pharmacies. When they ran short on herbs, they would come here to make a purchase. The Herbal Manor had no flowers, only medicinal herbs. The air was tinged with an array of distinct herbal fragrances.

Lan Zhengxiong was busy packing the herbs Xia Qian needed so he could give them to her directly upon her arrival. Still, he felt something was amiss. The last batch, handed over to an employee of the herb company, had been destroyed. This implied the company had enemies. Will those enemies come looking for me here?

Lan Zhengxiong’s brow furrowed, but he quickly relaxed. "Son, Daughter-in-law," he said, "if someone comes looking for trouble later, I’ll need you two to take action."

Next to him stood a middle-aged couple.

The woman nodded. "Oh, it’s been a long time since I’ve had a good fight. If anyone comes looking for trouble, I’ll give them a good thrashing."

The middle-aged man remained silent, but he ran a hand over the large bow he was holding, his eyes brimming with confidence. His intentions were clear without a word.

Just then, the sound of many footsteps, dense and quick, began advancing toward the Herbal Manor.
