Side Story Chapter 67

โ€œA-Are you really the Martial God?โ€ Archbishop Grimman asked, much more politely than before. The fact that he was older than Joshua didnโ€™t matter right now. Joshua was the emperor and a hero famed across the continent. In fact, Joshua was called Hero King, meaning he was the hero of heroes.

โ€œCanโ€™t you tell?โ€

โ€œB-But itโ€™s said that His Majesty Joshua Sanders has already dieโ€ฆโ€ Grimman closed his mouth and stopped talking.

Joshua narrowed his eyes. โ€œOther countries think Iโ€™m dead, huh?โ€

โ€œCough, cough. Excuse me. You were away from your throne for too long. โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine. Well, yeah. How else could Hermons have thought to play gangster in my country if they knew I was here?โ€

Grimman frowned; โ€˜Hermonโ€™ was the derogatory term for Hermesโ€™s priests. The โ€˜-monโ€™ in Hermon came from โ€˜monsterโ€™, which meant that they were Hermesโ€™s pet monsters.

โ€œโ€ฆOf course, that doesnโ€™t completely answer my question.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€ Joshua tilted his head.

โ€œAmong the evil demons, some of them are capable of copying a personโ€™s appearance. So could it beโ€ฆ?โ€

Before Grimman could finish speaking, sharp icicles were created in the air, surrounding the paladins. It was at least a Class 5 magic spell, but even more threateningly. none of them heard the mage chanting.

โ€œTh-This is a very high magic spellโ€ฆ!โ€

โ€œAn ice mage in Avalon that is at least of the sixth circleโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWaitโ€ฆโ€

Iceline took off her hood. As her robe fluttered down, her beautiful appearance and ice-blue eyes were revealed. The paladins and priests gasped.

โ€œI-I knew itโ€ฆ!โ€

โ€œIโ€™m already annoyed because you people are interrupting my picnic with my wives. Itโ€™s been a long time since I did this, but you want to treat me as the Demon Spiritโ€™s minion?โ€ Joshua asked, frowning.

Grimmanโ€™s hands trembled faintly. Things were turning bad. The mage was obviously Iceline Sanders, the First Queen Consort of the Avalon Empire.

Obviously, Grimman wasnโ€™t concerned about this incident turning into an international issue because that was exactly what the Hubalt Empire wanted. Avalon was a tiger without fangsโ€”but it became a different story if those fangs grew back.

โ€œI see the Hermons got pretty big-headed while I was away,โ€ Joshua remarked, cracking his knuckles.

โ€œWa-Wait!โ€ Grimman hastily shouted, having run out of options.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œTh-There is no way humans can use demonic power unless theyโ€™re demons! Iโ€™m an archbishop of the Hermes Templeโ€”my concern is for the sake of the continent, so I beg you for your understanding, Your Majesty!โ€

Joshua raised an eyebrow. โ€œYou havenโ€™t heard that I can use demonic power?โ€

โ€œI-I have, but I heard that very long agoโ€ฆ And although Iโ€™ve lived for a long time, I never met someone who could use demonic power in person.โ€

A grin spread on Joshuaโ€™s face. It was pretty annoying to see Grimman trying to nitpick everything Joshua said, but he decided to play along this time. freewe(b)novel.c(o)m

โ€œThen watch and see for yourself.โ€

โ€œPardonโ€ฆ?โ€

A black mass floated above Joshuaโ€™s head and then moved to his right hand.

โ€œMy demonic power in one hand,โ€ he began.

And before Grimman could respond, a fist-sized white mass popped up on top of Joshuaโ€™s left palm.

โ€œD-Divine power!โ€ the archbishop shouted. Given his position, he recognized it immediately.

โ€œMy divine power in my other hand,โ€ Joshua finished.

โ€œH-How is this possibleโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a priest, but I can use divine power. So I think the fact that I can use demonic power isnโ€™t very surprising.โ€ Joshua shrugged and then grabbed one of the icicles from the air and pointed the tip at Grimmanโ€™s neck. The archbishopโ€™s breath caught.

โ€œYou accused and continually disrespected an emperorโ€ฆ You donโ€™t really have an excuse to stop me from killing you, do you?โ€

Grimman shivered helplessly and threw himself to the ground. โ€œP-Please forgive my discourtesy!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t look up. Itโ€™s uncomfortable to look into the eyes of an old man whoโ€™s going to die any minute now.โ€

โ€œO-Okay.โ€

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ Joshua turned to look at the paladins and priests.

The paladins and priests had been exchanging anxious glances, but they quickly made a decision after Joshua spoke to them.

โ€œPlease forgive us!โ€

โ€œPlease grant us mercy!โ€

Joshua gave their prostrate forms a pleased look.

โ€œIโ€™ll forgive you.โ€

โ€œTh-Thank you!โ€

Some of the paladins tilted their heads, confused; they hadnโ€™t thought they would be forgiven this easily. Joshua was as infamous as he was popular.

โ€œBut what will you people give me?โ€ Joshua asked.

โ€œExcuse me?โ€

โ€œHmm? You arenโ€™t going to walk away after just saying youโ€™re sorry, are you? Youโ€™re the believers of merciful Hermes.โ€

The zealots flinched.

โ€œWoahโ€”you people would probably just say sorry after killing an innocent person,โ€ Joshua said sarcastically.

โ€œH-How can you make such a comparisonโ€”โ€

โ€œWhat are you talking about? You people were trying to do something worse just now. Well over tens of thousands of people would perish in war, but you tried to start one. I was terrified, you know? A gang of paladins pointing fingers at a small number of people, threatening to start a war. Gosh, it was so scary that I couldnโ€™t speak properly.โ€

Grimman was on the verge of swearing, but he just barely held it back. Although he wanted to ask Joshua what he had been doing until now, he would never say it out loud.

A silence fell upon the area.

โ€œSo how will you compensate for my mental damage?โ€ Joshua said with a little smile.

* * *

Beelzebub was the king of infinite undead that possessed the power of Gluttony, one of the Seven Evil Sinsโ€™ powers.

โ€œGrrrr.โ€

On top of that mountain, inside Marquess Turtlerโ€™s castle, were many corpses. It was obvious who was behind this massacre, given that various kinds of undead were newly born from those corpses.

The corpses wearing infantrymanโ€™s gear became skeletons.

The headless knights turned into dullahans. The corpse exuding an especially strong energy of death was Turtler.

-Huffโ€ฆ huffโ€ฆ

The newly resurrected death knight breathed loudly through his black helmet, but Turtlerโ€™s return wasnโ€™t the only problem.

A loud thrumming shook the air. The clear form of a black tortoise was formed behind the death knight, but the tortoise was also an undead; half of its shell had already decayed away.

โ€œTh-Thatโ€™s possibleโ€ฆ?โ€ Anna mumbled, her voice trembling.

If it was possible to make an authority into an undead, the continent would become a paradise for black mages when they reappeared. Black mages would not only be able to turn the enemies they killed into their allies but also preserve their full power.

โ€œStay back.โ€ Kireua gestured to Anna.

โ€œA-Are you really going to fight them?โ€

โ€œI should try.โ€

โ€œAsk for help around the continent! The undead are everyoneโ€™s enemies. I donโ€™t know about other countries, but the Hubalt Empire would surely step in since they call themselves the holy empire!โ€ Anna shrieked.

Kireua didnโ€™t even give it a second of thought and shook his head. Since he had studied in the Thran Kingdom, he knew better than anyone what kind of tyrants strong countries were and the tragedies that befell weaker countries. Although Avalon wasnโ€™t as weak as Thran, there was no denying that Avalon had become significantly weaker. There was no telling what demands the Hubalt Empire would make in return for their help.

โ€œIf I retreat now, the whole western region will turn into the Demon Realm,โ€ Kireua said.

โ€œWhat? Turn into the Demon Realm?โ€

โ€œYeah, the Seven Evil Sinsโ€™ powers have the ability to turn a certain region into an environment similar to the Demon Realm.โ€

Kireua released his energy.

โ€œIt would have been better if you had yielded,โ€ Beelzebub muttered with a crooked grin. โ€œYou wonโ€™t be able to endure a single attack from my knight here.โ€

Beelzebubโ€™s ability was outstanding on the battlefield, but he wasnโ€™t invincible. The moment he used up all of his demonic power, he wouldnโ€™t be able to maintain his undead anymore.

โ€˜โ€ฆWait, how do I know these facts?โ€™ Kireua wondered.

-Grrrrr!

The death knightโ€”formerly Turtler before his deathโ€”held up his sword and roared like a general commanding his army to march. All the undead inside the castle advanced on Kireua simultaneously.

The princeโ€™s muscles tensed. The priority of a battle was clear.

โ€˜Eliminate the leader first.โ€™

He had only one chance before he got completely surrounded.

An enormous, raging storm suddenly sprang up around Kireua and Anna.

โ€œYour Highness! I donโ€™t know what youโ€™re trying to do, but do it quickly!โ€ Anna shouted.

The storm had been created by Annaโ€™s elemental spirit magic. It created a curtain of wind that separated the undead from Kireua, but ten of the undead had already slipped in and were approaching him.

-Krrrr!

A dullahan, one of those ten undead, was about to strike Kireuaโ€™s head with his sword.

Just then, Kireua leaped high in the air. A Kireuaโ€™s aura rose up from his sword like tongues of flame, and he thrust it outward.

โ€œAhhhhhh!โ€ Kireua shouted.

The death knight was visibly confused. When their swords clashed, a loud and unpleasant assailed their ears. It was a battle of aura now, not strength.

โ€œMmmโ€ฆโ€ Kireua grunted. The rebound he could feel through his hand was very strong.

He failed to accomplish his goal. Hundreds of undead were about to trap him..

โ€˜If His Majesty were hereโ€ฆ how would he have fought?โ€™ Kireua wondered.

One of Turtlerโ€™s titles was โ€œImpenetrable Shieldโ€, so would it be too arrogant to hope to end this fight with one strike?

โ€˜โ€ฆNo, not at all. Iโ€™m Joshua Sandersโ€™s son.โ€™ Kireuaโ€™s grip unconsciously tightened around his sword.

Annihilate the demons and recover the west as well as the northโ€ฆ Joshua Sandersโ€™s son should be able to do that, although Kireua was still not particularly interested in the throne.

โ€˜The childrenโ€™s reputation is also the parentsโ€™. Iโ€™ll never allow my mother to be insulted for giving birth to a half-wit son with no ambition.โ€™

-Are you a half-wit, Kireua?

Kireuaโ€™s eyes widened upon hearing the voice inside his mind. โ€˜Coalโ€ฆ?โ€™

-Iโ€™m back!

โ€˜Y-You come back now?โ€™

-Did you miss me, Kireua?

Kireua froze for a moment, his sword still locked against the dullahanโ€™s, but he quickly broke into a grin.

โ€˜Yeah, Iโ€™ve missed you so freaking much.โ€™
