Chapter 17: Thrill of killing

Chapter 17

"Are you serious? Those were really your brothers?" I asked in disbelief. No way I would have known, neither of them had mentioned anything about being related, and not like I would have hesitated even knowing they were her brothers, but at least I wouldn’t have depended on her help to kill them.

"We were never close growing up so I’m not supposed to feel anything towards them, in fact I don’t feel anything towards them. It’s just, sad." She said quietly, then almost like a switch, the expression on her face turned from sad to blank as she wiped off the tear on her face. "But I’m fine, I’m even glad they’re dead."

The change was fast, just now I thought she was pained about their death, but she seems fine.

"Alright then, get the keys, we’re leaving." I ordered, turning and walking away without waiting for her as I wiped my bloodied hands on a handkerchief I always kept in my pocket.

She caught up with me moments later, showing me three keys she retrieved from them. Two had the number ten on them and the other had the number five.

"You earned them, they’re yours to keep."

"I’m not taking them." She declared, frowning like I’d done something wrong by letting her keep the points.

"Why?" I asked with a raised brow.

"It feels like I’m using the lives of my brothers for points. Not that I care but it doesn’t settle with me."

Her words made me stop in my tracks as I turned to face her, "what’d they do to you? You don’t seem to care that much, in fact I noticed no sibling connection between either of you, other than the other three had similar haircuts, same hair color and they fought together." I was genuinely curious, was it that they weren’t brought up together? What exactly is the past drama between them?

"Well, we aren’t exactly siblings from the same parents, but we were brought up by the same parents. We were all adopted together. I don’t know exactly if they’re blood siblings, but I was adopted long after them, so to them I was always the stranger."

Now it makes sense why they never acknowledged her presence during the fight, I doubt they even knew what her ability was, otherwise they would have figured out she was helping me out and would have gotten rid of her first.

"You don’t have to tell me more, I can already tell you guys were never close. If you don’t care like you said, then why cry? And why won’t you accept the damn points?"

"I...I don’t know. Maybe they felt dearer to me than I once thought. I just refused to acknowledge it all these years. I mean, I had spent years trying to gain their attention and validation but nothing ever worked, they always saw me as inferior, since they had awakened and I had not. When I finally awakened, I was so excited to show them my ability but they had already left for Voldrak. To them, I was never worth paying attention to, in fact I was more inferior than an ant."

I sighed, listening to her talk. I wasn’t someone who’d stay to listen to someone’s sob story, but somehow I was invested in this one, maybe because it reminded me of my own past, but whatever. "You know, that’s a lot of talking for a simple question I asked. Forget it, gimme the keys if you don’t want them. You can have this one instead." I said, giving her the first one we got from the stealth guy who first attacked me.

She collected it from me without hesitation, almost like she was glad I was being considerate, not that I was... I just couldn’t let her fail this test. She was my personal toy after all.

She then handed me the other three keys, and without waiting for another word from her, I turned and kept walking, keeping the keys in my pocket. That was already forty-five points, twenty points of mine, ten each and another five from those brothers.

I had already gathered this much and we’d been inside for barely one hour. This was too easy, I wanted a bit more challenge, something I would struggle with, someone who would give me the thrill of battle I’ve missed so much.

I didn’t mind cutting people down or painting the earth with the blood of the people who challenged me, but there was no satisfaction in dismantling opponents who couldn’t even push me past the basics. What I wanted was pressure, real pressure. The kind that forced me to sharpen my blade rather than keep it sheathed.

Still, I couldn’t just go wild. Throwing everything out now would only make me a bigger target, and I wasn’t in the mood to deal with swarms of gnats before the real predators showed themselves. Whatever, maybe I should just be patient and see who comes next. If another damn weakling came my way, I would even... 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

My thoughts were interrupted when I noticed a massive boulder coming our way. I moved fast, grabbing Lilian and teleporting away from where the massive boulder landed, the weight of it cracking the earth and shaking the ground.

"Finally found you, cocky bastard." A voice I so much recognized spoke, before he finally came into view. Dante, I’ve been waiting for you. A smirk involuntarily tugged my lips, I’d finally found a real challenge. This would be the first time I’m fighting him with my powers, I was curious to test his limits, and to test mine too.

Carefully, I dropped Lilian to the floor, my attention fixed on Dante. "You’re late. I expected you to come sooner." I taunted, my tone mocking. "And you’re alone today. What happened? Where are your minions?"

Dante laughed like I’d asked a ridiculous question, "Those weaklings? I got rid of them and retrieved their points for myself. Guess how many I have with me now? No don’t bother, I’ll tell you... two hundred, I got two hundred points with me now." He grinned, his expression almost devilish.

Yeah, this bastard was definitely the devil. He actually killed them all and many others too, I could tell from the stains of blood all over his face and shirt. Dante was a psychopath, and he’d finally tasted the thrill of killing, there was no way he would stop now.
