Chapter 722: Chapter 722. The Darkness Demon Descends

After reaching the opposite riverbank, Huang San followed the river in the direction of Saint’s Rest, where his army was also retreating. However, many spirit beasts suddenly came from where they were heading. Some amphibious-type spirit beasts burst out of the river.

While Huang San and Wu Di were strong enough to face these spirit beasts, the number of beasts made it difficult to protect the others. Huang San was especially worried about Huang Zen, so he opted to move away while vending off the spirit beasts.

"How can there be so many spirit beasts at this place?" Wu Di asked.

"These are not local beasts. They are too varied," Huang San said.

"Tamed beasts?" Wu Di asked. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"I suspected so," Huang San replied. "That Lin Xiaolong must have prepared this for a long time. We can’t let them lead us around like this!"

Huang San used his arcane art that summoned leaf darts. As a Peak Spirit Stage, his leaf darts were much more deadly than they used to be. They easily pierced the spirit beasts, even those that possessed thick hides.

Three giant snakes with spiked scales sneaked behind and captured the Mystic Stage cultivators off guard. Their mouths were flexible enough to open as wide as a person. Two of the snakes swallowed whole two soldiers who guarded Huang Zen. The other one slipped through. Its mouth was wide open and about to devour Huang Zen.

"Zen...!" Huang San called with worry. He had put himself at the front to protect the others. Huang Zen was too far behind him.

"Worry not, Your Majesty!" Wu Di exclaimed. His muscly body slammed into the snake before it could touch Huang Zen. He grabbed the snake with two hands. By twisting and pulling, he ripped the snake in two.

Wu Di might have saved Huang Zen from the snake, but he wasn’t aware that there was another prowler. A small tentacle wrapped around Huang Zen’s leg. The tentacle immediately pulled and dragged him away.

It turned out a giant rodent-like beast had been hiding not far away. This spirit beast had an elephant-like trunk. It could elongate its trunk to an extreme length and move it like a snake. This trunk was the tentacle that seized Huang Zen.

While dragging Huang Zen away, the trunk wrapped around his body, binding him. The spirit beast placed Huang Zen on its back before running away.

"Zen...!!!" Huang San called. He immediately chased after Huang Zen. As if expecting his move, a gigantic ogre appeared to block his path.

"Out of my way...!" Huang San exclaimed. He took out the lightning scepter and used it. The ogre couldn’t dodge the blue lightning. One hit from the lightning burned it into a char.

Wu Di also wanted to chase, but the two spiked snakes blocked his path.

"Bastard!" Wu Di cursed. He blamed himself for not noticing the rodent-like spirit beast. It could camouflage its trunk, making it hard for cultivators to sense its trunk’s movement.

Wu Di transformed into the Saintly Ape. His two arms also gigantified. He grabbed the two snakes’ heads and crushed them with a squeeze. He then shot forward. Despite his enhanced physique, he could barely keep up with Huang San’s speed.

The rest of the Mystic Stage soldiers couldn’t keep up with the two. They continued to get harassed by the spirit beasts.

Huang San was catching up to the rodent-like beast. He was about to use his arcane art that summoned an entangling vine, but the spirit beast suddenly slipped into a small hole in the ground with Huang Zen in tow.

The hole was about the size of a human. If Huang San entered, it would be hard for him to move around. Even so, he couldn’t leave Huang Zen behind. He jumped and channeled his energy into his golden longsword. His body then spun as he dove back down. The energy from his sword was like a drill that bore into the ground. The hole the spirit beast used was enlarged as he burrowed into it.

Huang San used his cultivation sense to track the rodent-like beast as it burrowed deeper. The beast could conceal the energy of its trunk but not its entire body. To Huang San’s surprise, the resistance from the ground disappeared, and he came out into a cave.

He saw the rodent-like beast running ahead of him. He stopped his drilling motion and focused on his movement art. In a few steps, he had almost caught up to the spirit beast again. He saw the spirit beast about to make a turn into another hole. He wasn’t going to let it. He used the lightning scepter.

However, he didn’t target the spirit beast. He didn’t want the lightning energy to harm Huang Zen as well. The blue lightning hit the hole. The spirit beast was stunned by the lightning zapping so near it. It halted for an instant.

Huang San didn’t let go of that instant. A barbed whip lashed out of him. The whip snatched the spirit beast and pulled it over. Huang San’s sword cut the trunk that held Huang Zen. Without stopping his slash, his sword flashed several more times. The rodent-like beast split into several pieces.

Huang San’s sword slashed again, cutting the trunk that still wrapped around Huang Zen. Huang Zen gasped after he was released.

"Are you alright?" Huang San asked with worry.

"Un... Uncle! Thank you for saving me," Huang Zen said.

"It’s good that you are safe," Huang Sand sighed in relief. "Come on. Let’s leave this place."

Huang Zen couldn’t agree more. Thankfully, he wasn’t wounded by the ordeal just now. He only had a few scratches and bruises from scraping against the ground when the spirit beast dragged him through the small tunnel.

They walked back toward the hole they came in from. As they neared the hole, Huang San stopped Huang Zen.

"What’s wrong, uncle?" Huang Zen asked. He saw that Huang San was scowling.

Huang San didn’t answer. After a few moments of silence, he told Huang Zen, "Back..."

Huang Zen didn’t understand, but he could perceive the seriousness in Huang San’s expression. The two backed slowly.

Huang Zen felt it then, an intense, ominous sensation assailed his senses. He never had such a feeling before, but he knew immediately what he was sensing. "A... A demonic aura with the darkness element," he uttered.

The hole they came in from, the one that Huang San had enlarged, slowly darkened. As it did, a being entirely shrouded in dark shadows slowly descended from that hole. It landed in the cave. Huang San and Huang Zen couldn’t see the face behind the dark shroud, but they were sure this being was staring directly at them.

Huang San didn’t dare to be brash. Even though his cultivation sense informed him that the demon before him had a lower cultivation level, the demon’s dense aura was intensely suffocating. He wasn’t certain he could win in a direct fight.

"... Zen, run the other way. I’m sure there is another way out of this cave," Huang San said.

"Uncle, I’m not leaving you," Huang Zen declared.

"Zen! This demon is no normal opponent. I can’t protect you if I must fight it!" Huang San exclaimed.

Huang San’s tone made Huang Zen realize his shortcomings. He was only at the Peak Mystic Stage. If he stayed, he would only hinder Huang San. He gritted his teeth, cursed himself silently, then turned and ran away.

"Uncle, you must survive! I will wait for you!!" He exclaimed.

A deep, muffled voice came from the shrouded demon, "Stay."

The demon waved his hand forward. Multiple small darts shrouded in darkness flew forward.

"You won’t hurt my nephew!" Huang San exclaimed. The longsword in his right hand turned into a blur. Countless sword lights flashed around him. These sword lights covered the entire section of the cave. They knocked down all the dark darts. None could pass.

Despite successfully blocking the opponent’s attack, Huang San didn’t feel any better. From the impacts he felt, the power the demon produced surpassed even him, who was a Peak Spirit Stage. When he noticed the dark darts he had knocked down, his frown became deeper. The darkness shrouding the darts was gone, revealing them to be small knives.

He recognized these knives, but no... The person he usually saw using them was already dead. He chased away the random thoughts in his mind. He understood the demon before him was not an opponent he could afford to be careless with. He must focus!

The lightning scepter reappeared in his left hand. The scepter shone, and a blue lightning bolt shot forward. The lightning’s speed was extremely fast. Yet, the demon managed to shift away. The lightning zoomed past and struck the cave wall far behind.

Huang San was shocked by the feat. Though it was only a split second, he was sure the demon moved to the side just before the blue lightning was discharged. In all his life, he had only seen one person do that.

"A... Amon...?"
