Chapter 290: Probably

Theron’s thoughts had been occupied by the piece of the moon for a while. He couldn’t help but wonder how this was related to the Daggers of the Night, if this was really what the old assassin was looking for, and why he would even need to stabilize the situation in the branch for it to be useful in the first place.

It had to be remembered that the old assassin hadn’t sent Theron over for the sake of just finding this piece of stone and taking it out. Of course, there was a chance that the old man thought he wouldn’t be able to find it in the first place, but why wouldn’t he go himself, then?

That, unfortunately, was a question Theron had an answer to too. It took months to travel here. The only reason the Space Mancer could freely move between the two provinces was because of her Space Mana. Even for the old assassin, it would probably take weeks.

Then Theron recalled how involved the old man was in the processes of the Thistle Brook Branch of Daggers of the Night. It made him wonder if that was really because he was so bored… or if it was because it was necessary.

Why did the old man feel like he had to be present near the branch? And why did he feel the need to get Theron to stabilize the situation here?

There was a conspiracy brewing here to be sure, but Theron had no idea what it was all about. freewёbnoνel.com

But he did have a curious thought.

If there was one Element you should want to be in control of as an assassin… it probably was Darkness.

Theron slipped into the Daggers of the Night branch once again, his steps light. The room was the same as how he had left it, which wasn’t too much of a surprise.

The Gold Assassins of this branch knew that their head was a Space Mancer. Because they were aware of this, they were more used to her disappearing for long periods of time and then suddenly appearing once again.

None of them dared to step out of line while she was away, but the trouble was obviously that too many odd things were happening now.

With all of the assassins trapped, and none of those on the outside able to return, it began to raise speculations.

Why would the Space Mancer do this? Had something happened to her?

This was why Theron needed to dispel the formation trapping everyone inside. But he couldn’t just do it casually and without reason either, or else that would just cause more confusion and make them feel as though they had a chance to take advantage.

Essentially speaking, Theron needed to make them think the Space Mancer was still alive.

As for the question of soul lamps, assassins didn’t have such things because of their soul brands. But the one that managed all of them was the Space Mancer herself. Meaning…

No one knew she was dead just yet.

‘I guess we should start scouting the situation now.’

Theron stepped outside of the room, his hood pulled over his head. There was a slight vibration and then sway in his body before he vanished completely.

Sadie looked out over a balcony ledge, her palms propping up her chin.

The moon looked quite beautiful tonight, but it was yet another full one. The last had been barely a little more than a week ago, and here they were with another.

There was a shift to her back, but she didn’t look.

“You should have let me participate,” Sadie said calmly.

“You’re too young.”

“He’s only a year older than me.”

“Two.”

“A year and a half.”

“More like a year and three quarters.”

Sadie fell into silence, clearly not having a rebuttal. Theron would be turning 15 soon, but she had only turned 13 not too long ago.

“This isn’t a storm you should be a part of.”

“You know the situation, but you’re still doing this. It’s cruel,” Sadie said, still not looking back.

“It is not the responsibility of the Nightingale—”

“To what? Not our responsibility to protect our own citizens?”

“He hardly counts as that. He’s broken the law so many times he should be thankful we haven’t thrown him beneath a cell. You know how much trouble he’s stirred up. The Imperial Capital was practically on the verge of a civil war because of him.”

“And I wonder why that is.”

Sadie’s jab was crisp, but her tone was indifferent.

If they had done what needed to be done in the first place, or they didn’t allow an outsider to skirt into their territory and use their citizens like sacrificial lambs to the slaughter, would Theron even be acting like he was now?

Also, it sounded like they were doing Theron a favor, when in reality they all knew well enough—just as well as Theron did—that the reason he was still alive was because he was too useful to kill.

Theron knew what line he was toeing, he was well aware that not everyone was in the dark about his actions, but he still did as he pleased anyway.

His words at the gathering today illustrated that perfectly. It was a reminder to the Nightingales as well.

He was alive because he was a giant others stood on the shoulders of, and he was well aware of it. There would be nothing to stop him from taking advantage of it either.

“And what are you going to do if he kills one of them?” Sadie finally asked.

“That won’t happen.”

“I said if.”

“And I said that won’t happen.”

“I. Said. If.”

“What are you not understanding? These people aren’t on a level that even you can understand just yet. You’re still growing, and you haven’t awakened your bloodline properly just yet or completely fused with your other Shadows.

“Theron has no capability to kill these people even while they’re hiding their true origins, let alone if he pushes them to the point they no longer care to hide them.”

“How many times do I need to repeat myself?” Sadie finally turned back, staring her elder brother in the eyes with a sharp coldness that caused the air to plummet in temperature.

Aetherion looked at his little sister with the same indifferent calmness.

“Then he probably won’t get out of here alive.”
