Chapter 391: Chapter 4: I Wasn’t Brushing You Off

Fu Jichen never thought that one day he would be called a fool and couldn’t even argue back because he really hadn’t thought of it at the time.

The man remained silent, and Shen Jianian laughed even more happily: "No words left to say, huh?"

"Yes." Fu Jichen bravely admitted his brain wasn’t working well, "I’m slow to react."

"So, do you like the Mid-autumn gift I gave you?" Shen Jianian’s eyelashes fluttered, her eyes bright with joy, as she grabbed his hand under the covers.

"I couldn’t like it more." Fu Jichen tightened his grip, holding her small hand firmly, his words sincere and passionate.

Compared to his initial daze upon hearing the news, he was much calmer now, but if you looked closely, you could still see the joy in his eyes, impossible to fake.

Shen Jianian buried her face in his chest, rubbed against it, and let out a gentle laugh, then asked him: "What do you think our baby will look like?"

Fu Jichen didn’t answer her question. He picked up the phone on the bedside table, lit up the screen for her to see: "Past midnight, pregnant women should rest early."

Shen Jianian looked startled, is it really that late?

"But I can’t sleep, what should I do?"

"Close your eyes and don’t talk, you’ll fall asleep after a while naturally." Fu Jichen wanted to laugh, keeping your eyes open while talking just makes it harder to sleep, doesn’t it?

Pausing, he continued: "You’ve been busy all day today, don’t you feel tired?"

Shen Jianian turned her head, buried in his embrace, to face the ceiling: "Um... my body is tired, but my mind is very active. Do you know this feeling?"

Fu Jichen: "..."

How could he not know because he was in the same state as she was now.

"Let’s keep chatting, I’ll sleep once we get tired of talking." Shen Jianian softly teased him, returning to the previous question, "Who do you think the baby will look more like, you or me?"

"You."

"Why? I think it’d be better if they looked like you."

"Then... if it’s a girl, she should look like you, if a boy, look like me."

"But, I’ve heard people say daughters usually look like their fathers, sons look like their mothers." Shen Jianian said, and new questions popped in her head, "Do you prefer a son or a daughter?"

"..." Fu Jichen smiled helplessly, has she turned into the ’ten thousand whys’? How could there be so many questions?

After waiting for a while and seeing he remained silent, Shen Jianian pushed him, urging: "Answer quickly."

Fu Jichen spoke according to his true feelings, saying: "Either is fine."

Shen Jianian wasn’t too satisfied with that answer, she raised her voice with a hint of dissatisfaction, "Are you sure you’re not just brushing me off?"

Fu Jichen felt utterly innocent, it’s said pregnant women’s thoughts can’t be judged by common sense, and indeed, Shen Jianian was already showing signs of this. He threw the question back at her: "Well, what would you say? Do you prefer a boy or a girl? If you prefer a boy, would you dislike it if we had a girl? If you prefer a girl, would you dislike it if we had a boy?"

Shen Jianian was quite stumped, it seemed to make sense.

Moreover, they couldn’t just decide the child’s gender by discussing it, everything was fate.

"As long as it’s born by you, I’ll love it. I’m being honest, not brushing you off." Fu Jichen lowered his head to plant a gentle kiss on her forehead and softly reminded, "This pregnant lady, you really should get some sleep."

Shen Jianian wasn’t sleepy at all, from her initial excitement and anticipation, she transitioned to anxiety: "What if our child isn’t healthy? I had a car accident..."

"Don’t overthink, the last medical report is still in the drawer, do you need me to get it for you now?" Fu Jichen used a soothing tone to alleviate her worries, "The doctor said your health is very good. Think about it, you didn’t even catch a cold last winter."

Shen Jianian’s heart slightly eased.

To prevent her from asking strange questions that would be difficult to answer, Fu Jichen simply turned off the bedside lamp and suggested like coaxing a child: "Let’s play a game to see who can stay quiet longer, the loser has to fulfill one request from the winner."

Shen Jianian muttered: "Isn’t this the ’123 Wooden Man’ game?"

"Alright, starting from this second."

Fu Jichen didn’t care whether she wanted to play or not, he announced the start of the game directly.

Shen Jianian felt slightly speechless inside, but her actions followed the game rules uncontrollably; she didn’t speak, didn’t move, and even closed her eyes.

She didn’t know how much time had passed when Fu Jichen heard the breathing beside him gradually become even and soft, he knew Shen Jianian had fallen asleep, and he let out a slight sigh of relief.

If he didn’t find a way to coax her to sleep, she might chat all night long.

Fu Jichen turned off the alarm on both their phones, letting Shen Jianian wake up naturally.

The Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day merge, creating a long holiday period, but for someone like Fu Jichen, holidays are rarer than top luxury goods. Today, they had an appointment with the doctor for Shen Jianian’s check-up, so he didn’t go to the office or work in his study; instead, he moved his laptop to the bedroom.

Sitting on a leather sofa, wearing cloth slippers, a gray V-neck thin top paired with casual trousers, he lounged against the sofa back with a relaxed demeanor, the laptop resting on his lap, the black pant cuffs slightly raised, revealing bony ankles.

His ten fingers danced across the keyboard with agility and speed like they were performing a dance, his eyes focused on the screen, occasionally frowning, his elbow resting on the armrest, with his index finger supporting his chin in a thoughtful pose, occasionally lifting his gaze to glance at the person sleeping soundly on the large bed not far away.

She must have been really tired, as it was already eleven, and Shen Jianian showed no signs of waking up.

Fu Jichen thought to himself, his expression softened instantly, leaning over to pick up a cup from the coffee table to take a sip of tea, and continued typing on the keyboard. After a while, he inserted a wireless earphone into his left ear, listening to the person on the other side reporting on project progress and financial status.

He responded in a very low voice, simply saying "hmm" to indicate acknowledgment. When an opinion was needed from him, he would switch to writing—sending an email instead.

His ear without an earphone captured a slight sound, lifting his eyelids, seeing the person on the bed turn over, wriggle a bit, then sit up with a slightly confused expression, further ruffling her already messy long hair, her eyes scanning around until they landed on the man sitting on the sofa.

For two seconds, Shen Jianian’s brain suddenly snapped awake, remembering the hospital visit that morning.

Unaware that Fu Jichen was on a call, Shen Jianian’s eyes widened and she exclaimed, "Am I late?!" She reached for her phone on the bedside table, glanced at it, and saw it was already almost half-past eleven.

Fu Jichen said warmly, "Don’t worry, it’s okay to go late. I’ve already contacted the hospital."

The person on the phone stopped reporting, emitting a tone of suspicion: "Mr. Chen?"

Fu Jichen brought his fist to his lips, cleared his throat lightly, and switched back to a serious tone, "Wasn’t talking to you."

"Oh, oh, okay." The person on the other side realized, possibly someone was beside Mr. Chen, recollected where they left off, and continued with the unfinished report.

It’s only then that Shen Jianian noticed Fu Jichen was wearing an earpiece, holding a phone in one hand, the laptop on his lap, casually tapping on the keyboard, seemingly dealing with work matters.

Sticking out her tongue, Shen Jianian refrained from making any more noise and pulled off the quilt to go wash up in the bathroom.

The moment she went in, Fu Jichen said to the person on the phone, "Let’s stop here for today. We’ll find time to discuss the rest later."

After hanging up, he closed the laptop lid, placed it on the adjacent sofa, and stepped towards the bathroom. Shen Jianian was standing there in a daze, staring into the mirror. Leaning against the doorframe, he laughed at her, "Haven’t slept enough?"

Shen Jianian covered her cheeks with both hands, turning her head to look at him, "Overslept, my head feels dizzy."

Fu Jichen walked over, stood beside her, picked up her toothbrush, squeezed on some toothpaste, filled a rinsing cup with warm water, and placed it on the sink, "Go wash up first. I’ll go ask Aunt Cheng to heat up breakfast."

Just as Shen Jianian put the toothbrush in her mouth, she heard him and mumbled through the buzzing of the electric toothbrush, "I need a blood test; shouldn’t I not eat anything?"

"Is that so?" Fu Jichen was slightly startled; matters regarding prenatal tests were beyond his knowledge, "I thought just doing an ultrasound at the hospital would suffice."

With that said, Shen Jianian wasn’t very sure either.

The two inexperienced expectant parents stared at each other in silence for a while before Fu Jichen turned around, "I’ll call the doctor to ask."

Shen Jianian smiled with curved lips, finished washing up, picked up her phone to take a look, only to find messages from Bai Changxia sent the previous night at 11 PM.

Bai Changxia: "I got home safely."

Bai Changxia: "Did you tell Boss Fu? What was his reaction?"

Bai Changxia: "Are you asleep?"

Hand on her hip, Shen Jianian rolled her eyes upward, trying hard to recall what she was doing last night at eleven, probably just finished showering and lying in bed chatting with Fu Jichen, without checking her phone.

Shen Jianian replied to Bai Changxia’s messages: "Mr. Fu demonstrated a textbook case of shock to being stunned."

Bai Changxia: "Hahahahahaha."

By the time they got to the hospital, it was already noon. After finishing the blood test, Shen Jianian pressed a cotton swab against the puncture site.

In fact, she had both the blood test and ultrasound done. Before showing them to the doctor, she took a look herself, putting her earlier unease to rest.

Fu Jichen walked beside her, carrying her bag, and watching her study the ultrasound report while walking, he chuckled, "Can you understand it? Are you pregnant?"

"How could I not?" Shen Jianian raised the report, pointing at the "Ultrasound Suggestion" section, reading aloud to him, "Early pregnancy, intrauterine pregnancy, approximately six weeks and one day pregnant." Reading up to this point, she exclaimed excitedly, "It even shows the exact days!"

Then, she continued reading aloud, "Right ovarian cystic echo...What does this mean? I don’t get it. I’ll ask the doctor in a bit. But look at the front, it clearly indicates early pregnancy."

The smile at the edge of Fu Jichen’s eyes never faded. He hummed in agreement, "We do indeed have a baby now." After saying this, the smile at the corners of his eyes unconsciously deepened.
