Chapter 148: Laying Low for the Right Moment

Huh? Su Yijia had taken a couple of steps towards the small house, but immediately turned back around. Her gaze kept shifting between Xia Weiguo and Qin’s father and mother. The overly eager anticipation on their faces made the Qin family members wish they could give her a good slap and tell her to stay away.

But there was nothing they could do about it, just wishful thinking on their part.

" Weiguo, what do you mean by that? We’re having trouble understanding," Qin’s father asked cautiously, sporting a forced smile that was more pitiful than crying.

"Last time, I told you all to quit your jobs, and the Qin and Wei families did just that. But what about you?" Xia Weiguo’s question was like sharp arrows piercing into them.

Qin’s father and mother felt like they were suddenly trapped in an icy cavern.

"Why should we quit our jobs?" Qin’s mother still sounded resentful.

Xia Weiguo didn’t answer but simply stared at them with cold and emotionless eyes.

"Uncle Xia, my parents know they were wrong. Please forgive them. We’re all family, after all," Qin Mingcheng stepped in, trying to ease the tension.

"Nonsense! They haven’t realized their mistakes at all! You’ve been picking at me and causing trouble for me this whole time. Don’t make me count all the times you attacked me. Not to mention your parents, even you have been finding every chance to criticize me. Don’t think I am a dumb just because I don’t speak," Xia Weiguo lashed out, taking a stand.

Provoking trouble didn’t faze Su Yijia. She was thrilled as she poured a pot of oil to the already flaming fire, hoping to witness the Qin family’s three members sizzle in the frying pan.

"Su Yijia!" Qin’s father couldn’t help but roar with anger.

Seeing Xia Weiguo’s penetrating gaze, he suppressed his rage and said, "Yijia, I know you don’t like us, but if we lose our jobs, your life with Kaize won’t be as good..."

"Spit!" Su Yijia spat disdainfully. "You have no shame. We haven’t spent a single penny of yours. Whether you have jobs or not doesn’t affect us at all."

Qin’s father choked on his breath, almost unable to recover. Qin’s mother, on the other hand, argued, "If we don’t have jobs, it’s your husband’s responsibility to support us, as our son."

This retort was met with nothing but disdain from all present.

"Shut your mouth and stop talking nonsense," Qin’s father snapped through gritted teeth, wishing he could cover her mouth to silence her.

"I’ve never seen such shameless people like you," Su Yijia remarked, her disdain dripping from her words. "Kaize is in this condition, yet you still want to cling to him like leeches, feeding off him. Why should you? You also have a son, don’t you? Even though he’s missing some parts, you can’t rely on your own son? You have the audacity to rely on my husband? You have the nerve! If you dare, go out and tell people your viewpoint, see if anyone agrees with you."

Qin’s mother couldn’t control her emotions and blurted out, "My son doesn’t have a job right now, how can he support us? But your husband, even though he’s paralyzed, didn’t his mother leave behind a lot of inheritance for him? That money and the precious belongings should rightfully have his father’s share as well."

Smack! Qin’s father slapped Qin’s mother hard across the face, sending her tumbling to the ground.

"Stop talking nonsense! Whatever Kaize’s mother left, it’s all his. It has nothing to do with you at all." He emphasized each word slowly and sternly, as though he had never entertained any thoughts of Qin’s inheritance.

Su Yijia clapped her hands lightly in response. "Keep pretending. Qin Zongyao, if you never lusted after my mother-in-law’s inheritance, how did your wife even know about it? Moreover, you could’ve stopped her with a single word while she was talking for so long, but you chose to wait until she finished to slap her. You guys are so foolish, always scheming and calculating. I sincerely advise you not to end up dying in obscurity someday."

Qin’s father and mother were completely paralyzed by these words. They hadn’t expected Su Yijia to be so harsh. Despite their mistakes, they were still elders in Kaize’s family. She should have at least shown some respect. However, Su Yijia didn’t stop at a lack of respect. She had hit the Qin family members in the face and was now itching to kick them while they were down.

"Not to mention that my mother-in-law didn’t leave any inheritance behind, but even if she did, do you really have the nerve to claim it? Do you think that after all these years, your past deeds will go unnoticed? You don’t think that everything you did can’t be traced?" Su Yijia’s gaze darkened, and her words carried a chilling warning.

In the past, the Qin family might not have paid much attention to her words. But now, she had just sent her original parents to prison, where they received the harshest penalty of execution. A brief moment of guilt flashed across their faces.

They couldn’t deceive even Su Yijia, let alone hide the truth from Xia Weiguo and Qin Kaize. Their hearts quivered.

Xia Weiguo had to clench his fists so tightly that his fingertips dug into his palm, causing them to bleed. He barely managed to stay calm and didn’t interrupt Su Yijia.

They hadn’t considered this aspect before. Qin Zongyao had been taking care of everything for nearly two years after his first wife’s death, but he eventually realized he couldn’t manage it all and married Wei Shufen.

Qin Kaize’s mother had difficulty giving birth to her child due to the size of the baby, and doctors said it was a challenging delivery that harmed her health. In the following three years, her health deteriorated, leading to her unfortunate death. Even Qin Mingcheng wasn’t born until a year after Wei Shufen joined the family.

On the surface, everything seemed normal, and no one had any reason to doubt it.

Xia Weiguo had also made an effort to investigate and found everything to be normal.

"What nonsense are you spouting, Su Yijia? Don’t deliberately slander us just because we have conflicts," Qin’s mother stared at the young woman with hatred in her eyes, ready to rush forward and scratch her face.

Su Yijia, however, didn’t pay any attention to her and turned her gaze to Qin’s father. He had a malevolent expression, but all he wanted was for Su Yijia to get as far away from him as possible. Preferably, she would disappear. However, Su Yijia lifted the corner of her eye, examining him, and said, "You’ve calculated so much, but in the end, not only did you come out empty-handed, you also ruined your beloved son. Is it really worth it to have no descendants left in the future?"

"Su Yijia, don’t spout nonsense here. I’ve been honest and upright, I haven’t done anything that would wrong Kaize, let alone his mother," Qin’s father straightened his back.

His serious and sincere expression made him appear as if he was an honest man.
