Chapter 307: Once Bitten, Twice Shy

"Grandpa, Grandma, don’t worry. Kaize takes good care of me. He was fanning me the whole way, so I didn’t feel the heat at all," Su Yijia said with a slightly smug smile, defending Qin Kaize.

But Grandpa Lin and Grandma Lin weren’t convinced. Having previously made a mistake regarding Jiajia’s mother, they were even more critical of the man who had taken their granddaughter away. The saying "once bitten, twice shy" was not just a saying for them.

To Grandpa Lin, the issue wasn’t about fanning or not; if they really cared, they wouldn’t have taken Jiajia out in the scorching heat. Unfortunately, Jiajia was completely smitten with her husband and might not be receptive to such concerns, potentially leading to arguments.

Qin Kaize, noticing their dissatisfaction, quickly took the blame, his tone sincere and apologetic. "Grandpa, Grandma, I didn’t think this through. I promise I won’t make this mistake again."

"It was my idea to go out," Su Yijia interjected, confused as to why Qin Kaize was shouldering the blame again.

"It’s my fault for not considering your health," Qin Kaize said softly, squeezing her small hand. He knew that taking Jiajia out in such hot weather could risk her health, but he couldn’t bring himself to refuse her sweet pleas. He realized he needed to be more principled about Jiajia’s health and safety in the future.

Seeing Qin Kaize’s unwavering insistence, Su Yijia could only press her lips together and stop explaining. However, she felt relieved when she saw the satisfied expressions on her grandparents’ faces.

"Grandpa, Grandma, we understand our mistake. Please don’t be angry anymore," Su Yijia said as she moved closer to them, wrapping an arm around each of them in a show of affection.

"No, no, we couldn’t stay angry at you," Grandma Lin said with a smile that crinkled her eyes. The earlier sternness had completely disappeared.

"Grandpa, Grandma, look, Kaize specially bought some fruit for you from the supply and marketing cooperative. Please eat more," Su Yijia quickly took out the fruit she had prepared from their bag.

Even though Fu Province had a variety of fruits, with current food shortages and limited fruit cultivation, it was rare to get fresh fruit. The industrialization of fruit processing was still limited, so seeing the fresh fruit made Grandpa and Grandma Lin look touched.

"We’re old; eating such good fruit is a waste. You and Ze should eat more. You need to keep your health up," Grandma Lin suggested, wanting Su Yijia and Qin Kaize to take the fruit back to their room and enjoy it slowly during dinner.

But Su Yijia was adamant about not keeping the fruit for themselves.

"Grandpa, Grandma, the fruit didn’t cost much. My mother left me some money. Though I can’t use it freely now, buying you some delicious fruit is still within my means," Qin Kaize spoke up before Su Yijia could.

He had noticed that Jiajia’s grandparents were cautious and wary. He wanted to show them that he was deserving of their trust and would treat Jiajia well.

"You really have a filial heart, Ze," Grandma Lin’s attitude softened, recognizing Qin Kaize’s efforts.

Su Yijia and Qin Kaize spent some time with the elderly couple, enjoying the radio and some fruit. Afterward, they retired to their room, claiming they needed to review high school textbooks and prepare for the upcoming college entrance exams.

Once in the room, Qin Kaize closed the door. As soon as he turned around, Su Yijia nestled into his embrace.

He immediately wrapped his arms around her.

"Don’t be upset. Grandpa and Grandma are just worried about us," Qin Kaize said, gently kissing the top of her head.

Su Yijia leaned back slightly, looking up at him with large, concerned eyes. "I’m worried that Grandpa and Grandma might not trust you, thinking you’re like my father who abandoned his family and caused the Lin family’s ruin. I don’t want you to feel hurt."

She knew Qin Kaize was perceptive and could read between the lines.

"It’s my fault for not doing better. I don’t believe Grandpa and Grandma are wrong in their concerns," Qin Kaize said, his smile fading into a serious expression.

"Don’t think that Grandpa and Grandma doubting me means they doubt you too much. They’ve already lost their daughter and can’t afford to lose you. I’ll work hard to earn their trust," Qin Kaize reassured her.

Seeing that Qin Kaize understood this, Su Yijia felt a sense of relief. "Let’s be more careful in the future and make sure not to cause them any more worry."

"Absolutely. Otherwise, I fear they might really consider finding you a different husband," Qin Kaize said seriously.

"I wouldn’t want that," Su Yijia clung tightly to his waist, snuggling her head into his strong, broad chest and gently rubbing against him.

Though having his sweet wife cozying up to him like this was wonderful, it didn’t help that he’d been restraining himself daily, hardly able to withstand even the slightest provocation.

After just a couple of rubs, Su Yijia could already feel a hard pressure making her uncomfortable. Without him even needing to do anything, she reflexively remembered those nights when her arms would be too sore to lift. And the stinging palms afterward...

Instinctively, she tried to pull away, but Qin Kaize had already wrapped his arms around her, lifting her toward the bed.

"W-wait!" Su Yijia quickly kicked her legs. "It’s still early--why don’t we go to the space and get some work done? We’ll be too exhausted to do anything afterward."

Qin Kaize wanted to refuse, but seeing her in his arms, he remembered her tidiness streak and relented. They’d been out all day and hadn’t even showered yet. She’d definitely dislike it, maybe even get put off herself. Kissing her properly like this? Out of the question.

With no choice, he tamped down his own restlessness.

"Fine, let’s go get some work done in the space first." He buried his head in her neck, taking deep breaths to calm himself down. The next moment, the two of them found themselves in the ever-springlike space.

The sudden drop of seven or eight degrees instantly cooled him off.

The rice and wheat they’d harvested just that afternoon had already ripened again, and the dozen or so fruit trees were laden with ripe fruit. Qin Kaize was right; in this space, they could plant three rounds a day. She really had been missing out before.
