Ruling the Historical Romance Novel as the Female Supporting Character-Chapter 340: Su Xinyue’s Calculations
"Do you want to put on a plaster cast? Don’t be fooled by the slight fracture--if it doesn’t heal properly, it’ll definitely ache when the weather changes," the doctor asked with a frown.
"Yes! Definitely!" The man insisted firmly, leaving no room for argument.
"I don’t want to. I have things to do, and a plaster cast would be inconvenient," Su Xinyue frowned slightly and refused softly.
She truly wanted to refuse. After all, if she had a plaster cast, it would be troublesome to meet those two men. Plus, with a cast on at home, Qin Mingchen, who had just been tormented by Su Yijia and Qin Kaize, would likely take out his frustrations on her. Especially seeing her with a cast, he would seize the opportunity to bully her with all sorts of methods.
"You were injured because of me. Let me take care of everything. Why don’t you stay at my place? As a man, it’s inconvenient for me to take care of you, but my mother could help. Or you could tell me where you live, and my mother and I could come to your place to look after you," the man sincerely suggested.
Su Xinyue, who had been feeling elated and trying to charm the man with her eyes, suddenly sobered up upon hearing his suggestion.
Yes, how could she take someone else to her home when Qin Mingchen, that useless person, was still there?
"What’s wrong? Are you worried your family might scold you for getting hurt? Don’t worry, I’ll explain everything to them. This is all my fault, and if your injury affects your work or studies, I’ll compensate you and your family," the man said, noticing Su Xinyue’s pale face and, out of concern, grabbed her hand to reassure her.
Su Xinyue’s eyes reddened, and she quickly lowered her head.
"No... it’s okay. I can handle it myself," she murmured in a soft, timid voice, like someone who had been bullied for a long time, which only fueled the man’s desire to protect her.
"No matter what, let’s get the cast on first. This concerns your future--you can’t be careless because of anyone or anything," the man insisted resolutely.
Su Xinyue looked up, biting her lower lip lightly with her pearly teeth, and gazed at him gratefully. Then she nodded softly, yielding to his insistence.
The man immediately smiled, relieved. After the cast was applied, he offered to take Su Xinyue home, but she hesitated and shook her head. "Could I stay at the hospital for the night? My foot hurts a lot, and I don’t want to go home and listen to all the noise."
Not waiting for the man’s response, she quickly pulled out a coin and two five-cent coins from her pocket and handed them to him.
"I have money. I won’t trouble you," she said.
"What are you talking about? You got hurt because of me, so I’ll cover the cost," the man said, pretending to be angry as he pushed her hand back.
Without giving Su Xinyue a chance to speak, he went to pay the fees. After returning with the hospital receipt, he carefully helped her back to the ward, making sure she was comfortable with pillows and taking off her shoes before tucking her into bed.
"Do you feel any discomfort?" the man asked with concern.
Su Xinyue shook her head shyly.
"Then I’ll go buy you something to eat. It’s already noon, and I’ll get some food from the State-Owned Restaurant for you. Rest well; I’ll be back soon," the man said gently, making Su Xinyue’s heart flutter.
This man was exactly her type. Although he wasn’t as wealthy as the other two men, he was far more attentive and gentle. With those two, she had to be the one acting delicate and charming, occasionally throwing a little tantrum.
Compared to them, she definitely preferred being with a man like this. If only Qin Mingchen, that useless wretch, hadn’t dared to marry her after being so worthless.
Su Xinyue cursed him over and over in her mind.
About an hour later, the man returned with bags of food.
"Sorry it took so long. There were too many people buying food at the State-Owned Restaurant, and I had to wait in line," he said, placing the food containers on the bedside table and putting two large bags of fruit, canned fruit, peanuts, sunflower seeds, and sweets next to her pillow.
"I bought you some snacks to keep you from getting too bored. I didn’t know what kind of food you like, so I got braised pork, steamed bass, sweet and sour pork, and cabbage with vermicelli, plus a soup made of peanuts, soybeans, and pig’s trotters," the man explained as he opened the containers.
The aroma made Su Xinyue’s appetite surge, and the sound of other patients swallowing their saliva only boosted her vanity.
"Thank you, but I’m not picky," she said, looking at him with a shy smile, her cheeks slightly flushed. She bit her lower lip gently, her eyes downcast and fluttering slightly.
The man, seemingly embarrassed, hurriedly handed her the container with the food.
They chatted as they ate, and Su Xinyue learned that the man’s mother was an accountant at a textile factory and his father a director at the power supply bureau. He was their only child and had graduated from the University of Workers, Peasants, and Soldiers. He had been working as an accountant at the power supply bureau for two years, focusing on his studies before now, and his family was planning to start looking for a marriage match for him.
To be honest, with those two men, she would never consider this man’s conditions. But a man like him was perfect to use as an excuse for marriage. Even though the other two men treated her well, she knew better than anyone whether they had any intention of marrying her.
But this man in front of her was an ideal marriage prospect in every way. Using him as an excuse to pressure the other two was a good plan.
After finishing the meal, Wen Xuran washed the containers and wanted to chat with Su Xinyue again, but she yawned.
"Sorry for troubling you for so long today. You must have other things to do. Maybe you should go. I’ll take a nap and read the newspaper in the afternoon; I’ll be fine," Su Xinyue said.
Wen Xuran looked a bit reluctant to leave. "Alright then. I have work this afternoon, but I’ll bring you dinner after I’m done. Don’t rush to the hospital cafeteria; if I’m late, it means I’m waiting in line at the State-Owned Restaurant."
"Okay, you’ve been so kind. Thank you," Su Xinyue said apologetically.
"This isn’t a bother at all. If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t be hurt. So don’t say such things again," Wen Xuran insisted sternly.
Su Xinyue didn’t argue further, instead nodding reluctantly as if she had no choice.
Wen Xuran helped her lie down and covered her with a thin blanket before reluctantly leaving.
Su Xinyue lay there with her eyes closed for over half an hour, then climbed out of bed. Leaning on her crutch, she grabbed the two bags of snacks and left the hospital.
