Ruling the Historical Romance Novel as the Female Supporting Character-Chapter 342: There’s Always Someone Trying to Make Them the Scapegoat
If no one was watching, she would have definitely held Qin Kaize and comforted him. But now, all she could do was slip her soft little hand into his big palm. Just as she was about to give his palm a gentle squeeze, Qin Kaize suddenly tightened his grip, as if he wanted to merge her into his bones and blood.
The two men beside them were a bit shocked to see their usually stoic leader acting so affectionate after getting married. But they only dared to glance at him before quickly averting their eyes. Even though the situation was urgent, they felt too embarrassed to interrupt.
Qin Kaize’s long fingers unfolded the letter, revealing the address written on it. His eyes darkened slightly.
"Is the man in the photo the person mentioned in this letter?"
"Yes, it seems he didn’t trust anyone else to handle it, so he did it himself," one of the men hurriedly explained.
"So, what did he do?" Su Yijia asked, feigning surprise.
"He set Qin Mingchen’s house on fire shortly after leaving."
"Did he survive?" Su Yijia forced herself to suppress the slight disappointment in her heart, pretending to be curious. But her mind was already racing.
If Qin Mingchen truly survived and wasn’t killed by Su Xinyue this time, she could have Uncle Xia send over the confessions those men signed, and let him rot in prison for a few years. Afterward, he’d be labeled a convict for life, unable to find work, marry, or have children--a punishment worse than death.
"No, he didn’t. It was nighttime, and the windows didn’t provide a view inside. By the time the flames reached the door, our people realized something was wrong. Although we managed to control the fire before it spread to neighboring houses, Qin Mingchen still died in the flames."
The two men lowered their heads in guilt. They knew that Qin Kaize had a bad relationship with his half-brother, but this was a matter of life and death. They were afraid Qin Kaize would be angry with them.
But Qin Kaize’s expression merely darkened; he showed no signs of anger. "Did you find out anything else?" he asked.
Just then, someone else climbed over the wall and came in.
"I had those people you mentioned investigated. Tonight, we caught them all," Ke Zeming said, his face dark with anger, though not directed at Su Yijia or Qin Kaize. He was furious about the things they found in that man’s secret hideout tonight.
"You wouldn’t believe the amount of dangerous materials he had stashed in that two-story building. They could have destroyed half of Hu City! Thank goodness you were monitoring Su Xinyue, and that she got involved with this man. Otherwise, it would have been a disaster."
Ke Zeming walked up to Qin Kaize and handed him a thick file. Though technically, these documents weren’t for Qin Kaize to see, Ke Zeming had gotten special permission because Qin Kaize was the one who initially uncovered the issue, and now his family was involved. Whether it was to prepare them or to help identify more problems, it was necessary.
Qin Kaize quickly flipped through the documents, his expression growing darker by the second.
"Did you clear everything up?" he asked.
"Yes, everything’s been sorted out," Ke Zeming confirmed.
"Good. It’s enough that you’ve caught the people. By the way, he helped Su Xinyue take care of Qin Mingchen tonight," Qin Kaize said as he handed over the photos and the phone number.
"Are you going to handle Qin Mingchen’s affairs now?" Ke Zeming asked, a bit disgusted. The two were half-brothers, but also sworn enemies. Having to clean up after someone like that was revolting, at least in his opinion.
"No, I’ll wait until someone comes to us first," Qin Kaize coldly declined. He even looked at Ke Zeming as if he were an idiot.
"Yeah, you should get some sleep. I have a feeling they’re going to pin this on us somehow," Su Yijia yawned, leaning against Qin Kaize.
According to the book, it was supposed to be Su Xinyue who dealt with Qin Mingchen. Now, it was that man who did it instead, and the timing seemed rushed, as if there was some urgency. Su Yijia couldn’t help but suspect that she and her husband might end up as the scapegoats again. So, she figured it was best to rest while she could, just in case things got ugly later.
"Alright, get some rest. The situation at that hideout is serious, so we need to conduct overnight interrogations," Ke Zeming said before turning to leave.
The two men had completed their tasks, so Qin Kaize told them to pick any empty room to rest in. Then, he led Su Yijia back to their room to sleep. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
With so much on his mind, Qin Kaize found it hard to sleep. Meanwhile, Su Yijia, who usually fell asleep the moment her head hit the pillow, stayed awake and leaned against his chest.
"Are you still thinking about that man?" she asked, pouting as she playfully brushed the tips of her hair against his neck.
"No, I was just wondering how to avoid cleaning up after Qin Mingchen," Qin Kaize replied, his breath hitching slightly. His large hand rested on Su Yijia’s lower back, gently stroking her, pulling his thoughts away from all those chaotic matters.
"You’ll have to deal with it eventually. They might be trying to frame us for Qin Mingchen’s death--killing three birds with one stone. We’ll have to pin this on Su Xinyue, and then burn Qin Mingchen’s body and scatter his ashes in the sea," Su Yijia suggested casually.
"Let Su Xinyue’s cousins handle her remains. You don’t need to worry about it," Qin Kaize said, stroking her head and kissing her.
"Will this evidence be enough to prove she was the mastermind?" Su Yijia was slightly concerned they might not be able to completely pin down Su Xinyue. After all, things had deviated from the book, and the man had acted on her behalf. If he took all the blame, Su Xinyue might escape punishment.
"Even if we can’t charge her as the mastermind, there’s still the adultery charge--having affairs with two men during her marriage, plus that man’s special status, and the fact that they targeted us. Given the honors we just received, there’s no way she can argue her way out. She’ll be facing a firing squad," Qin Kaize assured, explaining in detail what awaited Su Xinyue.
After hearing this, Su Yijia finally relaxed. As long as Su Xinyue could be completely erased from this world, she didn’t care what the charges were.
Feeling no guilt or remorse, she thought to herself, it wasn’t as if she forced Su Xinyue to be with another man, nor did she make them resort to underhanded tactics. If Su Xinyue had only focused her ambitions on Qin Mingchen, it wouldn’t have taken long for him to treat her like a treasure, even without having their own child.
