Chapter 436: Mu Xiaowei, You Are So Selfish

After discussing among themselves, the Wang family quickly decided not to heed Wang Fengsong’s provocations. Since she was already in a tight spot, they figured she could deal with the fallout on her own. If this matter could be settled lightly, they would later lower their stance and appease her. After all, Mu Xiaowei didn’t think highly of her as a wife, and Mu Yanming, their nephew, was destined to fail. She couldn’t rely on her family to give her any support.

Meanwhile, Wang Fengsong was cursing under her breath. Had she known this family was so cowardly, she wouldn’t have wasted so much effort on them. What was she supposed to do now? Should she contact someone and take action herself? No! She couldn’t do that! She was definitely being watched, and if she moved, she would be crushed.

Frustrated, the veins in Wang Fengsong’s temples throbbed. She stood outside the Mu family home for a while, then finally steeled herself and went inside. Just as she stepped through the door, she was startled to see several uniformed police officers standing in the living room.

"Wang Fengsong, we need to take you to the police station for questioning regarding your son’s exam cheating," one of the officers said.

Wang Fengsong froze, unsure how to respond, a chill running down her spine. "What’s there to question about cheating?" she asked.

"For instance, who did the cheating for Mu Yanming, how did you get in touch with them, and whether there was a middleman—friend, relative, or professional. If Mu Yanming managed to enter the exam hall successfully, did anyone facilitate this? You need to provide a detailed statement at the police station," the officer explained.

Taking a deep breath, Wang Fengsong replied, "I don’t even remember who helped Yanming with the exam. It was my cousin’s wife who arranged it. You’ll have to ask her; I truly don’t know anything about it."

"Understood. Our team will follow up with her, but for now, you need to come with us," the officer said, remaining formal.

Wang Fengsong didn’t resist and left with them, though her eyes glimmered with a hint of mockery as she lowered her gaze. The Wang family was cowardly and selfish. Until the stick of punishment hit them, they wouldn’t understand the pain.

Since they had chosen to distance themselves, she would make sure they felt the consequences. This way, they would no longer look at her and the Mu family with contempt.

Back at the Mu residence, the family watched Wang Fengsong being taken away with dark expressions. Many neighbors had heard the commotion and came out to witness the spectacle, but before anyone could ask questions, Grandma Cui quickly shut the door in embarrassment.

They all settled into their seats, silence hanging heavily for over ten minutes. Finally, it was Mu Xiaowei’s brother-in-law who broke the silence, asking, "Big brother, aren’t you going to do anything?"

"I can’t," Mu Xiaowei sighed.

Mu Yuqing immediately grew anxious upon hearing this. "Big brother, how can you just ignore this?! With your position now, you could at least force a meeting with the higher-ups!"

"What nonsense are you talking about? Just because I’m in this position doesn’t mean I can meet with the big leaders whenever I want. In the five or six years I’ve held this role, I’ve never met them," Mu Xiaowei replied, feeling frustrated.

"Just because you haven’t seen the leaders doesn’t mean you’re incapable of navigating this! If you had been more proactive, you might have heard about this issue sooner and avoided this mess," Mu Zhuqian retorted angrily. She felt her older brother, despite his skills, was rigid in his thinking. If only he were more flexible, they might have been able to prevent this disaster.

"Regardless of what you say, I can’t help now. I’ve already informed the higher-ups about our family’s situation, and I’ve temporarily stepped down. We can’t decide how to handle this until the investigation concludes," Mu Xiaowei stated, resignation evident in his tone.

Hearing this, the rest of the family’s eyes widened in fear and anger. "Big brother! You can’t be so selfish! You have the ability to help your own son, yet you refuse because you don’t like your sister-in-law? How can you abandon your own child like this?" Mu Yuqing exclaimed, incredulous.

Mu Zhuqian added, "Mu Xiaowei, this isn’t just your family’s Mu family! Have you considered the feelings of your sister and me? Do you think anyone will praise you for this? They’ll just laugh at you for being a selfish fool."

"Say whatever you want; I can’t help with this," Mu Xiaowei said, unfazed by their disappointment. This situation had escalated, and it was better for him to withdraw now. If they were bound to be punished, he would rather lower their profile and avoid exacerbating the problem.

"Mu Xiaowei, are you trying to kill me? We had an agreement!" Grandma Cui yelled, feeling dizzy with anger.

After a few more words of scorn, she collapsed back onto the sofa. Mu Xiaowei hurried over to help her, but she pushed him away.

"I don’t want your fake filial piety!" she shouted.

Mu Xiaowei had no choice but to retreat a step, standing aside to avoid stressing her further. Once Grandma Cui calmed down a bit, he said, "If I step back, it might protect the Mu family a little. You can’t accuse me of being selfish. I said nineteen years ago that I wanted a divorce from Wang Fengsong. I don’t care about my future, but you keep pushing me to keep her in the family for the sake of the Mu family’s position. This is the price you pay for keeping Wang Fengsong. Since you made this choice, we’ll bear the consequences together."

With that, Mu Xiaowei turned away, heading upstairs.

Mu Zhuqian, furious, shouted after him, "You insisted on marrying her despite us advising you against it. If you hadn’t married this disaster, we wouldn’t be in this situation today! She bore you a son, and yet you want to leave her for your own reasons. Don’t you think that’s even more selfish?"

Mu Xiaowei stumbled slightly at her words but remained silent. He simply walked heavier steps toward the study.
