Chapter 53: Cabins

Kain Locke

We had to keep moving or those people were going to get us.

That’s what we did, we moved through the collapsed building, legs weaving through the bushes, the taller ones clinging to our shirt and trousers as we moved.

Kael has little to no strength in his body, therefore him still managing to walk now was due to the fact that I was wrapping my hand around his not only tall but also broad shoulders, yeah, you can imagine how uncomfortable that was for me as his weight was dragging on my shoulder, but I gritted my teeth and kept going. His breath was ragged, coming in short, painful gasps. I didn’t need to look to know his wound was bleeding again. I could feel the warmth of it seeping through my sleeve.

And to actually think I thought the cold water did a good on it, I mean the blood stopped earlier right? Or was it due to the cold? Can icy water freezes blood? Besides, the blood from them clotted on his forehead, so that should mean something right? And now it’s gushing out again.

I didn’t go to any school, needless to say a university, or medical school, except elementary, the very life I had before this.

And now that I’m thinking about this, he got hit in the head by some heavy stuff I couldn’t see clearly, and then he got a large wound on his forehead where blood was rushing out fast, we got trapped in the water and had to swim to the land where he grew increasingly weak...

The most bothersome question now is, was he already on something? Or was it just the loss of blood that made him go unconscious, snapped out of it and went again.

This theory is... I don’t just know.

I guess I should look that up later, that’s if we somehow survive tonight.

And the matter right now was only getting worse and worse, because the distant dogs barking was now getting closer.

Certainly, whoever had the leash in their palms was running, and the dogs were leading them straight to us.

Judging by the odds, we’re definitely going to be find out by them, there’s simply no place to serve as a coverage here,

Therefore, I tightened my grip around him, practically dragging him forward. If he collapsed here, we were screwed.

Hiding?

I’ve thought about that as well, but it was out of the question, the ruins weren’t safe, and if the dogs didn’t find us, something else might. Like poisonous snakes or bugs.. who knows if something much worse could be found here?

And if we were to be caught by them, I have different guesses of what they’re going to do with us, trust me, none of them are pleasant so we had to keep moving,

"Stay with me," I muttered, shaking Kael’s shoulder slightly to see his reaction. However, only his head lolled forward,

Damn it. He’s out again,

I forced my legs to move faster, ignoring the burn in my muscles. Then, through the darkness, I saw a clearing up ahead. A small group of houses, old but standing, I never knew something like this could be found in a ruin, because it’s a ruin! Meaning no one was supposed to be there, so why are there houses?

Well that shouldn’t matter now..

So I let out a sharp breath, tightening my hold on Kael. His steps were getting slower, heavier. His body slumped against mine more with each one.

"Come on," I urged. "Just a little more. We’re almost there"

The barking was dangerously close now. So close I could hear the rustling of footsteps coming closer.

And my bad luck, out of all time, came out to play its role, because Kael, who I was trying to get to one of the houses, decided now was the best time to give out as he collapsed.

"Shit!" I stumbled but managed to catch him before he hit the ground.

Panic clawed at my throat. I didn’t have time to patronize this as I crouched almost immediately, forcing his arm over my shoulder, and pulled him up again. He groaned softly but didn’t fight me.

He regained consciousness again,

"There," I breathed, glancing at the small houses ahead. "You gotta calm down so I can get you there."

His lips pressed into a thin line, he said nothing, neither nod,

I didn’t know what the hell was going on anymore. All I knew was that I couldn’t let go of him. Not here, after all he asked me to trust him before we left the party, although I wouldn’t do a foolish thing as trusting a Draeven, but I have no choice but to trust him at this instance, because if anyone could give any reasonable explanation to any of this, it’s him.

Gritting my teeth, I dragged him forward, his weight pressing heavy against me, and I could feel the warmth of his blood soaking through my sleeve. The trail we were leaving behind was a damn invitation for them to find us.

We’re now close to the houses that looked like a cabins,

My eyes darted ahead, locking onto a small house. It looked old, barely holding itself together with the dark planks that have definitely seen good days, so far it was still standing.

That was all that mattered,

Thus, I pushed forward, ignoring the burning in my legs. The moment we reached the door, I didn’t waste any second as my hand came in contact hard against it once, twice, thrice... then I waited.

But there wasn’t a voice answering with something like who’s that? Or who’s out there?

Does that mean this place is empty?

If it turns out to be, then I’ll have no choice but to break in.

However before I could kick it open, there came sounds like footsteps, but very slow like something was being dragged on the floorboards.

A chill ran down my spine. Something about it felt...off.

The door creaked open, revealing an old woman holding a lamp. This type hasn’t been seen in ages which makes me wonder, were they living in the reverse timeline here?

Her face was lined with deep wrinkles, but her eyes were sharp, too damn sharp, she studied me for a moment like she was peeling back our skin and seeing what was underneath.

Then when her eyes landed on Kael, her mouth finally fell open, only a few words came out, "What are you doing here by this time of the night? Who are you... And what’s wrong with him?" she questioned cautiously.

I swallowed, glancing behind me, the barking grew louder. Almost here, so there basically was no time.

I turned back to the woman, gripping Kael tighter. My voice came out rough as I answered desperately,

"Please. Help us."
