Chapter 59 -59 “Hunger”_1
“Let’s get moving.”
Colin sniffed the air, detecting various scents, and could clearly sense the presence of Beast Transformation Syndrome all over the city.
The number was growing more and more.
Moreover, due to the ongoing ritual, the Beast Transformation Syndrome had become stronger than usual.
When he reached the former City Lord’s home, Colin immediately ordered the questioning of the church officials from the Holy Healing Church who had just fled with him.
Soon, he learned some news.
“The infection mechanism of ‘Beastification’ is still unclear, but one thing is certain; it’s very likely to erupt in people who feel extremely hungry and can’t find food.”
“Therefore, ‘Beastification’ mostly happens outside the city, and only a small part inside, because as long as there is enough food to fill the stomach, the probability of illness is low.”
“And under this extreme hunger, if emotions run high, like rage, then the possibility of an outbreak is even higher.”
Extreme hunger plus intense negative emotions?
Colin hadn’t expected the symptoms to erupt so simply, and he now understood why it was usually said to only break out among the poorer populations.
Because only those who couldn’t satisfy their hunger would face such trouble.
“It targets the weak, no wonder the ‘Book of Fate’ mentioned a massive outbreak of Beast Transformation Syndrome among the refugees outside the city tomorrow…”
Colin sat in a room in the castle, sighed, and looked at the Holy Healing Church officials tied up by the soldiers:
“Besides that, what exactly is ‘Beastification’? Is it something you are spreading?”
“No, we’re not sure where it came from either. Besides hunger, coming into contact with too much blood from Beast Transformation Syndrome patients, or accidentally allowing it to seep into wounds, can also lead to infection, as happened to Father Laurenson.”
“So, according to you, as long as people are well-fed, a large-scale outbreak of ‘Beastification’ can be prevented?”
“Yes, if people are not hungry, the likelihood of infection will be reduced.”
Hearing this, Colin paused for a moment and then turned to Warden Calder: “How many more days can the city’s food supply last?”
“If all the food in the city were collected and provided only to the people in the castle, even if we add another ten thousand people, it could last at least half a month…”
Colin waved his hand to cut him off: “No, I mean the entire Black Stone City as well as the refugees outside.”
“Then… if distributed smoothly, about a week.”
After a pause, Warden Calder added, “But that’s almost impossible, there are tens of thousands of people in the city, and nearly as many outside…”
He implied that such a massive distribution task could not possibly go well on the spot.
Having participated in various punitive campaigns and been responsible for logistics, Calder knew very well that such distribution was extremely difficult.
There would surely be people hoarding food, there would be uneven distribution…
If those inside knew that their food was being allocated to the undesirable refugees outside the city, it would only trigger a terrible riot.
Moreover, the constant fear imposed by “Beastification” would only add to the chaos.
“This is troublesome. If we can’t distribute the food well, and if those people all turn into beasts, we probably won’t be able to withstand it…”
Colin couldn’t help but pinch the bridge of his nose, as he was not familiar with this sort of thing and could not provide effective advice.
He also hadn’t expected that in dealing with these ‘Beastification’ cases, his biggest problem wouldn’t be how to kill them, but the shortage of supplies.
If handled poorly and famine ensued, it would directly lead to a large-scale outbreak of “Beastification.”
This thing, one or two might not be so bad…
But once the numbers increased, and considering there was no escape, it would be a deadlock situation.
“Do your best, while ensuring our own food supply.”
Pausing momentarily, Helena added, “The conversations here are strictly forbidden from being leaked. If I find out, I will hang whoever is responsible.”
“Now, have those soldiers start going out to collect food, and stop any gluttonous behavior with the severest of measures.”
“Yes.”
Warden Calder said nothing more. Under normal circumstances, he would certainly try to push these troublesome matters onto others.
But at such a time, he too was deeply involved, and he was indeed a ‘tall man’.
So, he was even less inclined to entrust the matter to anyone else.
He had already attempted to send people outside the city to try, and now it was truly sealed off, with no escape possible.
“Rest assured, once this crisis is over, I will ask my father to convey your achievements to His Majesty the King and have you made a member of the ‘Virtue Knights’.”
“Yes.”

Calder nodded, took his leave with a quick stride.
“I’ll go too.”
Colin was somewhat uneasy and followed, intending to see how they would handle the situation.
If he didn’t take action, he would feel a strong sense of unease.
It was as if he could feel the Holy Healing Church’s entity constantly watching him…
“Your Excellency, are you certain that after seven days, the situation will truly take a turn for the better?” Calder couldn’t help but ask out of skepticism, as he honestly doubted the claim.
Because he really couldn’t imagine any way to deal with the creature that might have been summoned by an ancient god summoning ritual.
But… it seemed that the man before him was the only exception since “Beastification” had begun to appear.
His case was just as mysterious…
After escaping from the dungeon, he inexplicably returned, and then miraculously reverted to his normal human form.
He then began to speak as though he was the savior, claiming that the crisis would be resolved within a few days.
Honestly, if it wasn’t for Helena, a noble heir vouching for him, Colin would have seemed the most suspicious.
According to him, if they just waited a few days, in an unrestricted situation, the entity within the church might fully descend.
At that time, there would be nothing that could stop it.
Everybody would die, without exception!
Better to try and fight while they still had the chance.
“I can’t tell you the specifics, but you just need to believe that when the time comes, the problem will be effectively resolved,” said Colin, who himself did not dare to make promises too confidently.
He was unclear on how the Bonfire Company planned to intervene, unsure whether they would deal with the issue directly or once again use him as a means to solve it.
One thing he was certain of was that in a few days, he would be able to return to reality.
Then, he needed to rush to consult his colleagues at the company: in an era of cold weapons, how to deal with a terrestrial creature likely larger than a blue whale.
And then, during those seven days, he should work hard to improve himself, possibly acquiring some lethal weapons.
Before long, a thousand soldiers within the castle were divided into over a dozen teams, moving throughout various parts of the city.
Their single purpose was to collect food.
Meanwhile, Colin took a group of people loaded with a large quantity of food, heading straight for the city gates, planning to start by attempting to address the refugee problem outside the city.
