Chapter 40 -40: Dry Mouth and Parched Tongue
Emily Hill just stared blankly at the somewhat strange-looking Carolline Ruiz, who tried very hard to restrain herself. Still, Emily managed to notice her odd expression, which seemed overly cunning.
“Who did you meet with yesterday?” Since Emily knows most of Carolline’s friends, as a mother, she was genuinely unsure which friend of Carolline’s could make her so nervous.
“…Someone you don’t know.” Carolline paused, then gave a vague answer. This was the first time Emily had pursued her inquiries so relentlessly.
“…” Emily was now frustrated but chose not to pry further into who could have made Carolline lie to her. Considering Carolline’s reluctance to answer, she decided not to push the matter further.

“Okay, I won’t force you to tell me. You should go back to your room and get some rest. Aren’t you on the night shift tonight? What would you like for dinner? I’ll make it for you.” Emily generously let her off the hook.
“I love anything you make, Mom. You can cook whatever you want.” Carolline knew how fortunate she was to live in such a happy family, where her parents never pressured her and were always so flexible.
She felt incredibly at ease at home, living her life as she pleased.
Although Emily pushed her a bit on the matchmaking front, Carolline didn’t see it as an issue. After all, every child eventually grows up and starts a family of their own.
Now that she was married – albeit, secretly – she indeed had a husband. But how was she going to have children?
Bryan Hawkins said they were in a hidden marriage, but not a fake one. Since she had accepted his house key and Xavier Estrada was going to sort out her cards, did that imply they would become intimate?
Thinking about that made Carolline feel parched and feverish, her whole body heating up. She felt somewhat ashamed of her thoughts, given that she had just turned 20 and her mind was already so corrupted.
However, it wasn’t her fault. Young as she was, the things she encountered at her age were much different from those years ago. Even teenagers were likely very knowledgeable in certain areas, though not necessarily in practice but at least in theory.
Carolline cleared her head of these messy thoughts. Despite having only eaten an apple for lunch, she was too excited to feel hungry on this special day.
It was not just hunger that escaped her but many other sensations, too. All she could think about was Bryan Hawkins’ face and the red booklet she had hidden.
After a two-hour nap, Carolline, who could usually sleep through anything, woke up. That was why she had chosen to be a nurse instead of a surgeon. If she were a doctor, her ability to sleep through anything would likely have led to many problems.
After having dinner, Henry Ruiz and Emily Hill went for a walk. Carolline stayed home and watched TV, then headed straight to the Surgical Nurse Station from home at 7:30 p.m.
She changed and took over the shift, even letting someone leave 20 minutes early. Thus, Carolline had a decent reputation, as she was always good to others, despite her father’s high standing in the hospital.
That night, Avery Graham was also on duty. Only after a while did she learn that Carolline was Caden Ruiz’s daughter. Although she had previously looked down on her, she dared not underestimate her now.
Even though Avery had studied nursing for five years and Carolline only three, they had been working together for nearly a month, and Avery knew that Carolline’s expertise was no worse than hers, despite her lower education level.
Avery wanted to work closely with Caden Ruiz and learn more from him, so she made a special effort to please Carolline.
“Carolline, you came early today?” Avery arrived close to eight o’clock, and aside from Carolline, she didn’t pay much attention to any of the other five new nurses.
“Yeah, you’re on shift tonight too?” Carolline looked up and smiled at her. Their monthly shifts differed, and they only learned the schedule for the next month on the last day of each month.
“I bought some barbecue, join me.” Avery put a large box of barbecue in front of Carolline, filled with her favorite grilled treats.
There were ribs, chicken shiitake mushrooms, and even more veggies like lotus root and potato slices, and mushrooms. Another item was a crucian carp, clearly meant for Avery herself to eat.
Carolline knew Avery loved fish.
Carolline also enjoyed barbecue, but since her father rarely allowed her to indulge, she only ate it about once a month.
She picked up a rib to chew on, just as a call came in. She quickly put the rib down, glanced at the caller ID, and picked up the phone, running to a quiet corner to answer it.
“Hello.” Carolline pressed the answer key, her voice light and trembling. She was overly cautious.
“Where are you? Are you not free to speak?” After a day of work and an evening reception, Bryan Hawkins made an excuse to go to the restroom and called Carolline during his break.
“Not inconvenient. I’m on the night shift.” Carolline replied honestly, “How about you? Have you eaten yet?”
“Yeah, I’m eating now.” Bryan smirked. “Have you been to the villa yet? If there’s anything you’re unsatisfied with, let Xavier Estrada know, and he’ll arrange a designer to redecorate.”
“I haven’t been yet. You know, it’s too far from where I work.” Bluen Lake Wonderland was located outside the Third Ring, far from the City District, so even if she drove to and from work, it would be too inconvenient.
“Right, you should go take a look when you have time off. I’ll probably be in R Country for a while but hope to be back before the Mid-Autumn Festival.” Bryan quickly explained his plan to Carolline.
“Okay, go ahead with what you’re doing.” Carolline nodded.
“Alright.” Bryan ended the call swiftly.
After hanging up, Carolline stood there, lost in thought, oblivious to a middle-aged woman who had been complaining outside the nurse station for at least five minutes. No one had responded, and her voice grew louder and louder, but Carolline was too absorbed in her thoughts to notice.
Avery, who was in the restroom, heard the commotion and hurried out after quickly washing her hands. “I’m here, I’m here. I’m sorry.”
“Sorry? What are you nurses doing during the night shift? Time to change the dressing for bed 16!” The middle-aged woman was extremely dissatisfied. However, changing the dressing was more important at this point, so she didn’t argue further and placed her request first.
“Alright, I’ll be right there.” Avery smiled apologetically and quickly went to the workshop to prepare.
Turning around, the middle-aged woman saw Carolline in her white coat standing there, holding her phone and smiling foolishly.
The woman had been yelling for at least five minutes, but Carolline, who was so close, failed to hear any of it. The realization infuriated the middle-aged woman, who then stormed towards Carolline.
