Chapter 71 -71: Three People Confrontation

Bryan Hawkins stood there, engrossed in a conversation with the arriving manager, oblivious of the eye exchange between Matilda Ferguson and Carolline Ruiz. The fact that Matilda Ferguson could cling to him was merely due to customary courtesy.

They had previously encountered each other at an event, and somehow, Matilda switched places with the woman next to him, which now fell to her.

If it were a private occasion, he would have naturally rejected her, yet he found it hard to refuse in that situation, allowing her to take his arm.

When Matilda gripped his hand tightly, he felt it, but being absorbed in his conversation, only thought of asking her to let go after finishing speaking with the manager. As he looked around, he saw Matilda focused on the second floor. Following her gaze, he caught sight of Carolline walking away.

He was surprised. He hadn’t expected the Ruiz family dinner to be held in his hotel. The moment Carolline turned her back, he felt a sense of abandonment from her.

There were reporters and photographers following behind, yet at that moment, Bryan didn’t care. Without notifying Matilda or the people tailing him, Bryan shrugged her off and rushed towards the spiral staircase, swiftly heading for the second floor. He didn’t know what Carolline had seen, but he felt the need to explain and he must do so.

He had said that they were in a hidden marriage, not a fake one. Hence, she had every right to question him. Yet, this foolish girl left the scene upon seeing that, which made Bryan feel a surge of anger.

Matilda could only watch in astonishment as Bryan ran in the direction Carolline went; she never expected him to leave her to chase after Carolline. Looking in the direction from where Carolline disappeared, she clenched her teeth in hatred.

Carolline didn’t hold a gaze with Matilda for long before leaving. She hadn’t expected that her taking a breather would lead to witnessing such a scene. She was willing to trust Bryan, so she didn’t care about Matilda’s provocation.

Yet, to say it didn’t pain her, didn’t make her feel uncomfortable, would be a lie. Why would those two be together in such a way? Carolline wanted to know but couldn’t just confront Bryan about it.

After all, if she acted on impulse, their hidden relationship would probably be exposed.

Before she had gone far, Carolline saw Simon Carrington coming. She felt a bit uneasy seeing him follow her out so heedlessly, especially considering her current emotional state.

“What happened? One minute you’re out for fresh air, the next you look upset?” Simon, noticing Bryan standing at the stairs, teasingly asked Carolline.

Men have intuition, too. Although he wasn’t sure about the relationship between Carolline and the standing man, he couldn’t rule out that she might be upset because of him. But since the man kept staring at Carolline and himself, he was confident they at least knew each other.

Therefore, he smiled warmly at Carolline, and as anticipated, the man’s face tightened. Without a moment of hesitation, the man started walking towards them.

“Oh, nothing. Why are you out here too?” With already one misunderstanding, the presence of Simon only made it harder for her to explain.

Before Simon could reply, Bryan had already reached them. He naturally heard Carolline’s last sentence and directly called out to her, “Carolline, is your family dining here?”

“…Yes, what a coincidence.” Carolline looked back at Bryan, seeing him so easygoing, and thinking back to the scene she had just witnessed, she felt awkward and responded in the same manner.

Bryan was waiting for Carolline to introduce Simon, but Carolline had no intention of doing so.

There was a brief standoff among the three. Simon intentionally didn’t introduce himself, observing the fleeting facial expressions to analyze their relationship.

His final conclusion was that these two must have some unusual relationship. The man Carolline had feelings for was probably him.

He couldn’t help but take a few more glances at Bryan. This man, either in appearance or demeanor, made him feel pressured. For the first time, Simon thought he was completely lacking confidence in front of such a man.

So there was such an outstanding man beside Carolline, no wonder she ignored him ever since his arrival.

After waiting for a while, Bryan saw Carolline did not introduce the man next to her. Seeing that she didn’t want to talk right now, he took the initiative to speak, “In that case, I should go toast your family.”

If not for the coincidence, he wouldn’t have done it, but now he had to pay his respects.

“Wait, you…” Carolline hurriedly tried to stop him. Since she had agreed to a hidden marriage, she did not want him to do this. With what identity would he toast? She already had enough trouble dealing with Simon; she would have a bigger headache if Bryan joined in.

“Rest assured, nothing will happen.” Bryan knew what Carolline was trying to say. He turned to Simon and asked, “You don’t mind, right?”

“…I don’t mind. I’m just a guest of Mr. Ruiz.” Simon barely managed a smile. Restraining his frustration, he lowered his status. He knew that, in Carolline’s eyes, his role was just that – nothing more.

“Oh? Is that so.” Bryan raised an eyebrow, “Carolline, wait here for me. I’ll be right back.”

Carolline wanted to say something, but Bryan whirled around and left like the wind. She wanted to call him to stop, but she knew she couldn’t. Seeing Bryan walking away, she felt a lingering attachment.

She didn’t know in what identity Bryan was going to toast her family. However, for some reason, she found herself looking forward to it.
