Chapter 193: Chapter 193: Interests First, Feelings Second

Spencer Sawyer furiously shoved open the main door of the Sutton residence, using so much force it nearly broke the hinges.

On a cabinet in the entryway, an expensive blue-and-white porcelain vase wobbled from the thunderous crash of the door hitting the wall, nearly falling to the floor.

The twilight cast mottled shadows across his face, but it couldn’t hide the black storm raging in his eyes.

In the living room, Stella Sinclair was lounging on an Italian leather sofa, laughing at a variety show on a massive projection screen.

She was dressed in silk loungewear, and the rose tea on the coffee table beside her was still steaming.

She looked completely at ease.

Seeing Spencer Sawyer burst through the door, Stella Sinclair shot to her feet, a guilty yet surprised look on her face.

"You’re back early from your business trip?"

"Have you eaten?"

"If not, I can have the staff make something."

Spencer Sawyer’s eyes were filled with disgust and loathing. "Still putting on an act, even now?"

Stella Sinclair feigned ignorance. "What act? I’m not an actress. I’m genuinely concerned about you."

Spencer Sawyer remained unmoved, his expression as cold and devoid of warmth as ever.

"I’m not in the mood to beat around the bush. You know damn well what you did. I’ll ask you this: who gave you permission to enter my study?"

Stella Sinclair’s heart skipped a beat, and her eyes darted away.

’It looks like Spencer came straight from Amberwood Estates,’ she thought. ’He saw the state of the study.’

"I... I just wanted to help you tidy up the study."

"Tidy up?"

With a cold expression, Spencer Sawyer advanced two steps, his intimidating presence washing over her.

It was the first time Stella had seen such a menacing look on his face. She grew a little scared and guiltily backed away, bumping her shin on the edge of the coffee table. She cried out in pain before forcing herself to say, "That’s right. Tidying up."

"Stella Sinclair!" Spencer Sawyer seethed, glaring at her shameless act.

"You are the most shameless woman I have ever met. The study is a complete disaster. All the books from the shelves are scattered on the floor, and my collection of art and antiques is smashed to pieces. Is that what you call ’tidying up’?! You’ve got some nerve."

With the truth exposed, Stella’s face flushed with shame and anger. A flood of words she’d been holding back came pouring out.

"Spencer Sawyer, don’t you dare go too far! I haven’t done anything to wrong you. What right do you have to call me shameless? Is it just because I discovered your secret in the study?"

"If you don’t want people to know, you shouldn’t do it in the first place. You’re the one who did something shady, using a business trip as an excuse to visit a postpartum center. That letter I found in your study is all the proof I need. I didn’t even know her name, but you wrote it out, stroke by stroke, and confessed your feelings to her."

The more Stella spoke, the more agitated she became. Her heart felt as if it were being sliced by a knife, and her eyes reddened as tears welled up.

"No woman would tolerate her husband doing something like this! How is it any different from cheating? You call me shameless, but aren’t you shameless, too?"

Spencer Sawyer’s expression didn’t change.

He didn’t consider his actions to be cheating.

’Doesn’t everyone have a secret crush hidden in their heart?’ He had written down the words he never said, sealed them in a book, just to have a memento, a way to find closure for himself.

"Nothing inappropriate happened between Wren Sutton and me. I went to the postpartum center to see her because we were classmates, and also because I was a student of her mother’s."

"Because of a letter from years ago, you had your mother go to the postpartum center and cause a scene, making everyone think Wren Sutton is a homewrecker. She just gave birth, how could she handle that kind of blow! You’re a truly venomous woman."

Consumed with rage, Stella shrieked, her voice tearing from her throat, "Even if nothing physical happened, it’s an undeniable fact that you love her! Don’t you dare deny it!"

The fire in Spencer Sawyer’s heart burned even hotter.

"That’s right. I love Wren Sutton, because in my heart, she is the perfect woman."

"So, I’m warning you. If you ever dare to do anything to hurt her again, you will be my enemy, and I, Spencer Sawyer, will not let it go."

The words had barely left his mouth when Stella, unable to bear it any longer, raised her hand and slapped him hard across the face. Tears streamed from her eyes.

"Spencer Sawyer, you have no heart! I’m your wife, yet you’re making an enemy of me for an outsider!"

Spencer Sawyer stood still, taking the slap. He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, his gaze as cold as a blade quenched in ice.

"You should be glad I don’t hit women."

Just then, a noise came from the top of the stairs. Ms. Dawson was walking down, her expression grim and cold.

"What, are you going to hit her back?"

Spencer Sawyer’s intimidating aura didn’t diminish in the slightest.

"I don’t make a habit of hitting women."

Ms. Dawson walked up to him, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides.

"If it weren’t for Mr. Sutton, I’d slap you again myself."

"My daughter has never been wronged like this in her entire life. Is this how you act as a husband?"

Her question was met with a cold reply from Spencer Sawyer.

"Since this is a marriage of convenience, business comes first and feelings second. How I act as a husband is none of your concern, Mother-in-law. If you think I’m unfit, then let’s get a divorce. I’m free anytime to sign the papers and go to the Civil Affairs Bureau to finalize it."

Hearing this, Ms. Dawson flew into a rage. "You bastard! Are you even listening to yourself? Is that something a human being would say?"

Spencer Sawyer didn’t respond or explain. He simply turned and walked away.

"Stop."

Ms. Dawson’s voice was sharp as she called out to him.

"You’ve wronged Maya. You haven’t said a single word of apology since you walked in this door, and now you think you can just leave?!"

Spencer Sawyer stopped but didn’t turn around, only tilting his head slightly to the side.

"You go apologize to Wren Sutton at the postpartum center first, then I’ll come here and apologize to Stella Sinclair."

"You..."

"Mother-in-law, before I go, let me make one thing clear. Don’t go looking for trouble with Wren Sutton again. Otherwise, I won’t be so polite to you, either."

After he finished speaking, Spencer Sawyer slammed the door shut with a BANG and sped away in his car.

Stella Sinclair was sobbing so hard she could barely breathe, the pain in her heart nearly suffocating her.

Ms. Dawson didn’t have time to comfort her daughter. She took out her phone and dialed the Sawyer family’s number.

"I can’t just swallow this. The Sawyer family needs to know what a despicable thing Spencer Sawyer has done."

Before Stella Sinclair could stop her, the call connected.

...

Spencer Sawyer was speeding down the empty highway.

He gripped the steering wheel tightly, the resentment and rage in his heart not subsiding, but growing stronger.

’I already compromised and made a sacrifice by marrying Stella Sinclair,’ he thought. ’Why do they keep pushing me?’

"Spencer Sawyer, you’re useless."

He slammed his fist against his head, then slapped himself across the face.

’I can’t spend the rest of my life with the person I love, and I even got her dragged into this, subjected to insults and slander. Now it’s hard to even see her once.’

Spencer Sawyer kept accelerating until the car felt like it was about to take flight.

Just as he was about to lose control completely, his phone rang.

Spencer Sawyer hung up.

Less than five seconds later, it rang again.

He glanced at it, annoyed, and saw it was the butler. After a moment’s hesitation, he answered.

"Young Master, it’s terrible! The Madam has fainted."
