Chapter 23: System Dynamics (Pt. 2)

"Hehehe! It’s not some kind of heavenly magic, or maybe it is. There’s a big secret about it."

"Am I gonna have to wait to hear this one, too?" Syril inquired exasperatedly.

"No. This time, you’ve earned it. I mentioned something about passive abilities, yeah?"

"Yes!" Syril yelled, his patience running thin.

"It feels so good to see you react like this," Raja giggled. "As I was saying, those passive abilities work behind the scenes, rendering special services for the system’s user. You can see them as buffs, bonuses from the system..."

"One of them is the healing ability. A special buff that heals your injuries. But..." He paused for dramatic effect. "It takes a toll on you. It relies on your Health Point (HP). Every healing means a decrease in your HP. If you noticed, when you woke and checked your stats for the first time, your HP was low. After recuperating, it went back to its previous point."

"Wow. That’s..." Syril murmured, trailing off at the end.

"A lot, right?!" Raja completed.

"It still doesn’t explain how those stats increased."

"I’m glad you’re following," Raja replied, proceeding to explain further. "Another buff or passive ability we know is what I like to call "Sex Bonus.""

"What the fuck is that?! That’s a dumb name." Syril didn’t bother hiding his irritation.

Raja dismissed his complaint and continued. "When you have sex, the system randomly picks one of your stats and increases it. The amount of points or the choice of stat is entirely dependent on the system. However..."

Another dramatic pause.

"There’s a limit. You can’t start seducing and having sex with many girls in attempts to grow stronger. The system chooses when to give the bonus no matter how many times you fuck."

Syril heaved another long sigh, trying to process this new one, too.

Raja didn’t let up. More catches.

"There are numerous buffs for you, Syril, but you’ll find them all out by yourself. One way or the other, unlocking some after reaching a milestone. I want you to keep in mind that these buffs can’t be improved or upgraded like stats you see, and some might have cons, like temporary decreases in their related stat points..."

"Like the healing buff?" Syril cut in, grasping the idea before Raja landed.

"Yes," Raja responded "And lastly, they work naturally and passively."

Syril was now resting against the backrest, staring blankly into the ceiling. He understood all Raja said, but one thing bugged him so much he had to keep mute for seconds.

He stood up suddenly and started circling his small sitting room, pacing forth and back.

"Why..." He said, staring at the system’s screen. "Why is it keeping relevant details like these?"

"Oh, boy..." Raja sighed. "The system is not stingy with information, if that’s what you’re trying to say. You see... knowledge is power. And power comes with price, knowledge does, too. If you have all of the details in possession, there’s no telling of what you can do. Stupid choices, irrational decisions, over-confidence..."

"It’ll outright reduce your value for the system. You won’t see the system the right way you ought to see it, thinking all of the power you wield is rightfully yours, and no one comes close..."

"You’ll probably become a villain, look down on people who treated you well, turn against your loved ones," Raja sighed again, his tone taking that distant edge again, as if reminiscing. "I’ve seen this happen before... Power like this is too great to wield at once. The only way you can value it is striving for it. Every milestone means greater power. Your mind needs to be ready for that..."

"And that only comes through strife."

Syril’s leg wobbled from nothing but the blatant truth Raja just told him. It was a direct blow to his face, honest and brutal.

He immediately started evaluating himself, thinking how greedy he had been. He just got a new ability, with powers that would put him above everyone in a matter of time. Yet, he was coveting greater knowledge, more power.

He went back to his cushioned sofa, mentally injured, pondering aloud.

"This is exactly what those rich bastards do... Born into great families with great abilities, they feel on top of the world, looking down on average people, stepping on others’ toes because they think no one can rival them..."

"Exactly! Now, you’re getting the fact. Most of them are like this because they didn’t pay the necessary price. Everything came on a golden platter for them, thus, that perception of overpoweringness," Raja explained further, finishing Syril’s statement.

"And I’ve been trailing that perilous path..." Syril muttered to himself.

The next set of questions were not for Raja, but himself.

’What if I become that kind of person?’

’What if I turn against my loved ones?’

’What if I hurt them in my pursuit of power?’

’Will those beautiful eyes that once read inexplicable love look at me the same way?’

’What if I turn my back against those that supported me with everything?’

Syril couldn’t find answers, just emptiness that felt worse than having answers.

Why? He couldn’t think of doing that. He couldn’t fathom such gruesome possibilities.

Yet, the probability of it happening wasn’t zero. It just might happen.

Just might.

"Now, relax," Raja’s words slid into his consciousness, disrupting those dark thoughts. "You’re not one of ’em. You’re not like ’em. The capability to think of these and reflect on yourself proves that."

"Those kinds of people become blind from the beginning, incapable of reflecting on themselves, destined for self-destruction. Besides, that’s why the system is meticulous in handling these things, and also why I’m here. Rest assured, you’ll be good..."

Another catch.

"As long as you know what you’re doing, as long as ya keep your actions and decisions in check. As long as you can reflect on yourself," Raja finished.

A warning or advice? Who could tell?

Syril felt a hard lump in his throat, hard enough to prevent gulping (still figuratively).

You’re asking why?

Because our young Syril Sylvester was thinking again.

’What if I start failing to consider my actions and decisions? What if I stop reflecting on myself?’

But all of that didn’t matter now, because Raja had more to say, more to tell him.

"You wanna know more about why I think you’re not like them? You wanna know why the system chose you? You wanna know the purpose of the system? Let me tell you..."
