"Why him?" Kenneth tightened his clutch on his hair until he pulled out a few strands of his splendid blond hair. The discomfort that he was feeling in his heart kept on growing exponentially until it became too unbearable for him.

He covered his face with his palm and kept on muttering to himself, "That man did unthinkable things to my mother, didn’t he? He put her through hell, didn’t he?"

Kenneth was already well aware of how awful Reginald was. Reginald’s infamous reputation crossed the continental boundaries after all.

And to think that somehow his mother fell into the hands of such a monster pained him to a great degree. To add to that, he couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that he was the seed of that very monster. It added salt to his injury.

While Kenneth almost looked as though he was writhing in agony, Damien excused himself and stepped out to comfort his friend… or should we say his newly found half-brother?

He sat beside Kenneth on the porch. And when Kenneth faced the other way and began to sniffle, he asked while making a light joke about the situation, "Are you that mad to find out that you turned out to be my half-brother?"

Kenneth scoffed through his pain and mumbled, "Right… We are half-brothers now… I hadn’t even realized that yet."

"Well, now you do." Damien smacked his lips and heaved a sigh.

And when Kenneth finally turned to face him again with a pitiable look on his face, he said in a rather serious tone, "I know what must be going on in your head right now. I once felt that way too."

Kenneth frowned a little because that wasn’t comforting at all. He asked Damien after a short pause, "How did you feel when you found out that you were his son? Did you also feel as if you were… dirty? As if you want to rip off some parts of you and burn them away?"

Damien looked at the beautiful garden that was in front of him. His eyes dilated when one of the most traumatic events of his life began flashing before his eyes.

He clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles began to turn white. And he was grinding his teeth so hard that his gums started to hurt.

Slowly, he released his clenched jaw and started to mumble, "At first I didn’t know any better. I blamed Prince Theodore and even Ary for his death."

He looked down, still ashamed at his action when he was a naïve little kid. His locked-up emotions had overwhelmed him so much that a drop of tear splattered at the back of his palm. He smiled and quickly wiped his damp eyes.

Then he whispered, "You know very well how it ended."

Kenneth looked away from Damien. He felt apologetic for unknowingly poking Damien’s scars.

However, Damien didn’t think it that way. It was just that it hadn’t been that long since he finally got to patch things up with Ariel and everyone else. And the hole that that misunderstanding had left in his heart hadn’t fully healed in such a short time.

"After knowing his true nature though…" Damien sniffled and then continued, "I felt disgusted at myself. I felt as though I shouldn’t have even existed in the first place. I was even mad at my mother for giving birth to someone like me."

"I’m sorry you felt that way," Kenneth replied while showing some compassion towards Damien. He was literally in Damien’s shoes right now.

Damien suddenly turned to look at Kenneth and then slapped Kenneth’s back with quite a force, making him cough in pain.

"Hey! What was that for?" Kenneth looked at Damien and frowned.

Damien pulled up the corners of his lips and then said, "It was my mother’s choice to give birth to me… to the child of such a disgusting man. But…" He looked over his shoulder to make sure that Scarlett was far enough and then whispered into Kenneth’s ear, "I bet your mother didn’t have any choice. So, don’t be too harsh on her."

Kenneth also looked over his shoulder, at his mother’s back and then said after giving a nod to Damien, "I wasn’t trying to be rude to her. It’s just that… I couldn’t bear the weight of the truth that I had been seeking for decades. So, I needed to get some fresh air and calm myself down." Stay tuned for updates on novelbuddy

Damien patted Kenneth’s back again, this time lightly, and then asked, "Why don’t we go back inside? She must be having negative thoughts in her mind since you abruptly walked out on her."

"You’re right," Kenneth agreed. "Let’s go in and let her finish her story."

Damien immediately pushed himself up on his feet and then held out his hand for Kenneth to hold onto.

When Kenneth looked up at Damien’s face, the latter gave a bright smile and said in a warm voice, "Brother."

Needless to say, it put a smile on Kenneth’s sad face. He gladly grabbed onto Damien’s hand and helped himself up from the floor. And he squinted his eyes and whimsically replied, "Half."

Damien shrugged and said as he put his arm around Kenneth’s shoulder, "Whether it is just half or only a quarter, welcome to the crazy family, brother."

Kenneth felt a burning sensation in his nose and his throat when he heard something that was so heartwarming from Damien. Deep down in his heart, he finally felt as though he really belonged somewhere… somewhere with his own kind of people.

"Thank you!" A soft whisper escaped Kenneth’s mouth without him realizing it. He glanced at Damien’s happy face and said in a broken voice, "I really appreciate it, Damien."

The two of them went back to the place where Scarlett was sitting.

Scarlett let out a quiet sigh of relief when she heard the footsteps behind her. Just as Damien had said, her mind was already making her its victim by playing several negative thoughts and scenarios in her head.

She was already thinking that Kenneth felt disgusted by her and didn’t even want to be in her vicinity.

However, when Kenneth came back and took his seat before her, she felt greatly relieved.

And immediately after sitting down, Kenneth apologized to Scarlett, "I’m sorry. I umm… needed to let that information sink in. Please… why don’t you continue? I think I am ready to hear the rest of the story."

Now, although Scarlett was happy that Kenneth was once again ready to hear her side of the story, she was afraid that Kenneth wouldn’t be able to take it in if he heard the cruel thing that she carried out with her own two hands.

"Are you sure you can handle what I am about to say next?" Scarlett asked in a concerned voice. "You might end up hating me if you do." She lowered her head and murmured, "No… I am sure that you will resent me for the rest of your life."

Kenneth had already made some speculations by now. So, he calmly replied, "I’m sure you had your reasons for whatever it is that you did…"

He looked at Damien as if to ask him if his reply was okay. And when he got a nod of approval from Damien, he asked Scarlett, "Since you are already sharing, why don’t you share everything? Even if I am to get hurt by what you are going to say next, I guess I can recover from it soon if I hear it now."

"Right…" Scarlett took a deep breath and nodded. "I will have to tell you the truth one day or another. I guess I will let everything out in the open when I still have some courage left in me."

Both Kenneth and Damien were ready to hear Scarlett’s story again.

Kenneth was ready to hear anything. ’Nothing could be more shocking than what I already know, right?’ he thought to himself and prepared himself mentally.

And Scarlett’s eyes dilated once more. It was evident that her mind had already dived deep into the worst part of her memories that she had kept locked until now.

She was ready to open the Pandora’s Box.

"As soon as I was transported to the castle after the King won the auction, I was asked to wash up and change into the maids’ clothes. At first, I felt displeased because I thought the King had bought me just to make me one of his many maids."

Streams of tears suddenly rolled down her cheeks as if they were waterfalls. The atrocity that she had faced at the hands of Reginald still had a grip on her soul.

Her whole body started to tremble like a leaf when all the memories inside her Pandora’s Box began erupting in her head and started to flash before her eyes.

She began whimpering feebly and said with her shaky breath, "I didn’t know then that I would have been better off as a simple maid who never had to cross paths with him again."
