She Only Cares About Cultivation-Chapter 834 - 781: Famine Era 22 (Second Update)
As everyone else left, the man lying on the bed looked at her, wearing a mask and taking notes, and suddenly spoke.
"Are you that female student? Ye Huan?"
Ye Huan raised her eyebrows in surprise, "You’ve got a good memory, even in this state you can remember me; if I recall correctly, it’s been three or four years, right?"
"You were the first woman I kissed; do you think I’d forget?"
The man’s voice was dry, yet carried a hint of teasing and the relief of surviving a disaster.
Ye Huan’s face turned red, and she glared at him fiercely, "Pfft, I really should have slapped you back then."
Tong Zhan snorted, looking her up and down with interest as she wore a white coat, white hat, and a mask.
"Looks like you’ve completed your studies now? You can take charge of patients alone?"
Ye Huan glanced at him and continued taking down the medical notes, as the nurse had gone elsewhere since she was there to attend to him.
"Hey, I’m thirsty. Get me a glass of water." Only then did Ye Huan remember he hadn’t had any water since he woke up.
She quickly got up to pour him a glass of water, but since he was lying face down, he couldn’t tilt his head back to drink. Ye Huan found a spoon, sat on a stool, and fed him one spoonful at a time. The guy must have been really thirsty, as he finished a whole large mug of water. After drinking, he remembered something.
How was he supposed to go to the bathroom lying like this?
After he finished drinking, Ye Huan looked at the sky, "You can’t eat anything for 12 hours post-surgery. If you’re hungry, just drink water; you can drink more water to boost metabolism and detox. With such a serious back injury, you won’t be able to get out of bed for at least ten days to half a month. By the way, aren’t you with Country’s Liberation Army? How did you end up with the Liberation Army?"
Tong Zhan glanced at her sideways, "You little girl, don’t ask what you shouldn’t. This isn’t something you need to know. Rather than food, I’m more concerned about how I’ll relieve myself shortly. Can you get me a urinal?"
Ye Huan’s face turned red again because of his words, "Wait here. I remember you have a guard with you, right? I’m just done with the notes, so I’ll get him over here."
"Hey, don’t rush off. Let me ask you, will you be the one taking care of me from now on?"
Ye Huan shrugged, "That depends on the arrangements above. I’m just an intern doctor, I don’t have that kind of authority."
Ye Huan took her notebook and left. Not long after, the guard came over, and upon seeing Tong Zhan lying in bed, he began to cry, sniffing and tearing, looking pitiful — especially since the guard didn’t seem very old, about sixteen or seventeen, not even as old as Ye Huan!
"Why’re you wailing? I’m here lying fine, aren’t I? Quickly, find a urinal, "
"Leader, you’re awake! You have no idea how worried the brothers have been these days. Dr. Xiao Ye just wouldn’t let me in, saying all I know is cry. I guarded you outside for half the day, and the brothers from our group have come over several times during the day."
Cui Lei fetched the urinal while observing Tong Zhan’s body, and despite his movements being minimal, it still tugged at the wound, causing his face to contort in pain. But the urge persisted, so he had to endure it. After finally relieving himself and releasing the waste inside, he sighed and told Cui Lei.
"Shi Tou, you need to be strong. You don’t want the lady to laugh her head off, right? How’s Ye Jiachao doing?"
"His leg was injured in the explosion and was sent to another hospital. Rest assured, it can be saved. If it weren’t for your timely help this time, I’m afraid, "
"Alright, anyone would have done the same; he’s only a few years older than you, after all."
With only water allowed, Tong Zhan’s body also couldn’t hold up, and he drifted off into sleep dazedly.
When he woke again, it was daylight, his back stinging slightly. Turning his head, he saw Ye Huan had come in at some point and was applying medication to his back.
Shi Tou held a tray of medicine, bending down beside him. Seeing Tong Zhan awake, he quickly said.
"Leader, you’re awake? Dr. Xiao Ye is applying medicine. Don’t move!"
"Hiss..." As her cotton swab touched one of his more serious wounds, his body jolted, emitting a suppressed gasp.
"Sorry, I’ll be more gentle." Ye Huan looked at him apologetically and sighed helplessly when she saw beads of cold sweat forming on his forehead.
"In your situation, I’m afraid you’ll need to endure many more days. Our anesthetic is in short supply and must be reserved for surgeries."
"No problem... I can endure it!" Having survived such a severe blast injury, what was a little pain?
Compared to those who have had their legs sawed off or arms chopped, being intact was already a huge blessing.
Ye Huan bent over to apply the medicine, working all the way down to the base of his spine. She had to stand up several times as her back couldn’t take being bent over for too long.
Even after surgery, his back was a mess of flesh and blood. Fortunately, Ye Huan was accustomed to such scenes and comforted him while saying.
"I’ll go make you some congee in a while," she had rice she milled herself, red dates, spinach, soybeans she grew in her space—all to replenish his body.
After all, several years ago, it was thanks to him; who knows what trouble she might have gotten into otherwise!
After applying the medicine, Ye Huan went to find a place to cook congee, as she was currently only responsible for one patient, so she had to see to his meals too.
Due to Tong Zhan’s rank, he would get an egg each day, but other higher-level and more nutritious items were out of reach.
The rice provided by the hospital and military was mixed coarse grains. If Ye Huan was making congee for Tong Zhan, it would likely be a mixed grain congee, but she secretly added rice, millet, red dates, peanuts, and other nourishing grains. Once it thickened, she cracked an egg into the small Tao pot, simmered it for a bit, and it was just about done.
