Single Spell Sorcerer-Chapter 120: Gorgon
Chapter 120: Gorgon
"Finally," Melayne whispered, her voice barely audible over the rustling vegetation.
After many days of scouring the forest, the group had finally found their first boss.
It was still before noon, so they had done so quite early.
Jax looked forward at the clearing in the forest that was covered in tall green grass. The boss lay upright in the middle for everyone to see.
Jax wanted to be happy to meet his first boss, but sadly it was not the Lakeborn Monkey they’d been hoping for. With Melayne’s quest done, he was the only one dragging the others behind, so he had hoped he could get it done quickly.
Sadly, he didn’t have the opportunity. While not the Lakeborn Monkey, this boss was still something equally impressive—a Three-headed Gorgon. Its serpentine necks lay coiled and alert in the grass.. Each head was the size of a human torso, covered in dark scales that gleamed with an oily sheen. The creature’s body was massive, easily twenty feet long, with a powerful tail that could probably crush a tree.
"Should we fight it?" Jax asked, studying the boss.
Ning remained silent. He too couldn’t jump directly into a fight with a boss monster just because he wanted to. A Boss was a Boss for a reason.
"We’re strong enough," Lucille said confidently. "I think we can handle it."
Melayne nodded in agreement. "You and Ning are monstrous at fighting any monsters. I know about the three-headed gorgon and I think we can beat it."
"You’ve fought it before, have you not?" Ning asked. "Anything to look out for?"
He knew Melayne to be an older fighter that had stayed behind in the village due to her quest.
Melayne thought for a bit. "I only fought it once, but I’ve heard enough stories to know what to be wary of. The gorgon has one of three main spells it is born with. Gorgon Eyes, Gorgon Breath, Gorgon Aura. Each spell petrifies someone."
"Earth Magic," Lucille causally added.
"Gorgon’s Eyes," she continued, "guarantee a petrification on any fighter the gorgon looks at directly."
"Gorgon’s Breath has a lesser chance at petrifying someone, but it can work on multiple people at once."
"Gorgon’s Aura may be worse. The gorgon emits a petrification aura around it. Any damage you take within that aura also has a small chance to paralyze you."
Jax thought for a moment and nodded. He remembered reading about this in the Ink Hermit’s book back at the village.
"Ning, do bosses still show you critical spots?" he asked.
"Bosses have five spots instead of three," Ning replied simply. "But annoyingly, I can only see the second one after I’ve landed a hit on the first one. So bosses are a little difficult for me compared to regular monsters."
He looked back at the group with a wide smile. "Of course, that doesn’t mean I’m going to stay back. I am looking forward to this fight. It’s been a long time since I’ve met a boss after all."
It had been nearly a month since they had come to the village, so it was understandable.
Lucille looked concerned. "We have three melee fighters. We should probably stick to one head each."
"I can support from a distance with my whip if things get chaotic," Jax said. "But I’ll start a melee first."
Lucille pulled out a bow and arrow from her inventory. "I can help as well from range."
"You’re not a Warrior though," Jax said.
"I don’t need to be a Warrior to know how to use a bow and arrow, do I?" she asked.
Lucille was a curious case for him. She made no secret that she hid things from them. That only added to her charm.
Since the decision to fight was made, they walked in.
They moved carefully through the tall grass, the stalks parting around them. The gorgon’s heads turned toward them as they approached, six serpentine eyes watching their every moment.
The creature noticed them before they were fully in position and immediately began moving toward them, its massive body cutting through the grass like a ship through water.
"Here we go," Jax muttered. "I’ll start first. The two of you follow behind."
They still didn’t know which of its 3 spells it was born with this time.
Jax decided to take the initiative and rushed forward first, raising his hand to cast his binding spell. Many layers of poison threads shot out, wrapping around the gorgon’s body in thick, toxic coils.
He read nothing about the gorgon being immune to poison, so the threads should absolutely work.
The gorgon responded immediately with a tail slam as ts tail hurtled toward him at a speed comparable to a Treehopper’s jump.
Jax barely dodged, throwing himself to the side as the tail crashed into the ground where he’d been standing. The impact sent dirt and grass flying everywhere.
’It was too fast,’ he thought, scrambling to regain his footing.
Before he could launch another attack, one of the gorgon’s head turned to look down at him. Its two serpentine eyes began to glow a dark shade of yellow, a light pulsing with energy.
Jax felt the energy resonate with his body. Next, he felt his body grow dull and then hard. He could see and hear everything around him, but he was frozen in place. It was as if his muscles and bones had turned to stone, his joints locked in place.
He was petrified.
The gorgon’s tail came around again, slamming into Jax’s immobilized form and sending him tumbling through the grass. But before it could follow up on the attack, Ning arrived at the creature’s leftmost head and swung down with his spear.
The gorgon twisted its head at the last moment, making it hard for Ning to land a clean hit. The spear stabbed into the flesh, but since it was not a critical spot, it did no damage to the gorgon.
When the spear came back out, the wound healed automatically.
"Damn it," Ning cursed and jumped back.
The battle had only just begun, and they were already down one fighter.
