Single Spell Sorcerer-Chapter 123: The Final Phase
Chapter 123: The Final Phase
"Jax, go for the same head as me," Melayne called out, her flaming sword carving another line across the gorgon’s left neck. "The sooner we get rid of a head, the less we’ll have to focus on."
Jax, who had been focusing on the middle head and watching out for the last head, saw wisdom in those words.
"Agreed," Jax replied, positioning himself alongside her. He focused on the two heads still, but only to defend himself from it. For now, his target was the third head, alongside Melayne.
The boss was clearly distracted by the injuries upon injuries that were inflicted upon it, as well as the poison threads that continuously lowered its health. Its heads were still tied together at the neck by Jax’s Earth threads, making it harder for the creature to move about with as much freedom as before.
The binding had forced all three heads closer together, limiting their independent striking range.
The two also remained directly in front of the boss, making it harder for it to use its tail to attack them. They could just run to the other side should the boss attempt to bring its tail to attack.
While Jax and Melayne focused their combined assault on the left head, Ning saw his opportunity. He moved quickly through the tall grass, circling around to approach the gorgon’s elongated back.
He thought he had been silent, but the boss hadn’t fully lost itself in its fight against Jax and Melayne. It noticed Ning’s movement at the last moment, and whipped its massive tail around immediately in an attempt to strike down Ning before he got too close.
Ning dodged the tail with some luck and some skill, using the momentum to leap onto the creature’s back. His spear came down with tremendous force, delivering a powerful stab directly into oily black flesh.
He stabbed through the second Critical Spot he’d noticed.
The gorgon’s reaction was immediate and violent. It squirmed in agony, its entire body writhing as the critical hit sent waves of pain through its body. Ning struggled to stay on the boss’s back while it thrashed wildly.
The three heads raised high in pain temporarily as well, losing focus on the other fighters.
Melayne seized the moment of distraction, attacking the left neck with renewed fury. Her blazing sword bit deep into the wounded flesh, flames cauterizing the wound even as she cut. The sizzling sound was quite haunting.
The gorgon’s left head turned toward her with murderous intent, its eyes beginning to glow with that familiar dark yellow light.
The boss used its signature Spell once again.
Jax ran for Melayne to protect her, but to his surprise, she dashed back by herself.
An amulet around Melayne’s neck glowed at the same time as she moved, and she wasn’t affected by the spell at all. The amulet had protected her from the Gorgon’s spell.
Jax looked at her in disbelief for a moment, before turning toward the Gorgon.
The Gorgon had expected Melayne to freeze the moment it used its Spell, so it was already slamming down its neck at the location where Melayne was standing. Without her, it thrashed its head on the ground.
Jax moved forward immediately, seizing the opportunity. His axe found the exact spot where Melayne had cut before. He activated his Twin Strike spell stone as he swung, and the spell doubled his attack.
His axe landed at the cut Melayne had left, digging deep into the flesh even further. He felt bone beyond the flesh, bone that stopped his axe from advancing any further.
Then, the image of the axe that moved behind it like an after image caught up, and the force it brought was enough to split through the bone.
Jax’s axe cleaved through the bone and then the remaining flesh. His axe came out on the other side with no additional obstacle, The neck severed cleanly, with dark blood spurting as the left head fell to the ground with a heavy thud.
The gorgon’s roar of pain and rage was deafening. Everyone instinctively moved back as the creature thrashed around in the large grassy terrain.
"Good work!" Melayne said as Jax reached her. Her face was one with massive smiles. The result had been satisfactory.
But the battle wasn’t over yet. There were still 2 more heads to go through. Before they could even think of that, however, the gorgon began to change form again, entering what was clearly its third and final phase.
Its body lost its previous shiny, scaled appearance, becoming matte and somehow more menacing. The upper half of its body also seemed to shrink back into a smaller form. Its tail remained just as slender and long as before, perhaps with some added strength now.
Most disturbing of all, its remaining two sets of eyes were now constantly active, glowing with continuous petrifying energy.
"Don’t look at its eyes," Melayne warned urgently. "If you look at them for too long, you’ll petrify instantly."
Jax and the others looked away.
They tried to look at the rest of its body, but even that was difficult. The boss moved around, its body low on the ground now, which made it hard to ignore its eyes. They had to look away from the gorgon entirely in order to avoid its eyes.
Fighting without being able to look directly at their opponent was a nightmare. Jax found himself struggling to land effective attacks, forced to rely on his peripheral vision and spatial awareness to just keep himself alive.
His swings scraped the gorgon at best when he tried, and he barely dodged any one of its bine attacks, or its tail swings.
The gorgon took advantage of their handicap, striking Melayne with one of its remaining heads. The impact sent her flying backward, her body hitting the ground hard and rolling several feet before coming to a stop.
Ning was effectively useless now too. Without being able to look at the creature directly, he couldn’t see any critical spots. His attacks were nothing more than distractions for the creature, while every attack the creature did was one that could kill him.
Jax tried to keep fighting, but he soon realized it was useless. He moved back toward Lucille, realizing she was their only remaining option. Her ranged attacks didn’t require her to attack up close, making her someone they could rely on.
"Use your thunderbolt," Jax said. "Here." He pulled out the Thundercloud Staff from his inventory and handed it to her. The weapon was one that he had received from the treasure upon reaching the second carriage, which could improve any attacks that used lightning or sound elements.
Lucille took the staff hesitantly. "I’m not sure I can do it," she admitted. "I can only target a location instead of an enemy. And with my delay..."
"Then I’ll keep the enemy in place," Jax said with determination. "Prepare your spell. I will do what I can. You won’t have much time though." freewebnσvel.cøm
"What will you–"
Before Lucille could finish her words, Jax ran toward the boss. He got rid of his axe, keeping only his armor. Then, threads began to form from both his hands at once.
He was going to try and tie the boss in place.
