Single Spell Sorcerer-Chapter 138: The Next Party Member
Chapter 138: The Next Party Member
Jax brought out a spell scroll and showed it to Carlton. The parchment was high quality, with intricate text that was in no way understandable to any human. But, the words did directly translate into the minds of those who read it.
Jax allowed Carlton to read part of it, who managed to understand what spell it was.
"Spellbreak," he said, his eyebrows rising slightly.
It was a spell that allowed someone to break out of any restriction spell, be they paralysis, binding, sleep effects, anything that limited movement or ability.
"If you join our party, I’ll give this to you," Jax offered.
Carlton showed no emotion for a bit as though he was heavily considering the option. Jax could see the worth of this spell and wanted the man he thought it suit best to have it. Surely Carlton could see its worth too.
Carlton suddenly burst out into laughter. "You wish to purchase my services with just a spell?"
Jax realized the situation wasn’t going as he had initially envisioned. "It’s an incredible spell that can save you in times of mistakes. Most people would consider it invaluable." ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
"Most people would, but not me. A Spell is the last thing I need to pay for. And to pay for it with my entire self? You thought too highly of your little paper. I don’t need it. And if you don’t have a price for me, then you can leave. I don’t want to waste my time with you."
Carlton turned and walked away without another word, leaving Jax standing alone in the hotel lobby.
Jax stood there for a long time, taking in what had happened. "He’s a piece of shit, isn’t he?"
"He’s capable though," Gemma said, sitting on his shoulder. "Are you going to take him?"
"A capable piece of shit is still a piece of shit," Jax said, putting back the scroll. "Screw him. We’ll find someone else."
He had made his decision. As incredible as Carlton was, he didn’t need him. The man’s attitude was too far removed from what a person should be, too focused on personal gain rather than party cooperation. He’d find someone on his own, who actually wanted to be part of a team.
He needed to find someone soon though, as they would need to train and know each other’s strengths and weaknesses well before the registration time ended.
Without wasting any more time there, Jax left the city and returned to Fang Heights. The journey felt longer this time, each second passing with him having nothing to do, nothing to plan, nothing to look forward to.
It took him the same amount of days to return, and now there were only thirty-five days before registration ended.
Jax found his way back to the lodging and met with Melayne and the rest who were waiting for him.
Jax explained to them everything in detail and told them the circumstances that had led to him making the decision he did. "It feels like a waste of time," he said, slumping into his chair at their usual table.
"It wasn’t a waste of time. You paid off your debt. That’s no waste," Melayne explained. "We’ve been searching for people on our own too, so we should soon find someone to join us."
Ning nodded in agreement. "We’ve talked to several potential candidates while you were away. None of them quite fit what we’re looking for, but at least we have a better idea of what’s available and what we need."
After a long night of rest, Jax and the other three went out in the morning to hunt once again. They hadn’t done so as a group since escaping the forest. They found a crowd of people at the west gate of Fang Heights, readying to enter the Billowing Woods. The area was bustling with activity as various parties prepared for the day’s hunt, with many searching for parties to join.
Instead of just the four of them entering, Jax and the rest had decided to have someone else join the party for the hunt. It would be a good way to test potential candidates in actual combat situations.
All of them had decided to stick to certain roles so as to actually test these people.
Ning was a spearman, fighting in close combat but mostly defensively. Melayne was a swordsman, and was going to be the one doing the most out of anyone else in terms of offense. Jax was a ranged fighter with his whip, and was told to not use his threads to wrap monsters. Lucille was a sorcerer that fought with her Water Guardian and occasional spells, providing both offense and battlefield control.
So they needed someone to cover their weaknesses. They were searching for someone who could heal the fighters when they got hurt and take care of their debuffs when they inevitably got hit by one. Aside from that, they also needed someone who was willing to join permanently and move on to the next carriage with them.
A few people came up who didn’t meet their criteria. One was a fire mage who had no healing abilities. Another was a support specialist who was nowhere near the first Emerald stage. A third seemed capable but made it clear he was not interested in joining the party permanently.
After a while, a young man with long blonde hair showed up. "I heard you’re looking for a healer-support?" he asked, his voice confident but not arrogant.
"That’s right," Lucille said. "We’re looking for someone to join permanently for the trial in a month. Are you willing?"
"Yes," he replied and explained who he was. "I’m Roman. I specialize in healing magic and purification spells, and I plan on taking the trial soon as well."
"What stage are you at?" Lucille asked.
"5th Opal stage, but I’m as capable as a 1st Emerald stage. I’m close to reaching the stage as well."
Lucille turned to the rest, judging their expression. The rest of them shrugged. The guy fit the criteria and seemed willing to join.
They accepted him after a brief discussion.
"Alright, Roman," Melayne said. "Let’s go to the Billowing Woods and see just how good you are."
