Single Spell Sorcerer-Chapter 49: Final Phase
Chapter 49: Final Phase
The Spider Queen scurried across the ground, running toward Jax. Its speed was astonishing for its size, seemingly unimpaired by the stickiness of the ground below.
Jax prepared himself, filling his entire body with Navi as he ran toward it as well. As they approached each other, the Spider Queen came down to bite him at the last moment. With its size, it was as if a boulder were coming down to stomp him into the ground.
Jax dodged at the last moment to the side and jumped back in to deliver the attack.
All eight giant eyes of the spider turned at once, eight pupils staring in his direction. A leg came from the side, attacking him, but Jax didn’t dodge it at all. Instead, he swung down on the spider’s face, targeting its eyes.
He hit one of the larger eyes, bursting it open. At the same time, the leg struck him as well, sending him flying.
Jax skidded across the floor, both his head and body thankfully protected by the armor he wore. While it wasn’t the best armor, it did a good enough job for him during this fight.
Still, he was in pain as he got back up. He looked into the distance and saw the bronze handle of the axe sticking from the spider’s eye. He needed to get it quickly.
Without the axe, he was significantly faster. He ran toward the spider and baited it into biting at him. At the last moment, he dodged and grabbed onto the axe. When the spider pulled its head back, Jax went along with it.
He flipped upward and landed on top of its head, his hand still on the axe. He stood up and quickly wrapped his legs and the spider’s head with his spell, fastening himself onto the spider.
Then, he pulled his axe and began chopping down at the spider’s eyes.
He popped another one of the spider’s eyes, causing it to go into a frenzy. Jax lowered himself as the spider thrashed around, trying to get rid of him, but even as it did, it could not shake him off.
Jax stood up when he thought the time was right and popped another one of its eyes.
The eyes were so easy to burst, no different from the consistency of a slime. And as easy as it was to pop them, they caused just that much trouble for the spider.
The spider tried to reach Jax, but with him being on its head, it just couldn’t. Its limbs were surprisingly not nimble enough to bend over its head. It did the only thing it could in that moment and released its children to attack him.
Three spiderlings appeared from its back, climbing over to the head where Jax was. Jax didn’t notice them at first at all. The first time he did was when a spiderling bit him on the back.
His leather armor could not protect him against the bite, its fangs easily bypassing it and sinking into his flesh.
Jax cried out in pain before lifting his axe and swinging at the spiderling. He destroyed it in a single attack and then waited for the other two to close in before killing them as well.
By the time he was done with the three, he was beginning to feel the effects of the spider’s venom.
He stumbled onto his knees, feeling as though the world was beginning to spin around him. The color of the world changed, becoming various shades of brown.
Jax did the best he could at that moment and pulled out a potion from his Inventory. He opened the stopper and immediately gulped it down, ignoring the vile taste that accompanied it.
As the potion settled into his body, he felt the world regain its color, and the spinning slowly vanished. The venom was being countered by the antidote.
’Thank goodness I could reach for them,’ he thought. ’I can’t imagine what would’ve happened if I had waited a little too long.’
The poison was dealt with, but the pain was not. His back still bled profusely. He could feel his blood seeping down into his pants. Thankfully, the pain only made his mind clearer.
He lifted his axe, feeling as though it was lighter as well.
He pulled it up and swung it downward again to take care of the remaining eyes of the spider.
There were only two eyes remaining when something happened again. Jax had been keeping an eye on the spiderlings at the back, just in case there were more. The translucent sacs on the Spider Queen’s back still numbered over a dozen—he had to be careful.
As he watched for the sacs, something else happened. The Spider Queen’s red back began changing color once more. Its color deepened, going from red to black.
At the same time, the Spider Queen suddenly tilted upward and shot a white liquid at the trees, which solidified into its threads. Simultaneously, the threads that had been holding Jax’s feet to the spider’s head vanished, and gravity pulled him downward.
Jax tumbled backward, hit the spider’s back, and fell even further until he hit the ground with a loud thud. Through bleary eyes, he saw the Spider Queen climb onto the trees, where it remained high above him.
Jax grunted as he got back up, ignoring the pain he felt as he prepared himself.
Each boss had at least two phases.
The Spider Queen had three.
And she had entered her final phase. Now, she would remain up in the trees, never coming down at all. The dynamic of the fight had changed—Jax could only fight the Spider Queen while she was in the trees.
And of course, she was not the only one he would have to deal with.
With a soft thud, a black spiderling landed in front of him. And with another thud, a second one landed. Then, from the Spider Queen’s back, crawled out the rest.
Over a dozen spiderlings were going to help their mother in the fight. And all of them had a single target.
Jax.
