Chapter 53: Absorbing

Jax jumped down the various logs, feeling strain with every jump. Still, he was definitely lighter than usual. Not by a lot, but enough.

"I’m no doubt a tenth lighter than I usually am."

After jumping all the way down, he pulled out an unlit torch from his Inventory and lit it before walking away from the Spider Queen’s lair.

Gemma was quite surprised at that. "You’re not going to dismantle its body?"

"I don’t have the time," Jax said. "There should be people coming this way at any moment. I can’t spend my time back there trying to get its venom sack out."

"That makes sense. At least you weren’t stolen from."

Jax nodded.

He walked away, and even when he was far enough, the boss’s lair did not vanish. The field did not swallow it up at all. He felt vindicated in having made the decision to leave at that moment.

Had he not left, someone else would have found him. There was a reason the field hadn’t disappeared just yet. There were people there.

Jax continued his way back, meeting merely two more beasts along the way. He didn’t have the time to deal with these monsters, so he dispatched them as quickly as he could, using up even more of his Navi.

By the time he left the forest, he was nearly all out of it.

It was still morning when Jax walked out of the forest. He had gone to find the boss so early that he could definitely make it back in time for lunch.

He checked his new skill for the time being.

Body Fortification: This skill allows the Sorcerer to strengthen their body using Navi with great efficiency. There is minor loss of Navi when using the Skill without doing anything.

Jax raised an eyebrow. One of the major issues with his regular usage of Navi to fortify his body had been that even when he did nothing, as long as he was empowering his body with the skill, it would slowly draw on the Navi, making him waste quite a bit of it.

Thankfully, it appeared that issue had been rectified now that it was a skill. At least, the wastage was improved by a lot.

"I have two skills now, Gemma," he said. "How many more can I learn?"

"Many more. You just need to find them on your own or have someone else teach them to you." frёeωebɳovel.com

Jax nodded.

After returning to the city, Jax went to a shop to get some treatment for the venom he had been splashed with twice. The training center couldn’t treat venoms at all, so he had to go to a shop instead.

The antidote he got was some ointment for him to eat and apply to the places where he had been poisoned. It was cheaper than a potion, but only because it was slow-acting. Where a potion would clear it all in seconds, this would take more than a day.

Even with a sorcerer’s increased healing speed, it would take a while.

Jax returned to the training center and had his lunch before going back to his room to rest for a short while. He let his body heal before he did anything, but he was rather impatient about it all.

After resting all the way to the afternoon, he decided that he could wait no longer.

Jax brought out the 3 Earth Opal stones and began consuming them.

Time slowly passed as he absorbed them, making use of what filled his empty Navi to use his spell.

Dull brown thread dropped from his fingers in front of him as he drew in the Elemental Navi from the stone.

Time passed slowly, and around 20 minutes later, he had completely drained the first stone. When he opened his palm, there was nothing there.

Jax used the next stone and continued. That too took him 20 more minutes. Last time, this had been all that was needed for him to unlock the Poison Element, but because he had improved so much since then, he needed more now.

Once the second stone was gone, Jax moved to the final one. He began absorbing it too, using the spell with it at the same time. The pile of threads before him had reached a much larger quantity—something he, sadly, couldn’t save for later.

All Elemental threads did disappear some time after creation, after all. It appeared that with an improved Navi stage, they would continue to last longer as well, but for now, they didn’t last much beyond two hours.

As Jax continued to absorb the energy, he frowned as no notification came. It had been over 10 minutes with the last elemental stone he had, but there was still nothing.

What’s going on? he thought. I didn’t even need two stones last time. Surely, three entire stones should be enough even if I improved, right?

And yet, it wasn’t.

As the final drop of Navi entered his sea and was subsequently turned to thread, he didn’t get any notification at all. The elemental unlock he had been excited for didn’t come.

Jax was terribly disappointed at that realization. He frowned, looking down at the pile of threads below him that nearly came up to the bed. A small ray of hope came to him as he dismissed the threads, taking back a portion of their Navi, which was more than enough to fill his sea.

Happy, he quickly used the spell again, only to realize that the Navi he took back had no elements at all. It was pure Navi, unaltered in every way.

The disappointment only got worse.

"Did it not work?" Gemma asked.

Jax nodded. "Three wasn’t enough. I need more."

"That’s a shame, but it is to be expected. You have improved so much since the last time that you are close enough to entering the 4-Star Opal stage at any time now. I fear that is the reason why you needed four stones instead of three."

Jax couldn’t help but sigh.

The reason he had failed was because it had taken him too long to find them, and in that time, he had improved tremendously.
