Chapter 70: Chapter 70 The Big Rat

Chapter 70 -70 The Big Rat

They were chatting when Chen Shaonan’s voice came through the walkie-talkie, “Dr. Feng, is it still dangerous to go out in the hallway with a mask on now?”

Feng Zhekai replied, “We can’t be one hundred percent sure, so I don’t recommend going out. All the windows in the hallway are open for ventilation. Let’s wait until tomorrow.”

Cheng Yang, holding back disgust, said, “Can the vegetables go without watering for today?”

Lu Xuerong replied, “One day is fine, just go early tomorrow morning.”

Having agreed on this, they didn’t waste too much electricity and stopped talking on the walkie-talkie.

Since they couldn’t go out today, Gu Pan stayed home to do crafts, taking out the wool she had stockpiled and following online tutorials to crochet.

People really discover their potential when idle, thought Gu Pan, whose knitting skills were actually quite good, having learned how to crochet blankets.

Neither of them ate meat that evening; they didn’t say it, but both understood in their hearts.

They had appetizing hot and sour glass noodles and cold skin noodles for dinner, followed by a large sour apple each.

Gu Pan passed a small bag of lemon slices to each of a few neighbors through the window, both to keep the nausea at bay and to boost vitamin C intake for epidemic prevention.

They slept well that night, having thought that after sealing the gaps the day before, there would be no more rats in the hallway, and they could go up to the roof.

However, Gu Pan was awakened by the walkie-talkie, with Cheng Yang’s voice carrying anger, “How did these damn rats get up here again?”

Cheng Yang had been haunted by dreams of the dead mice all night, so he got up early with dark circles under his eyes, planning to go up to the rooftop for some fresh air. But when he carefully pried open a crack in the iron door to look out, he was almost scared to flight.

Gu Pan quickly picked up the walkie-talkie, “It’s good they haven’t entered the room. Still, don’t go out. We have limited protective suits, and we can’t afford to waste them. This time, one person a day goes out to deal with the dead rats and plug the holes.”

Everyone agreed with this decision. They couldn’t worry about the rooftop vegetables for now; the main thing was to avoid catching the plague.

They decided to start with Feng Zhekai cleaning up today, with a rotation of 601, 602, 701, 702.

Since they felt the rats were quite intelligent and couldn’t be dealt with in a day or two, they would just take turns cleaning up.

Feng Zhekai had experience with epidemics, having been involved in protective support during a three-year outbreak, so he shared a lot of valuable experience with everyone.

He taught them how to clean contaminated areas, how to put on and take off protective suits, how to disinfect, and so on.

When it was Lu Ruisheng’s turn, he cleaned for two hours, disinfected, and then took off his protective suit, disinfected his whole body, and went home.

After he entered his home, there was something he couldn’t stop pondering.

Gu Pan, seeing him lost in thought, asked, “Did you notice something wrong?”

Lu Ruisheng nodded, “Indeed, the hole we sealed yesterday was welded shut. How did a new one appear today, and it doesn’t look like it was made by rats?”

Gu Pan perked up, “What do you mean?”

“The edges of the hole look man-made.”

“Are you sure?”

“At least a fifty percent chance.”

“Then let’s discuss with everyone and take turns keeping watch tonight.”

“Okay.”

After agreeing, Lu Ruisheng picked up the walkie-talkie and shared the issue with everyone.

After listening, there was a moment of silence on the walkie-talkie, followed by agreement to take turns keeping watch. If it was indeed man-made, they would kill the responsible party upon capture, because it would mean they were being targeted for death. So, such a person deserved to be killed.

Cheng Yang volunteered to go first.

But Lu Ruisheng insisted on taking the first shift himself, taking the opportunity to further fortify the iron door on the fifth floor and see how it could be better defended, providing more valuable experience for those who would stand guard later.

Everyone had no objections to this because it made sense. While Feng Zhekai had experience in epidemic prevention, in terms of defense, they relied on Lu Ruisheng.

That very night, Gu Pan went out with Lu Ruisheng. Both wore protective suits, which were enough for the current epidemic.

Previously, Lu Ruisheng had made a covert observation window at eye level on the fifth floor’s iron door to observe and counter anyone from the outside. It was concealed from the outside but could be opened from the inside, and coincidentally it also served as a firing position.

Once Lu Ruisheng and Gu Pan arrived at the doorway, they hid and remained silent, listening to audiobooks with earphones.

As night fell, they heard footsteps from outside, followed by the sound of someone prying the door with metal.

Gu Pan signaled to Lu Ruisheng that she would go take a look since she had “Space” and could instantly retreat to safety in case of danger, so she suggested she check the outside.

While talking, she had already opened the observation window and, upon seeing the person outside, Gu Pan was taken aback and pointed her gun at them, “Building manager, is it you?”

The building manager, startled by Gu Pan’s voice, jumped, “You, why are you here?”

Gu Pan smiled, “If you can be here, why can’t I? What good is this harmful act to you?”

The moment the building manager saw the gun, she stopped struggling, “It’s me. My family has all been infected with the plague. We’re not going to make it. I can’t accept it. We all live in the same building, so why do you groups that form alliances get to live well while others get excluded? You clearly have the ability to protect us. I’m the building manager. I’ve served this building well. Why should my family get infected with the plague? Both my son and husband are dead. I don’t want to live anymore; let’s just die together.”

Gu Pan took a deep breath, “Who doesn’t look out for themselves in the apocalypse? What obligation do I have to protect you? You might not necessarily die from the plague, but what you’re doing now is seeking death.”

Finished speaking, she shot the building manager in the head—such people couldn’t be left alive. In the apocalypse, you truly see the most evil side of people. If she couldn’t survive, why didn’t she consider her own problems instead of blaming others?

Thinking about it, since Gu Pan and her group had been living there, there had been no thieves or robbers in the building. You would think they were the fortunate ones, but still, they were ungrateful. Then, let them die.

With this trouble dealt with, they fortified the door and went home.

At their front door, they removed their protective suits and disinfected themselves before entering the house and updating everyone on the walkie-talkie about what had just happened. Because of the gunshot, everyone was awake already.

Everyone had their own thoughts on what had happened, as no one anticipated such an unfounded act of malevolence; where someone, out of sheer envy of others’ well-being, sought to doom them.

That night, nobody slept, and there was no desire for sleep.

After taking a bath, both Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng lay down and only managed to fall asleep as dawn approached.

The next day they didn’t wake up until nearly noon, but there were no more rats in the hallway. After a night of ventilation and another disinfection by Feng Zhekai in the morning, everyone was able to go out without wearing protective suits.

However, for safety reasons, they avoided exercising in the hallways for the next couple of days. When going out, they still wore masks and shoe covers, and disinfected their footwear at the door before entering their homes.

Now they were completely safe, with no chance of rats coming in, and they didn’t plan to go out for a short time.
