Sold to the Capo-Chapter 32: GULLIBLE OR STRONG
ADRIANA’S POV
"Where is it?" Val was staring at me, her hands on her hips a few days later.
"Where’s what?"
"You didn’t just come here to sit down, did you?" She sat down on the low bench beside me, wiping sweat off her brow as we watched the guards train.
Did they never get tired? A few of them sent disapproving glances my way but I couldn’t care less about that anymore.
"As a matter of fact, I did. I’ve been in that house for hours and it gets boring, you know?" I muttered, folding my hands.
"Go on. Bring your gun. Let’s do shooting practice" She stood up, clapping her hands together.
I raised a brow at her suggestion. "You do know I’m not allowed to train with you guys right?"
She shrugged simply. "So what? He’s not home, is he? He won’t be home for a long time so let’s just focus on this one for a while, Adriana"
Sure Vincenzo had disappeared again for ’work’ as Henry had said but I found it weird that he didn’t take his right hand with him. Must be highly confidential then.
"I don’t think I would want to risk something like that" I shook my head. "When he gets back, we’ll continue training"
"Do you really believe he’s trying to train you?" Her tone was lower, her gaze searching mine and I had to look away for a second, confusion in my eyes.
"What?"
"Think of it like this. He’s not trying to help you train, he’s trying to make you realize you’re too weak to train" Her tone had no room for sympathy or empathy.
Just the cold hard truth as it was.
"I’m not too weak to train, you know?" I had been spending my time in the house gym and after using the punching bag for hours a day, I was beginning to grow quite confident in defending myself against minor threats.
If the threats turned out to be minor.
"Well maybe you’re not weak but you are gullible" This was one thing about Valentina. She liked to speak the cold hard truth without filter and would only think about it after she had done it but she was careful to not divulge too much sometimes about a person.
She was a really nice person but I still felt a bit uncomfortable around her. The only person here who I felt mildly too comfortable with was Henry and that was because he was a nice guy who always knew the right words and even though he instilled fear into others, he tried to make me feel at ease in his presence.
I crossed my arms, a challenging look on my face. "Oh Please... when last did I do something stupid?"
"Right now" she retorted flatly. "Like you’re doing something stupid right now"
I looked around myself confused, a whisper escaping my lips. "How?"
"Where’s this?" She said and I looked up to see her pull out her gun, waving it in front of me.
Right.
"Oh... I don’t need to carry that all day, do I? I mean it’s empty anyways" I forced a smile at her.
"No, you’re actually very wrong because this is very important to carry about" She corrected.
A man shambled over to us, a dull look on his face.
"Hey Val" He nodded at her and then looked back at me. "Ma’am," he said politely.
Sometimes I think Vincenzo told his men to treat me prim and proper because why else were they masking their contempt behind all the smiles they gave me not to mention how formal they were to me?
I wanted to change that but these people scared the living crap out of me.
"You know you can just call me Adriana" I forced myself to say to the huge man towering over me.
His eyes darkened and he looked down at me. "Excuse me?"
Val laughed a bit. "Jeff, the lady said to call her Adriana"
The man sized me up slowly. "Well the lady isn’t getting her way here" he huffed under his breath, returning his attention to Valentina who shook her head at me.
I sighed and knitted my hands together, listening in on their conversation about some stupid underground fight.
Val seemed very much comfortable with the people here but me? I did not. They did not even want to get to know me. They all stayed the hell away from me and regarded me from afar. I couldn’t blame them. I was nothing like them.
Suddenly Jeff looked at me again. "Have you been to an underground fight?" He asked, his eyes glimmering with curiosity.
"Uhh no" I muttered, unsure why he was asking.
Almost immediately, his eyes dimmed again and he huffed. "Princess..." he huffed under his breath again.
That got my attention and I felt mad at that. "Excuse me?"
He looked at me and shook his head. "Nothing, ma’am. Val, I should go. See there?" Val nodded and he went off with a carefree stride.
Val turned back to look at me and She shook her head. "Why do you wanna socialize with the men so bad?" She asked, ushering me back to sit.
I frowned at that. She was right. Why did I want to socialize with the guards so badly? Maybe because they would stop following my every move and they would learn to trust me and besides maybe one of them might even help me leave this goddamn place.
"say... I know they have ranks so...which one is the most powerful one?" I asked, leaning in closer.
Vincenzo had said he would be gone for a week at least and he had been gone for about 2 days meaning I still had a few more days to try what I had in mind without disturbances.
"I see you’ve done your research" She let out a soft smile. "To answer your question, it would be the..."
"Cavalieri"
"Cavalieri," we both said at the same time.
She tilted her head at me. "Wow....you have done research. Why do you want to know anyway?" She inquired.
I couldn’t tell her. I couldn’t explain that I just found a new plan.
The Cavalieri. My next target.
