Chapter 54: COUNTDOWN

ADRIANA’S POV

"Is he gonna come?" A muffled voice in my consciousness sounded.

I stirred, my body limp and my head facing downwards. What happened?

"Oh, she’s waking up," Followed by a cackle and the sound of a door shutting.

I shot up with a start, breathing heavily, my eyelids drooping as I tried to make sense of where I was, but my mind was still hazy, and I felt a headache.

"Who...who are you?" My eyes zeroed in on the man who was standing in front of me, a black trench coat enveloping his entire frame easily.

He had a mask on with gloves and he was staring down at me with a condescending gaze. "Finally took you enough time to come through, huh?"

I groaned, a whimper escaping my lips as I tried to move only to figure out that I was tied to a chair. God damnit!. "Fuck you," I groaned, throwing my head back, feeling too weak to even try to struggle against the ropes beginning to dig into my skin.

"You’ve got such a large mouth, but I wonder how you’re gonna be reacting in a short time." The man adjusted the black gloves on his hand, and I used the time to look around me.

The place was dark and smelt horribly of smoke. I caught a glimpse of a small lantern in the corner illuminating the place in a soft glow. The place was filled with scattered items around, and it looked a total mess, yet it didn’t feel like this was his first time here. Everything had been strategically arranged, and that’s when I noticed that there were wires peeking out from the side of the chair that I was sitting down on.

My eyes widened in horror and I immediately began to jerk against the chair, my strength suddenly renewed. "Mother fucker!" I yelled, breathing heavily, sweat dripping down my forehead when I realized I couldn’t move and the knots only seemed to become even tighter the more I struggled.

He only chuckled, his eyes darkening above the black mask he wore before he dragged a chair and sat down in front of me.

"Do you want to call me the villain of the story when I just want to avenge who your husband stole from me?", he asked, his tone turning murderous as he stared at me.

My mind was reeling and I felt my heart pounding in my ribcage, the air suddenly feeling suffocating instead of relieving. "Who are you?"

"An old friend of your husband"

"Friend?" I hissed at him, feeling my hair matted to my face due to sweat.

He shrugged and crossed his legs. He was the only one with me inside this room, but somehow I knew there were other people outside or something. The man wasn’t even carrying a gun, but I knew he wasn’t unarmed; there had to be a weapon out of sight.

"It depends on whatever you want to term our relationship because I am truly happy to see him. He couldn’t just expect to get rid of me, did he?" The man thought hard about something then he looked at me again. "You know how long I waited for an opportunity like this? I was almost tempted to take the black-haired one, you know? That’s how desperate I was"

Val.

He continued talking almost immediately. "But then the bitch would be harder, she didn’t climb that high in their ranks for nothing. I don’t want to deal with more problems than necessary. She’s changed from what I know but she’s still got that fighting spirit from when I knew her years ago, bitch" He spat. "She should have ended up like the others who I took"

I was silent, trying to take in the information he was telling me but his next words made my blood run cold and bile rush up in my throat.

"Did you get my gift in the cabin?" I couldn’t see his face but I knew he was grinning wildly. "Oh, you look like you’ve seen a ghost, I take it that you did see my gift. The others I took... you’ll find them... just like that. My word of honor" The man put his hand to his chest in a mocking manner.

"You sick psycho!" I screamed, my throat already feeling parched. He was the one who had killed the girl? What kind of sick fuck would do that? Well, I was looking right at one.

He raised his hands in mock surrender. "Name-calling now, Adriana? What makes your husband and I any different? We both kill and sometimes innocent people get caught in the crossfire, just like you did now. So why’s he any less of a psycho?" He leaned forward in his seat, his eyes narrowing.

"Just kill me" I leaned my head back, my legs feeling cramped already.

The man pulled out a small box in his hand and nodded. "1 hour. You get that much. If it doesn’t work how I wanted it, I’ll just have to make do with you, hm?" He pushed a button in the box and a faint ticking sound reached my ears.

My heart lurched as I realized that the chair I was sitting in had a bomb attached to it. "Son of a bitch. Why don’t you just shoot me?" Anger filled my tone as I stared at him.

I was terrified, but somehow, I couldn’t bring myself to beg for my life anymore. I had left the house on my own will, no one had probably even noticed that I was missing. It was still midnight after all.

"Because that’d be a waste of my bullet. I’m not here for you, bitch." He growled at me.

The door pushed open, and someone with a mask around his face stepped in, too, nodding to the man sitting in front of me. "Boss, he’s an hour away. Alone as said"

He left immediately after he delivered the message, and my eyes widened. Who was an hour away?

"Oh, your husband is finally joining the party" The man sitting in front of me gleefully said as he stood up from the chair, circling me.

"Son of a bitch! Don’t you dare! Just fucking kill me!" I screamed, thrashing in the chair, and my strength suddenly renewed.

"Shh... Can’t have you behaving this wild in front of him now, can we?" I heard the man’s voice from behind me before something hard hit my head again.

"F...fuck... you" I managed to whisper before the darkness claimed me.
