Sold to the Capo-Chapter 59: DEAD MAN WALKING
ADRIANA’S POV
"Vincenzo?" Master LaRosa repeated after me, his eyes wide with shock. That was the most reaction I had ever gotten from the man, and it was because his son, who he thought dead, was standing right here in front of us but I couldn’t tell if he was shocked because he was happy or because he was angry that it ruined his plans.
"Missed me that much?" Vincenzo still had his gun trained on his father who didn’t bat an eye at it.
I quickly scrambled to Salvatore’s side as he had a gun aimed at Master LaRosa, too, even though he also looked shocked at the turn of events.
Val, behind Vincenzo, was also pointing her gun at each of Master LaRosa’s guards, daring them to shoot Vincenzo.
"You died..." Master LaRosa said, his voice coming out in confusion.
Vincenzo nodded to the man. "Tell your men to stand down and we’ll talk"
Master LaRosa frowned and looked at his men like he had only just realized that they were planning on shooting his son. "Stand down" he ordered, raising a hand.
No one seemed to care that there was a dying man on the ground, splurging up blood. I also refused to look down at Ravolo who was taking shaky breaths, a groan escaping his lips.
My gaze was trained on Vincenzo, but he wasn’t looking at me; he was looking at his father, gauging him to know his next move. Master LaRosa simply went to sit again, ordering his men to take Ravolo away and get him patched up.
Everyone tucked their guns back and Vincenzo wobbled over, a wince on his face with each step he took. Something had happened to his left leg; he was leaning heavily on it even though he tried to hide it by trying to even his steps, but I knew.
Master LaRosa also cast a glance at the leg, but he didn’t bring it up, though his eyes narrowed.
I quickly stood up and moved away for Vincenzo to take my seat next to Salvatore while I sat with Val on the other side when Master LaRosa looked at his men.
"Take her out. We’re having a private discussion" he ordered his man nonchalantly.
The Caucasian man nodded and turned to me just as Vincenzo opened his mouth to protest but I beat them both to it. I was fucking tired.
I finally pulled the gun out and pointed it at the guard who immediately halted, not expecting me to have a weapon. "One more step, and I’ll shoot," I warned, keeping my hands from shaking.
Master LaRosa frowned at that and he looked at Vincenzo with a surprised look. "You’re gonna have to explain that" He pointed at me.
Vincenzo looked at me with an almost proud look and gestured for me to sit. "She stays. That’s final"
Master LaRosa didn’t bother to argue, he just looked me over again as I tucked the gun back and sat down beside Val.
"It’s been too long since I’ve been away but I wasn’t in the right state to come back. I was unconscious for a day" Vincenzo began his explanation while we all stared at him.
"How did you escape the warehouse?" Master LaRosa asked all of a sudden.
"I was able to beat the man who wanted to tie me to the chair, and I knocked him unconscious and then tied him to the chair instead, but I wasn’t able to get too far before the explosive. Just a few burns not to mention the gunshot wound
Some woman saw me and took me into her house to treat me. That’s where I’ve been" Vincenzo explained to his father.
"What were you even doing in the warehouse?", his father demanded, his voice level.
My heart began to pound, no one told Master LaRosa that I was the real reason, everyone had kept it away and as far as I knew, the Cavalieri were the only ranks that knew what actually happened as they were Vincenzo’s closest guards so they deserved to know but this man here didn’t know and I don’t think I wanted him to know.
"I was looking for the person who attacked you, Father. I was coming back here when I spotted a trail of blood on the path leading to that place, so I immediately went to check it out," Vincenzo lied easily.
Master LaRosa looked round at the small gathering and he shook his head. "Stupid" He muttered under his breath. "What did it have to do with Ravolo, though?"
Vincenzo grinned at that. "I happened to find out through Val today when she found me when I was walking back to this place where my body had been found. I told her to dig into it properly and just before we got here, we found out that my dear cousin had the reports messed up so he could take over. Tough luck, eh?"
"Who’s the woman you stayed with?"
"Unfortunately I’m not giving out her name or location for her safety. She helped me, that’s all that matters" Vincenzo replied, his tone now serious.
Master LaRosa scrutinized him slowly before he spoke up. "I’ll look into Ravolo and make sure he receives the punishment deserved".
My stomach dropped at that because if I was right then that would mean death. Traitors were killed in this world. The thought of that made me queasy, I hated the man but the way they kept throwing the topic of death around so casually was something that I could never get used to.
"You probably need some days to rest. Allow Salvatore to lead in that case until you’re well rested then" His father suggested.
Vincenzo looked rather taken aback at that and my guess was that this was the first time his father had shown some sort of concern for him.
With that, Master LaRosa stood up and looked at me. "Ah, the important question before I forget. What is she doing with a gun?" He hissed, looking at me like I was something dirty.
Vincenzo looked over at me for a split second before returning his attention back to his father. "We’re in terrible times, and there have been several attempts on us, definitely more than I consider just a fluke. It’s just a precautionary measure and it’s only given to her when it’s dire. I’ll take it back immediately" Vincenzo announced, looking over at me before stretching his hand out to me to drop my gun into his hand.
My eyes widened. Did he really expect me to give up the only source of protection I had in this place? However, the look on his face made me know that he wasn’t joking.
"Seriously?" I hissed, loud enough for them to hear me.
He raised a brow, the expression on his face unchanging. "Hand It over" he ordered.
At that point, every relief I felt at his return turned into something else. Anger.
With a curse, I pulled out the gun and placed it in his hand. "There" I muttered under my breath.
He took it and placed it on the table, his gaze returning back to Master LaRosa who nodded at it. "I believe I deserve some rest before I address my ranks so..." He nodded to the door.
His father nodded and looked over at his guards, signaling to them to move out, which they did. "I’ll send a message later. Get rid of the mess. Salvatore. Follow me," He ordered Salvatore, who immediately stood up after him, Val following immediately. "Not you... Valentina" Master LaRosa glared at her.
She opened her mouth to say something but ultimately decided against it. "Henry, with me," She instead said, looking over at Henry, who I now noticed was staring at Vincenz,o, but I couldn’t tell what was going through his head.
"Of course..." He muttered under his breath, following Valentina out just as Master LaRosa and Salvatore exited also.
Meaning I was left alone with the man who managed to give us all a heart attack.
"What the fuck happened in that warehouse?" I demanded as soon as the door closed.
He chuckled, leaning back lazily on the chair he was sitting on. "I think I already explained in the presence of everyone" he pointed out.
"Yet you’re leaving something out, right? Who was the person who found you?" I demanded to know.
"Some woman called Rose. She lived not too far from there and was in the vicinity when she saw the explosion so she had to go check it out. Luckily, she knew how to patch a wound, and unluckily, she’s not a professional, so I think I got the wound infected." He groaned.
"First, we call the doctor then we talk. Got it?" I asked him, already getting up to go find a doctor.
He watched me as I stood up, his hazel eyes darker than ever. Had they always been this dark? "What? No ’I wish you died in the blast’ nothing?" Vincenzo asked jokingly but there was a hint of seriousness to it.
"I’ll wish you all the death you deserve after we get you patched up," I retorted, but deep down, the relief that I still felt was unimaginable.
He had survived. I didn’t kill him. He was alive.
"True" Vincenzo muttered. "Wait" he called out before I could make it another step.
"What?" I asked impatiently.
He slid the gun he had collected from me across the table and nodded to it. "Might need that back"
Smiling to myself despite the stoic expression on my face, I took the pistol back, feeling the heavy weight in my hand.
"Thanks" I muttered under my breath before I walked out.
