Chapter 125 - Serpent prince game

The palace had never felt so cold.

Despite the blazing sun outside, a shiver wrapped itself around everyone inside the throne room. Cain stood at the center, fingers clenched tightly around the pommel of his sword. His expression was unreadable, though the twitch in his jaw betrayed the fury simmering just beneath his skin.

Selene stood at his side, her hand resting gently on his shoulder. She was a vision of calm, though her eyes—sharp, calculating—never stopped moving, scanning every window, every shadow, every flicker of movement.

The twins, Azrael Jr. and Caelan, stood flanking the doors like twin guardians, their youthful faces hard with grim determination. Rina sat on the stairs, chewing on candied ginger and swinging her legs like she hadn't nearly made a war criminal cry the day before.

"You think the Serpent's bluffing?" Eren asked from his spot near the fire.

"No," Cain said simply. "He dug up our mother."

"Correction," Rina chirped, "He stole ghost grandma. That's super disrespectful. I give it a seven out of ten on the Villain Scale."

Leo raised an eyebrow. "Only a seven?"

Rina popped another candy in her mouth. "He hasn't monologued in Latin yet. That's how you know it's serious."

The doors creaked open.

A soldier stumbled in, blood trailing down his forehead. "Your Majesties—he's here. The Serpent Prince. He's in the Great Hall."

No one moved.

Until Cain did.

He walked slowly to the doors. The others followed—Selene, the twins, Leo, Eren, Eira, and Rina skipping behind, grinning like she was headed to a tea party with ghosts.

They reached the Great Hall and found him.

Seraphis.

He stood beneath the stained glass window of Isolde, the sun painting his face in fractured light. He was tall, dressed in robes of black and gold. His features were hauntingly familiar—Isolde's eyes, Cain's jawline, and yet something far colder rested behind his gaze.

"You came," Seraphis said with a smile, as if this were a reunion rather than a confrontation.

"Where is her body?" Cain asked, voice like ice.

"She's with me," Seraphis answered. "And at peace. For now."

"You're lying," Selene growled.

"Oh, sweetheart," he grinned, "I lie beautifully, but this? This is all truth."

Eira stepped forward. "Why reveal yourself now?"

Seraphis tilted his head. "Because you all finally look like a family. And that's exactly what I want to destroy."

Caelan's power surged at his fingertips. Azrael Jr. clenched his fists, fire rising around his shoes.

"You won't win," Cain said flatly.

"I don't have to," Seraphis replied. "I just have to make you choose. Between your crown and your blood. Between vengeance and peace. Between loyalty and truth."

He snapped his fingers.

And behind him, a coffin slowly floated in, encased in black magic, Isolde's face barely visible through the crystal lid.

Rina gasped. "He actually brought her. Ew."

Seraphis stepped away, spreading his arms.

"Bring your war. Defend your throne. But know this: The more you fight me, the more you will become me."

Then he vanished.

A hiss. A flicker. Smoke and shadow swallowed him whole.

Silence. Except for the heavy breathing of the living.

Cain walked forward, gently resting his hand on the glass above his mother's heart.

"We bring her back," he whispered. "We bring her peace."

"And then we burn him," Azrael Jr. added.

"No," Selene said, her hand finding Cain's. "We end him. For good."

And in the shadows, the serpent coiled once more—ready to strike again.

The Great Hall emptied slowly, save for those whose blood carried the weight of destiny.

Cain stood frozen by the crystal coffin, one hand pressed flat against the surface as if he could feel his mother's warmth through the cold. Selene didn't say a word—she simply stood beside him, a quiet fortress.

The others watched in tense silence. Azrael Jr. and Caelan stood like statues, though their eyes darted with rage. Rina, unusually quiet, had her arms crossed with a fierce scowl on her face, candy forgotten in her pocket.

Leo was the first to speak.

"We can't bury her yet," he murmured. "That bastard—he tied her soul to his curse. If we lay her to rest like this..."

"She'll never truly sleep," Eira finished, voice soft but broken. "We have to free her."

Rina suddenly turned, snapping her fingers. "Wait! If ghost grandma's soul is tied up, that means we need to cut the link. Like... magically unplugging a soul USB."

Eren blinked. "What?"

"She's right," Selene said, ignoring the confusion. "It's old necromancy. A soul tether. We sever it, we free her."

"But he wants us to come after him," Caelan growled. "He's baiting us with her. That's low—even for a snake."

Cain finally turned. His eyes were a storm.

"Then we do what serpents hate most," he said. "We strike clean, fast—and without fear."

Rina grinned wide. "Oh, we're gonna be so disrespectfully chaotic."

Selene sighed. "Rina..."

"What? Let me be dangerous. It's my charm."

As the coffin was carefully moved to the inner sanctum beneath protection spells, the family gathered in the war room. The map of the kingdom was sprawled before them, now marked with symbols of Seraphis' spread—black fires and cursed woods, corrupted rivers, and villages haunted by silence.

Cain placed a dagger down on the center.

"He thinks he can pull us apart like threads. He's wrong. We're not unraveling."

"We're braiding," Eren said with a smirk. "Stronger together."

Leo nodded. "And he's out of time."

Selene turned to the twins. "Azrael, Caelan—you'll train with me. No holding back."

The twins exchanged a look, then nodded.

"And I get Rina," Eira added with a mock groan. "Heaven help us."

"YAY!" Rina jumped onto the table, nearly knocking over the map. "Let's go ruin his whole bloodline!"

Cain couldn't help the faint smirk that tugged at the corner of his mouth.

The serpent may have coiled.

But they were the fire.

The blade.

The storm.

And they were coming.
