Chapter 36 - the distance between us

The storm outside wasn't natural. It wasn't the kind summoned by clouds or wind. It was something darker—something ancient. Thunder cracked like bones snapping and lightning split the sky like a jagged curse. Inside the mansion, the tension was just as violent.

Cain stood at the window, arms folded, his jaw clenched so tightly that his teeth ached. His eyes scanned the storm but his mind... his mind was with Selene.

She had left.

Vanished after that awful moment—Eira's desperate, forceful kiss and Selene's shattered expression. Cain could still feel her pain like a second skin. She had run, and no one knew where to. Not even Leo, with all his tracking magic, could find her.

"I swear," Cain muttered, voice low and ragged, "if something happens to her..."

Behind him, the room was silent except for the occasional rustle of Eren flipping through one of the demonic history tomes. He hadn't spoken much since the betrayal, his face tight with guilt. Eira sat alone by the fireplace, hugging her knees, eyes fixed on the flames. She hadn't spoken either—not since Cain had shouted at her. Not since Leo had refused to even look her way.

Suddenly, the house shifted. A low pulse thrummed through the floorboards, as if the very walls were alive and trembling.

"Did you feel that?" Leo asked, rising from the far corner of the library. His violet eyes narrowed, glowing faintly. "That wasn't just magic. That was her."

Eren was already moving. "Mother."

They raced down the hallway, Cain barely remembering to breathe. They burst into the dark chamber where their mother had been asleep for years—trapped in a stasis of her own magic to protect her from the curse their father left behind.

But now, she was awake.

A glowing aura surrounded her frail form, her long silver hair spread over the pillows like moonlight. Her eyes, once shut tight in a deathlike sleep, were open now—golden and burning.

She turned slowly, her gaze landing on her sons. "My boys..."

Cain dropped to his knees. "Mother—"

She sat up fully, swaying slightly. Her voice, though weak, was commanding. "The prophecy... it's begun. He's coming."

Eren's mouth tightened. "Who?"

She looked up at the ceiling like she could see through the stone. "Your father's successor. One of the last loyal to his throne. He doesn't want you to live. He doesn't want you to be kings."

Cain stood. "Let him come. I'll burn his whole realm."

Leo stepped forward, voice calm but strained. "Before we rush into war, we need to find Selene."

Their mother's gaze shifted. "The girl... she carries light. She's important to you."

Cain nodded, slowly. "She's everything."

But before more could be said, a crash echoed from outside.

A shadow creature burst into the courtyard—giant, twisted, with horns and a skeletal face wrapped in smoke. Behind it, more emerged from the fog. The first wave of the enemy had arrived.

Eira stood, guilt and fear swirling in her eyes. "We need to fight."

Cain's fists blazed with hellfire. "No. I need to fight."

Their mother rose, her body still weak but her hands glowing. She placed her palm on Cain's shoulder, warmth spreading through him. "You won't fight alone."

Outside, the courtyard erupted into chaos as the brothers leaped into battle—Cain's fire clashing against shadow, Eren summoning barriers of raw demonic energy, and Leo moving like a ghost, blades slicing through the dark.

But in the background, a figure watched—hooded and silent, a smirk curling his lips. The real enemy. Not the creatures. The one who sent them. A brother.

A betrayal.

And somewhere, far from the fire and fight, Selene sat under the stars, clutching the ring Cain gave her.

Whispering, "Come find me..."
