Chapter 69 - training grounds

The sun had barely risen when Cain shook Selene gently awake. Her lashes fluttered, adjusting to the early light filtering through the curtains.

"Already?" she murmured, voice raspy with sleep.

"Time to start," he said with a small smile, brushing a strand of hair from her cheek. "You said you wanted to be ready."

Selene sat up, groaning as she stretched. "I didn't think you meant sunrise training sessions like we're in some kind of supernatural boot camp."

He grinned. "Welcome to the family."

In the clearing behind Aelira's safehouse, the boys had cleared space, marking off an area with stones and branches. Leo was already there, shirt off, warming up with slow punches that caused the air around his fists to shimmer faintly. Eren had conjured tiny flames, juggling them lazily like fireballs of boredom.

"Selene," Leo greeted with a nod. "You're late."

"She needed beauty sleep," Cain said, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "Not all of us roll out of bed looking like cursed royalty."

Eren smirked. "We ready for a beatdown or what?"

Selene took a deep breath and stepped into the ring.

They started small—Cain showing her how to control breath before channeling energy. He guided her fingers, reminded her to focus not on force, but intention. When she closed her eyes and released the first pulse, the earth beneath her trembled.

Eren nearly tripped. "Okay, she's not playing."

Selene blinked. "Did I do that?"

"You did," Cain said, pride obvious in his voice.

It continued for hours. She practiced deflecting small attacks, learning how to summon the inner strength that had once overwhelmed her. There were missteps—Eren singed his shirt when she panicked and redirected his fireball, and Leo accidentally levitated her three feet into the air out of reflex.

They laughed. They teased. They bled.

But above all, they grew stronger.

Later, as the sun began to fall, Selene sat beside Cain by the river. Her hair was damp with sweat, face flushed from exhaustion, but her eyes were bright.

"I never thought I'd feel this... powerful," she said quietly.

Cain looked at her. "You've always had it. Now you're just learning to own it."

She turned to him, their knees brushing. "Are you scared?"

"All the time," he admitted. "But not when I'm with you."

Their lips met softly. A kiss that wasn't rushed or hungry—but warm and grounding. The kind of kiss that says: we're in this together.

From a distance, Aelira watched silently, arms crossed.

Behind her, Leo leaned on a tree. "They're disgusting."

"They're in love," Aelira corrected.

Leo snorted. "Same thing."

"Jealous?" she teased.

He rolled his eyes. "Please. Love makes you stupid."

Eren strolled up holding a half-eaten peach. "That's rich, coming from the guy who still dreams about the demon girl who cursed his boots."

They all laughed.

But the laughter was short-lived.

In the shadows, something stirred.

And far from the safehouse, in the smoking remains of a ruined village, a figure with glowing eyes knelt, whispering ancient words into the ashes. Preparing for the reckoning to come.
