Han Fei was caught off guard by Xiao Lin's imposing presence. As he tried to step back, he unexpectedly bumped into something. Turning around in haste, he realized that the police officers he had brought along were already subdued by a group of people. Leading them was a man wearing a military cap, standing silently behind him.

"Who are you people?" Han Fei shouted at the suddenly appearing team.

The man behind him paid no heed to his questioning. He walked up to Xiao Lin and, standing at ease with one foot, saluted him with a crisp military gesture. "Major General!"

Xiao Lin showed an impatient expression towards him. "You're late."

"Not really. Just a little while. You should have managed fine." The newcomer was none other than Hua Qingyi. He took off his cap and stylishly brushed back his long hair, which the military cap had slightly ruffled.

Xiao Lin, disinclined to respond, handed the child over to others and walked directly to Han Fei. "Didn't I tell you that you would be my first open meat?"

Hua Qingyi shook his head at Han Fei upon hearing this. Although it wasn't out of sympathy, there was certainly no hope left. Han Fei felt overwhelmed. What kind of tough nut had he hit? The orders only required him to return the child without mentioning who the opposition was. "Who the hell are you?"

"You don't need to know who I am. Just know that I can act first and report later." Xiao Lin eyed the now-sweating Han Fei with amusement. "Gun or blade, pick one."

"No, you can't kill me. I'm the chief of the police department." Only then did Han Fei realize who they were, and could the man before him be the successor of the Xiao Family? Suddenly, he felt powerless; his legs could no longer support him, and he collapsed to the ground. "You can't do this."

"He can!" Hua Qingyi confirmed regretfully to Han Fei.

"Wait, I..." Han Fei ran a few steps toward Xiao Lin. "I... I'm willing to cooperate."

Xiao Lin halted his steps and turned around. "Unfortunately, your information is worthless to me." Hua Qingyi hesitated more than Xiao Lin did, thinking that as a chief, he must know more than that division head!

"Take him away and deal with him directly." However, since Xiao Lin said he didn't need it, he naturally had his reasons. In such a scenario, he wouldn't contradict Xiao Lin's decision.

The incident unfolded instantly. Two people dragged Han Fei to a secluded place. Without a word, they slashed his throat, and he silently fell into a pool of blood. No one was unshaken, nor did anyone question it, yet no one dared to ask.

"To handle a police chief so rashly, isn't that a bit arrogant?" Hua Qingyi stood under a tree, lit a cigarette, and passed one to Xiao Lin.

"Ah! A bit, but without killing this man, I can't get things done." In hindsight, it did carry a hint of provocation. Although Dragon Soul had never dealt with a high-ranking official in such a manner before, historically, such acts of preemptive action and subsequent reporting had only occurred once or twice, not counting this time.

"Kill the chicken to scare the monkey?" Hua Qingyi understood. This was merely the beginning for him, dropping a heavy bomb on the North District, showing that they don't refrain from killing; it just hadn't been necessary until now. "You're making it difficult for me!"

"With nobody there, merging it isn't bad." Xiao Lin had long foreseen this outcome. The North District wasn't large, and with more students coming to the capital, along with many drifters, "Demolishing this place could expand Xuefu Road, wouldn't that be another revenue stream?"

"Hmm, I have thought about this, but hadn't planned to act so soon. Since you've pushed up the schedule, then so be it!" Hua Qingyi dismissed it with a wave. Unlike his father, he believed that overripe opportunities lead to fewer chances. "What about Han Fei's body?"

"Drag it to the funeral home and notify the family to collect the body." Xiao Lin contemplated. "As for the reason, let the people from the North District figure it out. Just inform them that it was done by Dragon Soul; they should know how to handle the aftermath."

"You really are irresponsible!" Hua Qingyi shrugged his shoulders. This kind of aftermath was now his task. "What about the child..."

"Can't be placed in the hospital. Find a safe location." Xiao Lin glanced at the sky overhead, dusting off his clothes. It was almost time to report in. "Once you arrange it, call me. I'll bring someone over."

"Got it."

Dealing with Han Fei was a bit impulsive and not part of his plan. Xiao Lin strolled down the street; the distance from the kindergarten to Zhang Qian's residence was not far. He believed she must have heard about the kidnapping incident that occurred here but, taking the perspective of a mother into account, she didn't show up at the scene of the incident. Isn't that a bit odd?

As Xiao Lin walked, he pondered over this issue. Perhaps the comforting thought was that she hadn't received news of it yet, but he dismissed it. Accelerating his pace inexplicably, he arrived in front of Zhang Qian's residence.

The door was ajar. Xiao Lin placed his hand against it, and the iron door swung open with just a push. This situation set off alarm bells in his mind. He quietly entered the room; the gas stove in the kitchen still had a pot simmering. The flame was off. Gauging the temperature with his finger, it hadn't been long since the fire was extinguished, and the kitchen looked orderly as well.

"Officer Wu!" Xiao Lin tried calling out Wu Shuang's name at the door, but no one inside answered him.

With a swift movement, he rushed in. Wu Shuang was lying on the ground, and the person on the bed had vanished without a trace. Xiao Lin picked up Wu Shuang and lightly tested her breathing with his finger on her nose. She was merely unconscious and not in serious trouble. "Wu Shuang, wake up!" Xiao Lin gently shook her, but she did not wake. Placing Wu Shuang temporarily on the bed, Xiao Lin drew open the curtains. The room showed no signs of struggle; the clothes that were originally hung on the window had been taken down, folded neatly, and placed to the side, and the green plants had been watered and fertilized.

Xiao Lin picked up a leaf and sniffed it at his nose, expressing confusion. He emptied the water from the teapot, fished out the leaves inside, and sneered coldly.

He grabbed the person from the bed and headed out the door.

The Zhang Qian they found might be a fake, and the child he just rescued could also be fake. The leaves brewed in the teapot were from the Mandala plant. Xiao Lin blamed himself for not paying attention to those plants from the start. The opponent smartly brewed another pot of tea after he left, knowing he would not fail to notice such a fragrance.

"Where are you?" Xiao Lin dialed Hua Qingyi, as he urgently needed to find the child's location.

"At the North District Police Station. The doctor you took from the hospital is unconscious." Hua Qingyi had just wanted to call Xiao Lin, having received news that the person was in a deep coma. "Do you want to come take a look? I suspect there's little hope he will wake up."

"I'll head over now."

As Xiao Lin carried Wu Shuang a few steps, his keen perception made him aware of the surrounding watchful eyes. He sensed they were being led by someone in the open, and the feeling was not good.

The North District Police Station suddenly became lively. A station without a director was already odd, and now many unrelated individuals had arrived. The crowd gathered inside the station whispered among themselves.

As Xiao Lin entered the station carrying Wu Shuang, he couldn't help but be startled by the number of people at the entrance. "Excuse me, please make way." Attempting to clear a path at the entrance, Xiao Lin squeezed his way in while greeting those around.

"Look, another one, this time it's a woman." Hearing such comments at his ear made Xiao Lin want to laugh.

"Indeed, I've been saying this place isn't lucky. Look at all that's happened over the past month, how many have died."

Rumors buzzing ceaselessly grew increasingly bizarre as Xiao Lin finally reached the police station lobby. "Why are there so many people outside?"

"Couldn't deal with it in time. What's wrong with her?"

"Not sure. She probably drank something she shouldn't have, she'll be fine after waking."

"What about Zhang Qian?"

"We might have been deceived." Xiao Lin was still unsure whether the person they encountered was Zhang Qian. Emotionally, it seemed so, but why drug Wu Shuang? The key issue was where the person was now.

"What do you mean?"

"Did you verify the child's identity?" Xiao Lin didn't answer Hua Qingyi directly; the child's identity was relatively more crucial than Zhang Qian herself.

"Verification was done immediately. He is indeed Zhang Qian's son and has been taken to the nearby Sharp Sword Team for safekeeping." The journey from here to Dragon Soul was long, and if he didn't personally accompany, he'd worry something might go wrong. The child's presence plays a critical role for him, Xiao Lin, and the entire situation. The only one who can explain things now is Zhang Qian.

"That's peculiar then!" Xiao Lin recounted the events of finding Zhang Qian with Wu Shuang to Hua Qingyi. Back then, the person they found was genuinely Zhang Qian, and her feelings towards the child and Zhang Qiang were authentic. When was the switch made?

"You're saying Wu Shuang was drugged by Zhang Qian, and by the time you arrived, the person had disappeared."

"The opponent merely dazed Wu Shuang without causing her any harm. Currently, I can't confirm if the person before and after is the same." During the middle, Zhang Qian was in the kitchen making tea; it was a period of absence. Though brief, it was sufficient for them to alternate. "The Zhang Qian appearing afterwards became very emotional when asked about Zhang Qiang."

"Emotions can be faked." Hua Qingyi felt compelled to remind Xiao Lin. With deliberate craft, one can see genuine feelings, much like film actors. "The child is in our hands. If Zhang Qian knows, she'll come looking for us."

Xiao Lin shook his head, still baffled by one aspect. (To be continued. If you like this work, please visit Qidian (qidian.com) to vote with recommendation and monthly tickets. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
