With eyes brimming with tears, she stared unwaveringly at the elderly person in front of her, and after a long pause, a little bit of fragmented sound came out from her trembling lips. "Why?"

The elderly man purposely avoided looking at the girl who was now drenched in tears, and pushed the bankbook in front of her. "Guo Guo, our time together ends here. This money is enough for you to buy a house and live for some time."

Guo Guo knew how much money was in the bankbook, not only could she buy a house, she could buy two such apartments and still have some leftover. "I don't want it!" She threw the bankbook back at the old man. "I want to know why you want to send me away!"

"You are someone I picked up on the street. We've lived together for many years, it can be considered fate. I won't live much longer, you should go find your own life to live, and don't bother me."

"Grandpa, it's too late for you to find me annoying now. I will not leave you, no matter what you say." Guo Guo stubbornly stood in front of the old man. "I know it's because of those people earlier, but I won't leave you."

The elderly man said nothing. He stuffed the bankbook back in Guo Guo's pocket and pushed her roughly towards the door. "Stop with the nonsense, get out, I don't want to see you again!"

"I refuse to go!" Guo Guo wasn't about to be easily pushed out. She held tightly onto the solid wood cabinet against the wall, her foot braced on the wall, resulting in a tug-of-war with the old man. "Grandfather, why do they want to capture you? I won't be scared, but I must stay with you."

To show her determination, Guo Guo took advantage of the old man's moment of hesitation and resolutely sat down on the floor, her back against the door. Faced with such a stubborn girl, the old man had no idea what to do, and the two had a big staring contest. But no matter how determined Guo Guo was, she couldn't move the old man.

"There is no room for negotiation, today you must leave, otherwise don't blame me for being rude." The old man threw down his final harsh words before turning and entering his room, slamming the door behind him, ignoring Guo Guo sitting outside. He was resolute in his decision to make her leave.

Guo Guo cried bitterly, feeling abandoned, as if she were a child being deserted by her family. She never thought that, more than a decade later, she would be abandoned again. Looking at the empty hall, her grandfather would no longer be like a child arguing with her about going out, wouldn't spend an hour with her complaining about a meal that didn't taste good, or play games with her when she was bored. That grandfather wouldn't be there anymore.

With her hands in her pockets, she felt a hard object—it was the bankbook. Her eyes turned red again; no one understood her grandfather better than she did. Staring at the tightly shut door, she stood up, placed the bankbook on the table, and rushed out the door.

The old man waited until he heard the door slam before coming out from his room. His expressionless face twitched slightly as his gaze fell on the bankbook. Guo Guo's stubbornness was something they both understood. She hadn't brought anything when she first entered this home, and she wouldn't take anything when she left; that's Guo Guo.

The old man sat alone on the sofa for a long time, then pulled a long object out of a worn-out box. He unwrapped layer after layer until a shiny corner of metal was exposed. "Ultimately, it's all because of you, such a thing, that I have to return to the world!" After wrapping the object again and putting it back in the box, the old man went into the bathroom. When he came out again, he had completely changed his appearance.

Shou stopped halfway, an intuition told him he must return, so he went back to where he had stood before, facing the entrance of the neighborhood. His intuition was right, if he had been off by half a minute, he might not have had the chance to encounter her.

"Hey, why are you all alone?" Shou saw the girl coming out of the neighborhood with a bag in her hand and followed her. "Where's your grandfather?"

Guo Guo remembered him; he had saved her earlier that afternoon and didn't seem like a bad person. But she wasn't in the mood to talk, her mind was a mess.

"Hmm? Are you running away from home?" Shou noticed the girl wasn't speaking and just kept walking forward, so he grabbed her. "Don't wander around, what's going on?"

"Why are you following me!" Guo Guo was startled by Shou's sudden move and stood still, glaring at the young man. "Tell me, are you like those people who want to capture my grandfather? I'm telling you, don't think of using me; it's useless."

Ugh... Shou suddenly felt embarrassed. In front of this young girl, all the tricks he had thought to use seemed despicable. Seeing her eyes redden, he crouched down in front of her. "Your grandfather kicked you out?"

"How did you know?" Guo Guo showed confusion; how did he guess?

"Isn't it obvious?"

"You don't look like a bad person. Can you temporarily give me a place to stay?" Guo Guo thought if they intended to capture Grandpa, she might as well embrace it first, then perhaps she could find out what they wanted to do, and Grandpa could...

"Stop overthinking, I'm not here to capture your grandfather. If I say I'm here to protect him, would you believe me?" Shou gave her a playful knock on the head. Didn't his boss say this girl had long been dealing with those drug dealers? How could she be so simple-minded? Was she just pretending?

"You saved me, so I'll temporarily believe you. But you have to explain why they're trying to capture my grandfather and why you're saving him." Guo Guo wasn't naive. While she trusted this young man a bit, it didn't mean she would follow him blindly.

"That, I cannot disclose, but you should know someone will tell you. Until then, you need to stay with me for safety." Shou didn't plan to leave the neighborhood; those who left hadn't returned, and the assassin, who wasn't found, could come back at any time; he couldn't risk it. "By the way, since you live here, can you take me inside?"

"I can, but why should I let you in?" Guo Guo wiped her face, nearly letting her tears fall again.

"You said I'm here to protect you, right? If I don't go in, how can I protect you? Moreover, the Big Fatty wasn't the main culprit, the real assassin is still lurking in the shadows. Aren't you worried about your grandfather?" Shou ruffled the back of his head. Instead of waiting for his subordinates, he might as well start with this girl.

"Grandpa doesn't want me anymore, so why should I go in?"

"He did it for your own good; don't you know who he is?"

"He's just my grandfather; what else could he be?" Guo Guo was stumped. She never asked such questions before; she was picked up by him, and they lived together without anything extravagant, naturally passing over a dozen years. "If you don't tell me why you approached Grandpa, I won't take you in." Guo Guo stood with hands on her hips, glaring at Shou angrily.

"Really now!" A vehicle drove out of the neighborhood entrance, and Shou quickly pulled the person standing closest to the road onto the sidewalk, his eyes catching a glimpse of the people in the car, issuing a questioning sound.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing!" After answering briefly, Shou grabbed the bag from Guo Guo's hand!

"Hey, what are you doing?" Guo Guo quickly reacted, snatching her bag back from Shou.

"You wanted to know who your grandfather really is, right? Then come with me."

"I..." Guo Guo suddenly hesitated. Although she trusted the young man a little for saving her, following him still made her afraid.

"Now you're scared? Who just asked if there's a place to stay?" Shou chuckled maliciously, looking at her with a defiant glare. "You got kicked out, do you have money to stay at a hotel?"

Guo Guo shook her head; all she had was a little money from today's shopping spree and a credit card, nothing else.

"Oh, so do you have relatives or friends to stay with?"

Guo Guo still shook her head. How could she have relatives? She originally planned to return to her previous residence, but later remembered that it had been sold off; she truly had nowhere to go.

"Hey, are you about to cry again?" Shou, lacking experience in comforting girls, became flustered seeing Guo Guo's eyes.

"I have no home!" Guo Guo pitifully told Shou.

"Alright, let's go!" Without saying much, Shou temporarily found Guo Guo a room in a hotel near the neighborhood. "Though not as luxurious as your home, it's better than having no bed to sleep in, right?"

"It's pretty good, but I don't have money to pay you back!" Guo Guo dropped her bag and jumped onto the big bed.

"You don't need to worry about that. But I can't always be here with you, so you shouldn't wander around."

"If I don't go out, how will I eat?"

"I'll bring food for you; I won't let you starve." Shou rolled his eyes at her fiercely; until his boss arrived, this girl was his responsibility.

"Okay, I promise I won't leave here." Guo Guo felt not going out wasn't really challenging; living with Grandpa, it had become a habit. If it's not necessary, she absolutely wouldn't leave the house.

"Let's buy some daily necessities; I guess you'll be here for some time."

"Why? Who do you want me to meet?"

"Someone very important to you, probably the only person who can help your grandfather." Shou purposely said this to pique Guo Guo's curiosity, as it was the best way to keep her.

"Hopefully!" Guo Guo, initially happy about having a place to stay, suddenly found herself sinking back into gloom.

Girls' thoughts were something Shou didn't want to guess; to him, be it male or female, they were merely objects to use. (To be continued. If you like this work, please visit Qidian.com to cast recommendation votes or monthly tickets. Your support is my greatest motivation.)
