Special Forces Medic-Chapter 805 - 678: All Kinds of Sharp Questions
In the conference room, there were whispers. A rectangular table was covered with a white tapestry, with two microphones placed on it. Ji Weihua sat beside Yao Zheng, attending as the full representative to face the multitude of journalists below.
"Thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedules to attend this conference regarding the district government hostage incident. Today, we will provide corresponding responses and answers on this matter. After the summary report, you may feel free to ask questions." Yao Zheng placed both hands on the table, holding a microphone in one hand as he surveyed the flash of lights below the stage, seemingly unbothered by the incessant flashes. "Next, we'll have Director Ji Weihua from the Bureau's Criminal Investigation Department give a conclusion. He is the person in charge of this case."
"Hello everyone, I am Ji Weihua from the District Police Bureau's Criminal Investigation Department." Ji Weihua cleared his throat into the microphone.
"Director Ji, may I ask who is behind this hostage incident? Have you apprehended any suspects?" Before Ji Weihua could give a comprehensive explanation of the case after introducing himself, a journalist from a daily newspaper posed a question.
"Haha, this one seems quite eager!" Ji Weihua glanced at the topic in the reporter's hand, identifying him as a journalist from an evening newspaper. "Everyone, there will be time for questions afterward. The district convened this press conference to provide a complete account to you all."
"Let's begin!" Yao Zheng quietly urged Ji Weihua from the side.
"The hostage-takers are an organized and disciplined special unit. They first occupied the district government's monitoring room, killing three personnel on duty, installed signal jammers between the fifth and sixth floors, killed the receptionist on the sixth floor, and infiltrated District Chief Yao's office, intending to kidnap an investor from the municipal committee." Ji Weihua paused here. "Here, we must express our immense gratitude for the investor's bodyguard who provided significant aid during the crisis, averting potentially unthinkable consequences."
The report was brief, taking Ji Weihua only a few minutes to generally describe the incident. He hesitated on whether to provide further explanation, noticing Yao Zheng clasping his hands, his thumbs circling each other. Coughing once, he continued.
"Based on our investigation over the past days, we can confirm that the former President of the Hengfei Group is the orchestrator behind this malicious event. Yan Juanjuan is currently on the run, and we will spare no effort in capturing her and bringing her to justice.
"Lao Xu, what did that Ji Waiwai just say? Yan Juanjuan is the mastermind behind this case? Could this be a mistake?" Shi Shuai stood at the door, blocked by rows of cameras and unable to see inside, yet Ji Weihua's voice was clear. He looked at Xu Ming, astonished at the wild leap in logic. Since when did Ji even investigate this case, especially when Yan Juanjuan disappeared before the incident!"
"Haha, don't interrupt, let's hear what they have to say!" Xu Ming listened with interest, leaning against the door with crossed arms.
Once the press conference started, no additional people were allowed to enter. Hence, their work was not too hectic. Wang Xi and others guarded the main door, while the side doors were also manned.
"Lao Xu, do you think An Geng's disappearance has any connection with them?" Shi Shuai wasn't focused on what was being said inside. The efforts to find An Geng hadn't brought back any useful information, with the last sighting reportedly at the small store opposite the 'Phoenix Feather' club, after which he seemingly vanished.
"We can't yet determine if he is missing; he might have encountered something significant and can't reach us." Xu Ming knew that Shi Shuai and An Geng were roommates, the two having a close bond. He feared Shi Shuai might rashly approach Ji Weihua, so he kept a close watch on him.
"Lao Xu, I plan to look for An Geng once the boss returns. I fear something might happen to him.
"We'll discuss it later." Xu Ming found it hard to respond to Shi Shuai's request. He redirected his attention to the conference room, weaving through the expensive equipment. Ji Weihua was still giving a report filled with irrelevant details, broadly covering how the case would be solved, including vague references to Hengfei Group's involvement in unlawful activities, eliciting astonishment. Xu Ming, standing by with a blank expression, critically observed the journalists, internally scoffing at each line from Ji Weihua.
"Now we will open the floor for questions!" After a lengthy discourse, the press conference had dragged on for about half an hour.
"District Chief Yao, what is your stance on the hostage incident, and how will the innocent casualties in this case be dealt with?" A slightly short and stout female journalist stood up from her seat, her bangs covering her eyes. The microphone in her hand bore no publication mark, nor did it display any media emblem.
"Concerning the companions injured or killed in this incident, my first sentiment is profound regret. Our defensive measures were inadequate, leading to this incident. We will offer the utmost support to the victims' families to compensate for their loss. Regarding my stance on the case, I firmly believe in vigorously prosecuting the criminals, capturing them, and bringing them to justice without exemption." Yao Zheng proclaimed confidently into the microphone, his voice elevated to a near shout, resonating throughout the conference hall.
"District Chief Yao, there is a rumor that you were once romantically involved with President Yan of Hengfei Group during your university years. Will you go easy on them due to this relationship?" Another journalist raised hand.
"Which newspaper are you from? Can rumors be trusted? As a seasoned journalist, you should report factual events, not hearsay." Yao Zheng pointed at the journalist. "It is true that Yan Juanjuan from Hengfei Group and I were university classmates, but this in no way influences my decisions regarding the case. Even if my parents were to commit a crime, they would still face state law's sanctions, with no concessions made for private considerations." Yao Zheng forcefully slapped the table, glaring intensely.
"Is it true you were just university classmates? Someone has reportedly seen you visiting Yan Juanjuan's villa late at night, with photos to prove it. If it's just a classmate relationship, why the night visits? Is there something inappropriate between you?"
"This journalist, please refrain from asking unrelated questions to this case." Ji Weihua glanced at Yao Zheng, whose face had turned stone cold.
"Does this hostage case relate to the previous death of District Police Chief Han Fei, and is Yan Juanjuan seeking revenge?" Luckily another seasoned journalist brought the questions back to the case, easing the awkward atmosphere in the conference hall.
"This possibility exists. The relationship between Yan Juanjuan and her husband is widely known. Hengfei Group was established in Han Fei's name." Ji Weihua exhaled deeply, relieved against the anticipation of more disruptive questions.
"Has the identity of the robbers been confirmed? Can you disclose the identities of rescue personnel who were killed on the spot?"
"Currently, the identities unravelled are a group of mercenaries, with links to Hengfei Group found on them, leading us to suspect Yan Juanjuan's involvement."
"Director Ji earlier used the word suspect; isn't it conclusive now that Hengfei Group is the instigator?"
"We possess eighty percent of the evidence needed to charge her with the crime. Apprehending her will enable case closure." Ji Weihua eyed the journalist, annoyed at the persnickety nature that supersedes even law enforcers, catching any misspoke term.
"It's said that the person rescued this time was a member of an assassin organization. Is there any government connection with this assassin group?"
"This matter is solely an individual action. The investor's bodyguard is not affiliated with government agencies. Still, we appreciate this assassin group for their leader's sudden intervention, which facilitated the lawful force's success in neutralizing the assailants."
"Why was the leader of the assassin organization present in District Chief Yao's office, Director Ji, please explain!"
"Implies a nexus with Dark Forces, and was Han Fei's death due to an uneven division of spoils?"
With questions growing sharper, Yao Zheng's face appeared increasingly grim, as the session originally intended for addressing the hostage case transcended into a pursuit of accusations. Ji Weihua rubbed a single hand over his forehead, in a dilemma—leaving like this would make the media more dissatisfied.
"Director Ji, please answer our questions. Does this hostage case correlate with the alleged illegal drug sales in the northern district, and was Han Fei's death a result of being ousted due to an unfair share?"
"Journalist, watch your language." Ji Weihua saw it was the same male journalist and couldn't help raising an eyebrow.
"I apologize, Director Ji, for my language, but we are questioning the cause of the police chief's death. Additionally, with Dragon Soul's involvement, may this case also link to international criminal acts? And was the sudden appearance of the assassin group merely coincidental?"
"I don't know where you get these rumors about illegal drug trading, but I assure you, our North District has always pursued fair practice and never committed acts that harm citizens or national interests. As for the appearance of the assassin group, it was purely individual action. Employing such bodyguards results in corresponding deeds, over which we have no control, right?" Ji Weihua's tone cooled significantly, Xu Ming, standing in the corner, grasped each conversation detail seamlessly.
"Lao Xu, why do I feel these journalists are well-prepared!" Shi Shuai squeezed through, the confrontation between the stage and the audience akin to war smoke rising, a bloodless battle occurring in the conference hall. "These people are incredibly bold. Aren't they afraid District Chief Yao could have their heads with just a word?" (To be continued.
