Special Forces Medic-Chapter 815 - 688: Entering the Interior
The tall chimney at the brick factory was still emitting thick black smoke, which gave off a pungent smell from a distance. Wang Xi, who was born in the south, felt extremely uncomfortable with this choking odor. He parked his motorcycle on the side and disappeared into the bushes.
Perhaps due to the spacious area, green vegetation was planted around the brick factory for windbreak and air purification. After changing several positions, Wang Xi squatted on the right side of the main entrance, where the view was open, allowing him to see the inside quite clearly.
The layout of the brick factory was simple: the plant area, warehouse, and dormitory—three iconic buildings. In the middle was an open space with two trucks parked, but Ji Weihua's black Mazda was not among them.
Could it be that he didn't come here? Wang Xi pondered silently. There were no forks in the road from the old lady's house all the way here. There was a small path at the gas station, but it was a bit tight for a car to drive through. On the way, Wang Xi deliberately took note of the surroundings of the road.
The brick factory wasn't at the end of the road. There might be other buildings further down, but Wang Xi's instinct told him that this was likely the direction Ji Weihua was headed. Where would such a big car be parked?
As he thought, he had already walked out. He stood at the entrance of the brick factory, like a gatekeeper blocking the way, his strange behavior catching the attention of the security guard.
"What are you sneaking around here for?" A loud shout startled Wang Xi, causing him to fall to the ground, nervously eyeing the two fierce-looking middle-aged men in front of him.
"I... I'm here to find... find a job!" Wang Xi clambered up, patting the dust off his rear. The road was covered with thick lime powder and some scattered stones, making his feet feel like they were on a sandy beach, full of grit.
"Looking for a job?" The guard on the left, a slightly younger-looking man, sized Wang Xi up, his eyes intentionally widened. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
"Yes, yes." In a neither southern nor northern accent, Wang Xi bowed to show his humility.
"Do you know anyone here?" The left guard glanced towards his colleague, his fierce demeanor seemingly intensifying the suspicion.
"Uh... no, I just saw the job notice outside and came over."
"Did you bring your ID?" A man, looking to be in his forties, came up briskly, pushing the previous man aside.
"Yes, yes!" Wang Xi replied with a simple smile. Damn it, even the gatekeepers are so fierce; who knows what it's like inside.
"Take him to the overseer; with a build like that, he won't last a few days before running off." The middle-aged man dismissed Wang Xi's appearance, having seen many youngsters lacking perseverance.
"Lao Li, isn't this a bit much?" The man pushed to the back pouted. "This kid looks shady. Might he be here to scope the place or a reporter trying to dig up a story?"
"You've watched too many TV dramas." The middle-aged man, apparently their leader, retorted sharply. "Even if he had the guts, he wouldn't dare. Enough talk, just take him over; the factory is really short-handed."
"Alright, follow me in." The fierce-looking man spared no words with the middle-aged man and walked into the factory, with Wang Xi, empty-handed, following behind.
Entering the brick factory, Wang Xi found that the place was much larger than it appeared from the outside. Besides the three iconic buildings, there were several two-story temporary structures. Following the man up the stairs, the sound of metal clanging resounded.
Wang Xi roughly observed the layout of the building. In front of it were the chimneys and plant, and to the right were the dormitory, canteen, and rest area. As he climbed the stairs, he noticed at the back of the building a separate low flat house, rarely visited, fenced off, with the black Mazda parked by the fence. He attempted a closer look but was loudly interrupted, forcing him to move forward hurriedly.
Could Yan Juanjuan really be hidden here? Why would Ji Weihua return to the brick factory—could this be another stronghold? As Wang Xi walked, these thoughts crossed his mind, causing him to accidentally bump into a wall of people. "Ah, sorry, sorry," he apologized repeatedly, like a complete bumpkin.
A cold snort sounded in his ears, prompting Wang Xi to look up and lock eyes with Ji Weihua. His fists clenched, he felt so nervous his palms sweated, fearing Ji Weihua would recognize him.
Although they had a brief encounter in Beigong, Wang Xi was digging at the back while Ji Weihua was with the boss in the front. He probably wouldn't have made an impression on a person like him, someone who paid no mind to small fry. Comforting himself, he stepped back under Ji Weihua's cold gaze.
"Get inside, why are you standing at the doorway?" The fierce-looking man shouted at Wang Xi from the innermost room, while Ji Weihua stopped abruptly, turned around, and stared at Wang Xi.
Almost petrified, Wang Xi stood unmoving, shoulders slumped, head bowed low. Ji Weihua approached and stood before him. "New here?"
"Ah!" Wang Xi's back stiffened. He didn't know how to respond to Ji Weihua, feeling his throat tremble.
"Boss Ji!" The man waiting inside, seeing that Wang Xi hadn't entered, prepared to pull him in but unexpectedly encountered Ji Weihua. Bowing respectfully to Ji Weihua, he explained, "He's here looking for a job."
"Have we met before?" Two very vague impressions, a very vague face.
"No, no, never met." Wang Xi timidly shifted closer to the fierce-looking man, like a frightened wife. Ji Weihua said nothing more, thinking perhaps he was being overly suspicious.
Wang Xi sensed someone tugging him and hurriedly followed the man into the innermost office. From the outer entrance to inside, there was a small corridor dividing the rooms. Some doors were tightly shut with no windows to see inside, while others were open, cluttered with some tools and a few tables and chairs—traces of human presence, likely a resting place for some foremen.
"Get in!" Nudged forward, Wang Xi frowned, about to say something when the man spoke. "Assistant Qin, here's another one. See if he's suitable."
The person referred to as Assistant Qin looked up from a pile of documents and inspected Wang Xi. "You can go down and get back to work now—Director Ji just left." (To be continued. If you like this work, feel free to vote at Qidian (qidian.com). Your support is my greatest motivation.)
